On Wednesday 20th March, we held our annual House Athletic Carnival, at the Melton Athletics track. While the skies were grey for much of the morning, spirits certainly weren’t dampened, and the Year 12 costumes as brilliant as ever. Sports Leader John Hayward commented: ‘The day got off to a wet start with some doubts over some of the sprint events on the track. We started the day 30 minutes behind due to the conditions, but the incredibly efficient work from the students and staff saw us finish slightly ahead of schedule. Attendance and participation increased again this year and the scores of the Age Group Champions were all quite high. The competition between houses was intense, with the top four houses spread over 69 points with Wurundjeri - 696, MacDonald – 654, Bishop – 641 and Bennett – 627. The Principal’s Gift was a highlight of the day with the sidelines of the track packed with spectators eagerly watching the quickest in the 100m sprints fight for line honours in the handicap event. ‘Phone-Free GSC’?

What do you think about mobile phones at school? I’ve visited several secondary colleges recently who ask students to put phones in lockers and leave them there until 3.15pm. The classrooms and yard seemed more settled. No issues with illicit filming or the distraction of email, social media or YouTube. I’d like to trial a ‘Phone-free GSC’ in Term 2. I will speak to the SRC about it. What do parents and carers think? Email me with your views. [email protected].

MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Ash Griffin here, I am very excited to be teaching electric guitar and bass

at Gisborne Secondary College. I have recently completed my Bachelor

of Music at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music majoring in Jazz

Performance. Currently I am performing at the Adelaide Fringe Festival

in a show called Jackson VS Jackson which features the music of Michael

and Janet Jackson. Lessons will begin on the 19th March and I look

forward to working with those students who have chosen this subject.

From the Assistant Principal Sarah Rose

International Women’s Day at Gisborne Secondary College was celebrated in the Stadium with a range of fun and educational activities organised and supervised by our amazing SRC. Lots of students came along, as did our local member Mary-Anne Thomas. Huge thanks to Laura Crozier for being the brains behind the operation.

I have started to teach a Year 10 4SP class; the opportunity to get to know students in this context has been great, and given me an opportunity to see the wonderful things GSC students are capable of. I’ve also observed kind, respectful behaviour while out and about around the school yard and corridors– from student’s looking out for each other, to handing in lost property; it’s so wonderful to see such level of kindness and respect within the school community.

MATHS

‘Pi’ is a non-repeating, infinite decimal, that is equal to the circumference of a circle divided by it’s diameter, it approximate to 3.14 and has applications in Maths and Physics predominantly. To celebrate ‘Pi Day’ the 3rd Month and 14th day (3.14), the Maths department held a Pi for Pie reciting challenge to see who could recite to the greatest number of decimal places, scoring party pies the more places they got to. We had a great attendance for the lunchtime activity and were blown away with our winner’s, Kiana McDuff, effort of 100 decimal places. DANCE CAPTAIN

When I first came to this school, I was a very shy kid. I think we all were. I

never talked to anyone else or did things through the school other than my

assigned work. It stayed like this for a long time. I had no idea what a

captain did and at first, I didn’t want to have anything to do with the role

as I was too scared to have to talk in front of so many people. I was only

introduced to the dance captain once in year 7. I never knew there was

such a thing. Yet here I am, years later, taking the role of the dance captain

and doing so much in the role.

As the years went by things started to change. I slowly started to become

the person I am today as I branched out and found new friends and even

became more confident in myself and my abilities. Year 11 was a big jump

for me and my proudest. The small cast of the Chicago production all

bonded and became a close family. Due to previous years having so many

people in the cast this wasn’t possible. I had gained so many great friends

not only in my own year level but throughout the others. My abilities also

expanded with choreographing and teaching a few small things in the

show.

I’ve always had a passion for dance and did VCE Dance early. This year I’ve taken on the role of dance captain

which I’m excited to be taking the dance curriculum to the next level. Giving the younger years who love the arts

an opportunity to get as much dance experience as they can. With the introduction of dance club, where the

people who join get to do a few performances throughout the year. Teaching the younger year levels brings me

great joy as I can show other kids what I most love about this role, the stage. I’ve also been honoured with the

opportunity to teach the VCE Dance class, their group dance that they’ll be marked on for the year. As for

production, doing Beauty and the Beast has been one of my dreams and being allowed to choreograph a lot of the

big numbers is something that could have never imagined myself doing.

Year 12 for me is both exciting and scary. I knew that I would eventually get there but never really knew what it

meant. Now, being one of the many captains I have an opportunity to expand the school’s greatness and doing the

best I can for the dance community with in the school.

The Years 7-9 Dungeons and Dragons club has been run-ning Monday’s at Lunchtime. This is a student led initia-tive and we will be running two separate campaigns. So far the students have been busy setting up their charac-ter sheets and learning a little bit about the game. The first campaign is expected to start next week with two if our Year 7 students as Dungeon Masters.

SKI AND SNOWBOARD CAMP 2019

A couple of weeks ago we released information to all year 10 students about this year’s camp and asked for

expression of interest forms to be returned to the money window. Thank you to the 30 students who have already

done so.

This extra-curricular camp is mainly for Year 10 students, and is setup to cater for total beginners although we can

accommodate more advanced skiers and boarders. In order to give as many students as possible this

opportunity, if we cannot fill the camp with year 10 students, we have in the past invited a few yr 11’s to join the

camp so that we can maintain the required ratio of 1 adult to 8 students, which also keeps costs down.

This is a fabulous camp and we always have students wishing to return the following year.

The camp will run from 12th to 16th August this year, which is week 5 of term 3.

We deliberately release information early as we recognise that the cost of the camp is relatively high, and this

allows families to budget for the camp, it also means that families who choose, may enter into a payment plan to

make attendance at the camp for their child more achievable.

Expression of interest forms may be obtained from the front office or from myself or Mr Woodlock.

If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact myself of Mr Woodlock by email at [email protected] or [email protected]

Mr McRae Ski camp leader.

The Chaplaincy Committee meets regularly to support our Chaplain, Barb Davis, in her valuable work providing

pastoral care for students, staff, parents and families in the school community.

New members are always welcome. Year 7 parents are encouraged to join. This is a great way to be involved in

the school that your child attends as well as meet other parents and members of the local community.

The committee holds various fundraisers during the year and assistance at any event is always appreciated. This

can be as simple as: helping at one of our sausage sizzles, helping out at our Deb Dress Expo or helping to cater

for our movie night.

If you would like to join us for any event, please phone Helen Doherty on 0407 686 708 or simply turn up to our

next meeting.

period of time away from school, an ‘Extended Absence Leave Form’ should be collected from the front office

prior to your child’s absence. This form will need to be completed by parents/carers and then taken to your

students from school, both during and after normal school hours. IMPORTANT: Students can ONLY be collected by

their parent or by a person who has been authorised by the parents to pick up their child. Please note: Photo ID is

required to collect a student from school. If you have pre-arranged a time to meet your child at the General Office,

please ensure that you have given them a note to show their class teacher so they can be released from class.

If you are collecting your child because they are unwell, please ensure they have reported to the First Aid

Attendant. ALL students must report to the First Aid Attendant if they are unwell before they can be signed out at

the General Office.
