Winthrop University is hosting professional development for first and second grade teachers focused on African American history and inquiry unit design in accordance with the 2020 SC Social Studies College- and Career-Ready Standards. We are seeking twelve teachers (6 first grade and 6 second grade) to design units on famous African American historical figures. First grade units will focus on: Septima Clark and Ronald McNair. Second grade units will focus on: Ruby Bridges and the scientists highlighted in the film Hidden Figures (Dorothy Johnson Vaughan, Mary Winston Jackson, Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson, and Dr. Christine Mann Darden). Applicants should be available to attend three full-day (9:00am-3:30pm) workshops held at Winthrop University: March 12th, March 13th, and April 24th. Lunch will be provided, and substitute pay will be covered. All participating teachers will receive the instructional materials that accompany all four inquiry units developed as a result of project.
