The Four Areas of Focus

The Four Areas of Focus express the vision and yearnings of the people of The United Methodist Church. Over this quad-rennium, the church will seek to focus the work of making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world around these areas of ministry:

• Combating the diseases of poverty by improving health globally.

• Engaging in ministry with the poor.

• Creating new places for new people and revitalizing existing congregations.

• Developing principled Christian leaders for the church and the world.

WELCOME SPRIG MARCH 20TH

The marvels of spring, how manifold thy

works. In wisdom how thou has made them all,

the earth is full of the richest. PS;104:24

The earth sought, and was granted a re-

prieve from the grip of winters’ bondage. God ,

the creator of the season has instituted this phe-

nomenal, allowing the warming rays to loosen the

bonds of the arctic stronghold. The earth is full of

riches and beauty. The creatures are satisfied.

Joy in God is never out of season.

Christians experience God thru the events

of history that God has made known to us. This

makes time very important to the Christian faith.

It’s because of this that the cycle of the Christian

year is what grounds our relationship with God,

we look forward to the Lenten season, look for

the colors of purple.

During the Lenten season we are focused

on the ministry of Jesus Christ.

In this issue we would like to introduce im-

portant days leading up to Easter.

• Ash Wednesday, March 9th

• Lent

• The Holy Days

• Calendar of Crucifixion

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of

Lenten season. It is a service of public penance.

Worshipers are called forward to the alter rail,

and the minister applies the ashes with his or her

thumb to form the sign of the cross on the fore-

head of each worshiper. This is a public declara-

tion of the need for repentance.

Lent

The forty days of Lent do not include Sun-

days, since all Sundays are considered to be

small Easters in celebration of Resurrection.

Many people give up something for Lent as a re-

minder of the season. Others take on new spiri-

tual disciplines such as prayers of repentance,

spiritual journaling, and extra service to others.

Holy Week – The Three Great Days

Holy Thursday – Communion is a large part

of a Holy Thursday service.

Good Friday – The term Good Friday comes

from the English church. In Old English, “Good”

meant “Holy,” so the title Good Friday means “Holy

Friday”.

Holy Saturday – Holy Saturday is often

viewed as the last Sabbath for the disciples as Jews. It

is with the resurrection of Jesus that the disciples be-

came Christians celebrating the Resurrection on Sun-

day.

“The Great Three Days from sunset Holy

Thursday to sunset Easter Day are a unity – climax of

the Christian year.”

(The United Methodist Book of Worship)

Jerusalem OBITUARIES 33AD

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ, 33 of Nazareth, died Friday on Mt.

Calvary, also known as Golgotha, the place of the

betrayed by the apostic Judas. Jesus was crucified

by the Romans by order of the Ruler Pontius Pilate.

The causes of death were crucifixion, extreme ex-

haustion, severe torture, and loss of blood.

Jesus Christ, a descendant of Abraham, was a mem-

ber of the house of David. He was the son of the

late Joseph, a carpenter of Nazareth, and Mary His

devoted mother.

Jesus was born in a stable in the city of Bethlehem,

Judea. He is survived by His mother Mary, brothers

and sisters, his faithful Apostles, numerous disci-

ples, and many other followers.

Jesus was self educated and spend most of his adult

life working as a Teacher. Jesus also occasionally

worked a medical doctor and it is reported that he

healed many patients. Up until the time of his death

Jesus was teaching and sharing the good news, heal-

ing the sick, touching the lonely, feeding the hun-

gry, and helping the poor.

Jesus was most noted for telling parables about His

Father’s Kingdom and performing miracles, such as

feeding over 5,000 people with only five loaves of

bread and two fish, and healing a man who was born

blind. On the day of His death, He held a Last Sup-

per celebrating the Passover Feast at which he fore-

told His death.

The body was quickly buried in a stone grave,

which was donated by Joseph of Arimathea, a loyal

friend of the family. By the order of Pontius Pilate,

a boulder was rolled in front of the tomb. Roman

soldiers were put on guard.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that

everyone try to live as Jesus did. Donations may be

sent to anyone in need.

REFLECTION OF BLACK HISTORYREFLECTION OF BLACK HISTORYREFLECTION OF BLACK HISTORYREFLECTION OF BLACK HISTORY

God has miraculously used imperfect people to give the world one perfect book#.the Bible! This year for Black History we would like to share with you the testimonies of our ancestors on why the

Bible is so important!

Seven Benefits from Reading Your Bible

Bible reading is more that a pleasant pastime. It can

become a daily habit that will change your life.

God’s Word holds out the promise of rich benefits for

those who spend time reading it and taking its truths to

heart. Here are just seven of the many ways your life

can be better as you make the Bible your daily reading

companion. All seven come from Psalm 119—a mag-

nificent song of praise for God’s Word.

1. The Bible will help keep you from sin. “I have hidden

your word in my heart, that I might not sin against

you”(verse 11).

2. The Bible will lift your burdens.” I weep with grief;

encourage me by your word”(verse 28).

3. The Bible will guide your steps. “your word is a lamp

for my feet and a light for my path” (verse105)

4. The Bible will bring you joy. “Your decrees are my

treasure: they are truly my heart’s de-

light” (verse111).

5. The Bible will lead to wisdom ”as your words are

taught, they give light; even the simple can under-

stand them,”(verse 130).

6. The Bible will give you peace. “Those who love your

law have great peace and do not stumble” (verse

165)

7. The Bible will bring you back to God. “I have wan-

dered away like a lost sheep; come and find me, for I

have not forgotten your command.” (verse 176).

Prayer for Unity of the Church

Oh God the father of our lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously

to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred and prejudice,

and whatever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that, as there is but one Body one Spirit,

one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God , and Father of us all, so we may all

be one heart and in one soul, unity in one holy bond of truth and faith, and charity, and may with one

mind one mouth glorify thee; through Jesus Christ our lord. Amen.
