Dear School Community
The school term continues to fly past, with all classes very
settled and engaged in their learning. It is really fantastic
being able to visit rooms and see so much high quality
learning taking place, and it has also been very pleasing to
see our Grade 6 students start the year by being such good
role models for younger grades.
As we consider two-way communication between school
and home to be very important to each child’s education,
our teachers also try to ensure that parents and carers can
see what is happening in classrooms across the school,
including through the use of the Seesaw app. At the same
time, the most important role of our teachers is planning,
teaching and assessment for each child and the amount of time they spend sharing information through Seesaw or in
other ways needs to be balanced against this. If you ever
feel that communication via Seesaw, the newsletter or
Facebook does not provide you with sufficient information
about your child or what is happening at school, please
don’t hesitate to contact one of us or your child’s teacher.
Please also remember that parent-teacher conversations
are taking place in the week commencing 23 March, and we
would encourage all parents and carers to attend. Parent-
teacher conversations are a valuable opportunity to find out
more about your child’s progress, raise any concerns you
have, and discuss specific areas for your child to focus on
over coming months. You will also receive a brief written
progress report at the meeting that will provide information
on your child’s work habits and social skills over the first 8
weeks of the year. Online bookings close at 5pm on
Monday, 16 March and you can follow the instructions in
this newsletter if you have not yet booked in.
There have been a number of events and activities over the
last two weeks that provide students with opportunities
beyond the classroom. On Tuesday, 3 March selected Grade
3-6 students represented our school at a catch up event for
the Huon and Channel Athletics Carnival that was washed
out last November. The behaviour of students was excellent,
and Mr Iles will advise students as soon as possible if they
have been selected for the State Athletics Carnival. From
Monday next week we will be hosting Firefighter Todd, who
will be working with all of our Prep-Grade 6 classes to
develop their understanding of fire safety and what to do in
an emergency. This is a good opportunity for families to also
talk about what to do if there was ever a fire at home, as
well as discuss general safety around stoves, BBQs and other
potential hazards.
We also have movie night coming up on Friday, 20 March
and if you are able to help our School Association and
school staff in running this event please get in contact with
the School Association at [email protected]. It
would be great to see some new faces help out those
parents, carers and teachers who regularly give up some
time to make these types of events a success.
Finally, the Annual General Meeting of the Illawarra Primary
School Association is being held at 7pm on Wednesday, 25
March in the main administration building. Our Association
works hard to run a large number of events and over the
years it has raised substantial funds to make purchases that
greatly enhance our school environment, including the flying
fox and the audio-visual system in our GP room. The
Association also works with the principal to develop and
approve school policies. As some of our long term office
bearers and committee members will be stepping down after
giving wonderful service to our school community, please
consider supporting the Association by getting involved and
nominating for one on the positions that will be voted on at
the AGM (full details in this newsletter). If you are not sure
and would like further information, please email the
Association at [email protected]. In the next
newsletter we will update the school community on who are
the newly elected executive members of the Association and
we will also acknowledge and thank those members who
have completed terms, having given their time and efforts to
make our school an even better place for the students.

NAPLAN ONLINE 2020
The National Assessment Program-Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) was first undertaken as an online
test in Tasmania during 2019. Tasmanian schools will again
participate in NAPLAN Online in 2020.
NAPLAN Online provides better assessment and more
precise results. The assessments feature a tailored test
design where the questions a student receives will depend
on their answers to previous questions.
NAPLAN testing will be held from the 12 to 22 May 2020
with online testing available for each of the NAPLAN year
levels (3, 5, 7 and 9.)
NAPLAN Online 2020 will include four components,
Writing, Numeracy, Conventions of Language and Reading.
Please note that all Year Three students will be completing
a paper based Writing Test.
Schools will receive reports and results for
participants following the completion of NAPLAN Online
2019. These Individual Student Reports will have the same
format as in previous years. This format is used for every
student in Australia.
A parent/carer brochure containing more information
about the NAPLAN Online assessments, is being sent
home today to families of students sitting NAPLAN 2020.
If you have further questions, please contact
[email protected] at the school.
PARENT SKILLS SURVEY
Are you comfortable sharing your knowledge and skills
with our students in the comfort of a classroom setting?
Then we may have the perfect opportunity for you to
support our students with their learning and the classroom
teachers with their planning. Throughout the year,
teachers will often seek out guest speakers to support
their current unit of inquiry learning, an exercise that can
at times be quite costly and difficult to coordinate. If you
have a few minutes to fill out our online survey and would
be willing to share your expertise with our students we
would love to hear from you. Click on the following link to
access our survey. Thanks to those parents who have
already accessed this survey and registered their interest.

INTRODUCING THE SCHOOL FAIR IN 2020
We have been fortunate to secure the voluntary
services of the amazing Amy Groves-Bosworth from
House of A Event Management to be our Fair
Co-ordinator for 2020!!! Amy has shared with us that she is a fair
fanatic, so we are very excited to begin planning and organising for
this event.
VOLUNTEERS
We will need an abundance of volunteers, so if you would like to
be involved in ANY aspects of the fair, please email Amy at
FISHY BUSINESS IN PREP/1 W/B
Prep/1 Williams/Baker were very excited to
discover that they had a class pond. After
inquiring into how they could look after the
pond area, they discovered that the pond
contained goldfish! “How can you tell if they are
girls or boys?” asked Michael. “We can’t name
them without knowing” said Emily. This started
our investigation into how we could find out.
The class came up with lots of ideas, one of
them being “ask someone who knows” so that is
exactly what we did. Luckily Max’s Mum,
Meghan, is a fish expert and has had a book
published on the genders of Carp (a fish similar
to a gold fish). She came in to talk to the class
about how to identify the genders of different
fish species. Meghan told us about one species,
the Blue Headed Wrasse, who can change from
a girl to a boy. This generated a few more
questions like: “How do fish change from girls to
boys?” and “How did the first fish get created if
there were no boys or girls?” We took Meghan
out to look at our fish and her expert eye
identified we have 4 fish – one girl and 3 boys.
Now to come up with names for our fish and to
research what fish need to survive.

GRADE 3-6 SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Two weeks ago, Illawarra Primary students
participated in the first ever House-based Swimming
Carnival. The carnival was held at the Clarence Pool
and all Grade 3-6 students participated in a range of
different events.
In the carnival there were a number of novelty
events and common stroke races including breast-
stroke, backstroke and freestyle. Points were not
only awarded for placement in these races but were
also given for participation. It was great to see how
many students participated in races!
We would like to thank all the parents, students,
teachers and Kingston High volunteers that helped
out and made the day such a success. At the end of
the day the final house points were:
Bombora -843
Waratah-758
Wattle-691
We would like to wish all the students that made the
Huon and Channel team good luck next week!

Tasmania feel about their own wellbeing, students in
Grades 4-6 at Illawarra Primary will be taking part in
a wellbeing survey.
The Student Wellbeing Survey is part of the
Department of Education’s Child and Student Wellbeing
Strategy.
The details for the survey are:
When: Friday 27th of March
Who: Grades 4-6
What do I need to do: You and your child don’t
need to do anything. The survey will be done in class
time and will not require your child to prepare in any
way.
A letter with more information has been sent home
with all Year 4-6 students, including Frequently Asked
Questions and a form to sign and return to the
school if you do not want your child to
