for Everyone

This year is the 400th death anniversary of WilliamShakespeare. To mark the occasion, Singapore Philatelic Museum brings you Shaking It With Shakespeare exhibition. Targeted at families with children, the exhibition is designed to be an introductory gateway to Shakespeare and is suitable for those who do not know much about ‘the Bard’.

To bring the exhibition to life, the museum organised exciting and engaging Shakespeare-themed programmes. During Children’s Season 2016, visitors were treated to participatory storytelling and workshops by Shakespeare’s Globe from London. On the first two Sundays of June, families flocked to the museum’s first-ever Tudor fair. There was music from Shakespeare’s time, costume dress-up and make-up booth, pie-making and leather craft demonstrations, DIY pomander craft, palm reading, self-guided activity trail and a mobile library van.

14 may 2016 - maRCH 2017

The exhibition was officially opened by Mr Baey Yam Keng, Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, on 13 May 2016

‘‘ My time at SPM has been an absolute pleasure. It has been a real privilege to share William Shakespeare’s amazing stories with so many young people. The response has been wonderful, and the way the groups have engaged with the stories and characters are very impressive.During some of the storytelling sessions, I got to meet some wonderful children. They were able to think as the characters and reflected on their actions. During Henry V, I asked the kids on their thoughts about Henry declaring war on France. A little girl said that he was ‘stupid’ for doing so because there would ultimately be no winners and all who died would ‘still be fighting in heaven’. And during Macbeth, a boy said he would put ingredients into the potion potent enough to scare!

Dressed up as

Sir Rowland Hill!

Hello Sir Rowland Hill

The Darlingtons at SPM

British gentleman, Mr. David Darlington a friend of Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) visited in April this year with his wife, Jean. This was their second visit to the museum.

The Darlingtons lived in Singapore from 1966 to 1971. David taught in the army school for British children located at Selarang Garrison. David and Jean were newly- weds when they first arrived in Singapore.

When they moved back to England after their posting, David continued his teaching career. Every year in Essex County where they live, the Colne Valley Railway Preservation Society would organise a Victorian Extravaganza where people would dress up in Victorian clothes.

When David brought his pupils to the fair, he dressed up as Sir Rowland Hill, the inventor of the postage stamp. He would bring some Penny Black from his collection and stamps with pictures depicting the life and times of the Victorian era.

After retiring in 1996, the Society asked if David would like to continue to be part of the extravaganza as Sir Rowland Hill. He agreed and has been doing it for 20 years! Jean adds that her husband’s love for stamps come alive when he talks to children about them.

SPM wishes them all the best and looks forward to seeing them again.

Mr Darlington contributed his voice to SPM’s ‘Shaking It With Shakespeare’ Exhibition.

During National Heritage Board’s Children’s Season 2016, Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) invited Jack Murray from Shakespeare’s Globe to conduct workshops and activities. He brought stories such as The Tempest, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night and Henry V alive through participatory storytelling!

It was a fantastic experience to con- duct masterclasses for museum and attraction professionals, teachers, parents, and storytellers. When I saw that SPM had recreated a portion of The Globe in their gallery, it made me feel very at ease, like as though I was there. I enjoyed myself and the company of the new friends I made among the welcoming staff of the museum. SPM feels like a home away from home and I can’t wait to come back!
