Spring is in the air, and all things living have renewed

vibrance and colour. At UET we are in the middle of

Spring Semester, and all programs are progressing

smoothly. The scholars we sent abroad for higher

studies are trickling back. We now have a robust

number of around 110 Ph.D faculty members that is

changing the academic landscape of UET.

Center for Advanced Studies in Energy (CAS-EP), a

USAID funded project, is up and running. We are

shooting for commencement of academic programs in

May 2015. A custom-built building for CAS-EP at

Hayatabad, costing approximately Rs.50 million, is ready for ground breaking and

construction.

UET was asked by the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to prepare a feasibility

study and PC-1 for a Technology University (TU). Both these documents were approved

and TU is now taking physical shape. The government has been kind enough to honour

your’s truly to be the Project Director and develop TU on a fast track. Work is well in

hand, and with God’s grace, we intend starting academic programs in Fall-2015 in

leased premises at Nowshera.

All this has been possible for the goodwill UET has earned because of a dedicated

faculty, an excellent student body and accomplished non-academic staff. And this was

possible for the tremendous support we continually receive from the Planning

Commission of Pakistan, HEC and the provincial government. Finally, it is the guidance

ing teams.

The faculty and students of participating institutions also carried out the Space Walk on Campus, the aim of which

was to create public awareness of space technology and synchronizing it with WSW celebrations.

The Earthquake Engineering Center (EEC) performed the

first ever test conducted in Pakistan on a full scale con-

fined hollow concrete block masonry building. The main

objective was to determine its seismic capacity and risk

assessment since confined masonry buildings performed

very well in the October 8, 2005 Kashmir Earthquake.

The test was performed by Engr. Abdul Sadiq MSc Student

of Dr. Khan Shahzada Associate Professor, Department of

Civil Engineering in the research project titled “Seismic

Capacity Assessment of Confined Hollow Concrete Block

Masonry Buildings” in partial support of Pak-Dream Pri-

vate Limited, Hattar Industrial Estates Haripur. After Octo-

ber 8, 2005 Kashmir earthquake the use of confined hol-

low concrete block masonry buildings has been increased

drastically and its seismic capacity assessment has to be

determined experimentally on scientific basis is critical.

Dr. Khan Shahzada, Principal Investigator said, the testing

on a full scale confined hollow concrete block masonry

building was performed for the first time in Pakistan. The

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) arranged a tremendous event “Quiz competi-

tion”. Ali Khan Turangzai and supervision of Advisor Dr. Alam Zaib Khan organized the event.

There were forty teams from different institutions which took part in the quiz competition in

round number one: written test (MCQs based). While results of Round 1 were decided in a fun ori-

ented round i.e. Chocolate Round, a unique feature which actively engaged the participating

teams. For each correct answer, a chocolate was the reward. After quarter and semi-finals, two

teams contested in the final round;“FLAMES “from College of Home Economics and “SHAHEENS “from the Fazia Inter

College. The team “SHAHEENS”, from the Fazia Inter College secured first position. (Repporteur: Rifa Saleem. Publica-
