UNDERGRADUATE GIFTED AND TALENTED AT DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY BY MR RHODES During the Easter break I was fortunate enough to visit De Montfort University to see some of our students perform in a show. Charlie Lilley, Ellie Hemmings and Dec Moran were selected, from over 90 applicants across Rutland and Leicestershire, to take part in a Gifted and Talented Undergraduate course at the University. All three had to write a lengthy application describing their Drama experience, their skills and ultimately their passion for creating and performing Drama in order to gain their place on the course. This opportunity gave students the chance to experience Drama in a Higher Education environment which they found inspiring and exciting. The course ran for 4 days and was very intense, starting early in the morning and finishing in the evening. The idea behind the course was to introduce students to Drama at university level and to motivate them to want to study Drama at a higher level. When I visited the university during the week there was a real excitement amongst the students about what they had done and achieved. It was fantastic not only to see the students’ work, which demonstrated skill and talent, but also to receive such positive feedback from the professionals about our students in particular. BALLET CENTRAL At the end of April we welcomed Ballet Central to UCC as they delivered a workshop to some of our aspiring ballerinas. The workshop was a mix of classic warm up techniques, creative work and performance all inspired by the company’s latest tour piece. The students involved were able to experience working with a professional touring company who shared with them secrets and tips about preparing and devising ballet performance. The students involved responded so well to the opportunity and immersed themselves fully in what was asked of them. “It was really good fun because it was something different and interesting. I liked the way the company used pictures to inspire us when creating our work” May Brittenden – Year 8 Following the workshop, we received news that 4 of our students had been invited to take part in a two day residency with the company as they prepared for a performance at Corby Cube. Well done to May Brittenden, Nieves Garratt, Fay Wilkins and Angela Wilson who won places on the residency. It was a fantastic achievement by the four girls; a real measure of their talent. YEAR 10 PHYSICAL THEATRE On Tuesday 29th May, Year 10 GCSE drama students had their performance evening for the second part of their GCSE coursework. This time the students were performing ensemble pieces based around the idea of ‘The Celebrity World’, which they spent time devising in a Physical Theatre Style. To help them with preparation, the students recently took part in a workshop delivered by Frantic Assembly. This experience was so inspiring and engaging that the students have used many of the ideas to develop and create their work. The workshop was intense and focused, but the work achieved by the students was of an incredibly high standard, so well done to everyone that took part in such a professional and conscientious way. PrinCethorPe-Kingsley two day event by Ms stewart

Three Year 11 girls, Emily Lloyd, Grace Millbank and Becci Williams went to Leamington Spa on the 26th and 27th May to take part in a National Inter-Schools two day event (like Burleigh and Badminton Horse Trials, but over two days). It was a very testing combination of disciplines over the two days, starting with dressage and show jumping on Saturday, at the end of which, Becci Williams was in first place with the lowest dressage score and no faults in the show jumping. Grace and Emily also had good dressage scores, but Emily took four faults in the show jumping. Grace stayed clear.

In the intense heat of Sunday the girls started with timed riding on roads and tracks (3km in 15mins), then straight onto a timed steeplechase course of 0.75km in 1min 30secs, then straight on to a longer timed track (4km in 27 mins) and finishing with a very tiring and difficult ride across country of 2.75km in an optimum time of 5 mins 50 secs. The horses had to be very fit – and so did the rider! The girls have all been in training for some time, and fitting it around exam revision. Having all finished the four phases, and been passed fit by the vet, we then spent some very tense hours cooling down and waiting for everyone to finish so we could get a result. Right up until 30 minutes before the end it looked as though Becci would win, but when the final results came in she had been beaten into second place by 4 time penalties. The fact that the eventual winner was a Junior European Silver Medallist was some compensation - this was, after all, our first ever 2 day event, so an amazing result in that context! Grace achieved a few time penalties which dropped her to 9th position.

All girls rode brilliantly and certainly didn’t appear to be novices out for the first time! As this is their last event riding for the school it was a very fitting finale and they deserve huge congratulations for the efforts they have made over their time at UCC.

On March 21st we were lucky enough to have a visit from ex-student and Executive Chef at the Marquess of Exeter in Lyddington, Brian Baker. Brian had kindly offered to run a workshop for some of our most talented potential chefs and Design and Technology students in Year 10 and 11.

Brian spoke a little about his career path since leaving UCC way back when, then proceeded in setting a ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ style challenge for the students using chicken, and a range of ingredients including goat’s cheese and chorizo. The teams had to devise an inspiring dish from the ingredients then prepare it.

Meanwhile, Brian demonstrated how to ‘prep’ some common vegetables in a professional style, moving swiftly on to showing the teams how to make a double cooked cheese soufflé.

Whilst these were in the oven, it was back to the challenge, followed by another demonstration – this time the extremely popular chocolate soufflé.

All the students had a great time and had a real insight into the world of professional catering. They all said how much fun they had as well as learning a lot. They have requested more sessions like this. The winners of the Ready, Steady, Cook Challenge were Kate Grunwald, Ed Bell and paige Bottomley with a dish of potato, cheese and onion rosti topped with herbed chicken breast and a watercress salad. They were the proud recipients of a complimentary meal at the Marquess of Exeter!!

April 25th saw the return of the Cookie Club with Professor Chris Binns from Leicester University, presenting a lecture on the subject of Nanotechnology to a collection of Year 10 and 11 students.

Nanotechnology means controlling devices or materials at an atomic or molecular scale, literally between 1 and 100 nanometres in size. Professor Binns is currently engaged with some pioneering work to develop thin film solar technology that could be used to harness solar energy on a massive scale. The film could be coated onto windows or buildings with much lower impact than the existing technology.

In an engaging l e c t u r e , P r o f e s s o r Binns started by discussing the size of the nanoparticle in the nano world, then went on to discuss the 3 main areas of

research in this area. He mentioned how the properties of materials change in the nano world, for example iron becomes a very strong permanent magnet as a nano particle, which could have all manner of uses.

He closed by outlining some of the potential problems of unleashing nano particles into the world, one of them being the ‘Grey Goo’ theory!

On May 9th The Cookie Club had a visit from Professor Martin Barstow (Pro-Vice Chancellor, Head of the College of Science and Engineering, Professor of Astrophysics and Space Science at the University of Leicester.) who gave 2 animated lectures.

The first was on the subject of ‘The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life, and likelihood of us making contact with technological civilisations elsewhere in the galaxy’. Apparently, it can be predicted by using the Drake Equation:

Number of Civilisations = R x fs x fp x ne x fl x fi x fc x L

We worked it out for our Galaxy and it came to 400, but unfortunately because these civilisations are likely to be 3000 light years or so away, we are unlikely to be able to communicate with them because it would take so long to send and receive a message.

The students, from Years 7 through to Year 10, asked many questions, as you might expect, and Professor Barstow commented on the high level exhibited by the students’ thinking.

In his second lecture Professor Barstow gave a first-hand account of his work building and launching ‘Sounding Rockets’ in the Nevada desert. It gave us a real insight into the frustration, passion and tenacity needed to pursue a career in rocket launching.

To celebrate the bard’s birthday, Year 9 took part in a competition where they were challenged to create an artistic representation of a chosen scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and produce a variety of display work. The competition was fierce (not least amongst the English teachers!) and the Year 9s produced some excellent work that has really livened up the boards outside our English rooms. Our thanks to Mrs Turner for judging the boards.
