On Wednesday 20th March, we held our annual House Athletic Carnival, at the Melton Athletics track. While the skies were grey for much of the morning, spirits certainly weren’t dampened, and the Year 12 costumes as brilliant as ever. Sports Leader John Hayward commented: ‘The day got off to a wet start with some doubts over some of the sprint events on the track. We started the day 30 minutes behind due to the conditions, but the incredibly efficient work from the students and staff saw us finish slightly ahead of schedule. Unfortunately, High Jump needed to be cancelled due to the weather conditions and arrangements will be made to finish that event back at school. Attendance and participation increased again this year and the scores of the Age Group Champions were all quite high. The competition between houses was intense, with the top four houses spread over 69 points with Wurundjeri - 696, MacDonald – 654, Bishop – 641 and Bennett – 627. The Principal’s Gift was a highlight of the day with the sidelines of the track packed with spectators eagerly watching the quickest in the 100m sprints fight for line honours in the handicap event. Congratulations to Abby G from MacDonald and Harrison J from Barcham in their closely fought victories in the Principal’s gift. The Age Group Champions will be announced, and medallions presented at the next General Assembly.’
Western Region Swimming
On Thursday 4th April, a team of thirteen swimmers will compete in the Western Metropolitan Swimming at Kardinia. This includes individual events (including Jackson J making four appearances in the pool), a Medley Relay team and two Freestyle Relay teams.
Attendance
Assistant Principal Russell Wigginton has been accessing and analysing the attendance data for the whole school with a view to improving pupils’ engagement in classes. It is fantastic to report that there is a significant number of learners at the college who still have a 100% attendance rate for all subjects. Having led the reintroduction of the text message service to inform parents of student absence, he is developing a reward process to recognise good attendance, which will be implemented across the college in Term 2. Russell is also leading the introduction of an aspirational mentor program with guest speakers aimed at developing long term goals with targeted groups of
students across different year levels.

‘Phone-Free GSC’?
What do you think about mobile phones at school? I’ve visited several secondary colleges recently who ask students to put phones in lockers and leave them there until 3.15pm. The classrooms and yard seemed more settled. No issues with illicit filming or the distraction of email, social media or YouTube. I’d like to trial a ‘Phone-free GSC’ in Term 2. I will speak to the SRC about it. What do parents and carers think? Email me with your views. [email protected].
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Ash Griffin here, I am very excited to be teaching electric guitar and bass
at Gisborne Secondary College. I have recently completed my Bachelor
of Music at the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music majoring in Jazz
Performance. Currently I am performing at the Adelaide Fringe Festival
in a show called Jackson VS Jackson which features the music of Michael
and Janet Jackson. Lessons will begin on the 19th March and I look
forward to working with those students who have chosen this subject.

International Women’s Day at Gisborne Secondary College was celebrated in the Stadium with a range of fun and educational activities organised and supervised by our amazing SRC. Lots of students came along, as did our local member Mary-Anne Thomas. Huge thanks to Laura Crozier for being the brains behind the operation.
I have started to teach a Year 10 4SP class; the opportunity to get to know students in this context has been great, and given me an opportunity to see the wonderful things GSC students are capable of. I’ve also observed kind, respectful behaviour while out and about around the school yard and corridors– from student’s looking out for each other, to handing in lost property; it’s so wonderful to see such level of kindness and respect within the school community.
MATHS
‘Pi’ is a non-repeating, infinite decimal, that is equal to the circumference of a circle divided by it’s diameter, it approximate to 3.14 and has applications in Maths and Physics predominantly. To celebrate ‘Pi Day’ the 3rd Month and 14th day (3.14), the Maths department held a Pi for Pie reciting challenge to see who could recite to the greatest number of decimal places, scoring party pies the more places they got to. We had a great attendance for the lunchtime activity and were blown away with our winner’s, Kiana McDuff, effort of 100 decimal places. DANCE CAPTAIN
When I first came to this school, I was a very shy kid. I think we all were. I
never talked to anyone else or did things through the school other than my
assigned work. It stayed like this for a long time. I had no idea what a
captain did and at first, I didn’t want to have anything to do with the role
as I was too scared to have to talk in front of so many people. I was only
introduced to the dance captain once in year 7. I never knew there was
such a thing. Yet here I am, years later, taking the role of the dance captain
and doing so much in the role.
As the years went by things started to change. I slowly started to become
the person I am today as I branched out and found new friends and even
became more confident in myself and my abilities. Year 11 was a big jump
for me and my proudest. The small cast of the Chicago production all
bonded and became a close family. Due to previous years having so many
people in the cast this wasn’t possible. I had gained so many great friends
not only in my own year level but throughout the others. My abilities also
expanded with choreographing and teaching a few small things in the
show.
I’ve always had a passion for dance and did VCE Dance early. This year I’ve taken on the role of dance captain
which I’m excited to be taking the dance curriculum to the next level. Giving the younger years who love the arts
an opportunity to get as much dance experience as they can. With the introduction of dance club, where the
people who join get to do a few performances throughout the year. Teaching the younger year levels brings me
great joy as I can show other kids what I most love about this role, the stage. I’ve also been honoured with the
opportunity to teach the VCE Dance class, their group dance that they’ll be marked on for the year. As for
production, doing Beauty and the Beast has been one of my dreams and being allowed to choreograph a lot of the
big numbers is something that could have never imagined myself doing.
Year 12 for me is both exciting and scary. I knew that I would eventually get there but never really knew what it
meant. Now, being one of the many captains I have an opportunity to expand the school’s greatness and doing the
best I can for the dance community with in the school.

The Years 7-9 Dungeons and Dragons club has been run-ning Monday’s at Lunchtime. This is a student led initia-tive and we will be running two separate campaigns. So far the students have been busy setting up their charac-ter sheets and learning a little bit about the game. The first campaign is expected to start next week with two if our Year 7 students as Dungeon Masters.

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS CLUB
SKI AND SNOWBOARD CAMP 2019
A couple of weeks ago we released information to all year 10 students about this year’s camp and asked for
expression of interest forms to be returned to the money window. Thank you to the 30 students who have already
done so.
This extra-curricular camp is mainly for Year 10 students, and is setup to cater for total beginners although we can
accommodate more advanced skiers and boarders. In order to give as many students as possible this
opportunity, if we cannot fill the camp with year 10 students, we have in the past invited a few yr 11’s to join the
camp so that we can maintain the required ratio of 1 adult to 8 students, which also keeps costs down.
This is a fabulous camp and we always have students wishing to return the following year.
The camp will run from 12th to 16th August this year, which is week 5 of term 3.
We deliberately release information early as we recognise that the cost of the camp is relatively high, and this
allows families to budget for the camp, it also means that families who choose, may enter into a payment plan to
make attendance at the camp for their child more achievable.

The Chaplaincy Committee meets regularly to support our Chaplain, Barb Davis, in her valuable work providing
pastoral care for students, staff, parents and families in the school community.
New members are always welcome. Year 7 parents are encouraged to join. This is a great way to be involved in
the school that your child attends as well as meet other parents and members of the local community.
The committee holds various fundraisers during the year and assistance at any event is always appreciated. This
can be as simple as: helping at one of our sausage sizzles, helping out at our Deb Dress Expo or helping to cater
for our movie night.

If you are planning a family holiday, your child is competing in a sport at an elite level or requires an extended
period of time away from school, an ‘Extended Absence Leave Form’ should be collected from the front office
prior to your child’s absence. This form will need to be completed by parents/carers and then taken to your
child’s teachers and signed by the year level coordinator. This is our school’s process for extended leave from
school, which allows us to approve and mark the absence accordingly.

2019 funding program opening 1 April
Local groups and organisations with a great idea for a project or activity are encouraged to con-sider applying for financial assistance via Council’s new and improved Community Funding Scheme, opening on Monday 1 April.
The Community Funding Scheme is Council’s annual grants program for not-for-profit community groups and organisations of all sizes, and offers financial assistance of up to $12,000 for a variety of projects and activities.
Applications are invited that align with one of the following funding streams:
Community and cultural development projects
Enhancing the effectiveness of local community groups
Supporting local environmental priorities
Enhancing community places and infrastructure (this stream has been previously known as the Places for People funding program).
The aim of the recent merge of the Places for People funding program into the Community Funding Scheme was to improve consistency, achieve efficiencies in resources and streamline the process for applicants.
Applications for the program open on Monday 1 April and close Tuesday 30 April 2019.

Grant writing workshop
A free grant writing workshop to assist community groups and organisations in preparing their application will be held on Thursday 28 March at 6.30pm at Kyneton Mechanics Institute, 81 Mollison Street, Kyneton.
This workshop will be delivered by external consultants who provide training and resources for the not-for-profit sector, with Council staff available to answer questions.

COMMUNITY NEWS
As part of Gisborne Secondary College’s work to address the issue of student
non-attendance, I urge parents and carers to be mindful of their child’s
attendance and where at all possible, develop routines to
monitor when they are not in school.
Notify the school of your child’s absence
Protecting the safety and well-being of children through the reporting and
monitoring of absenteeism is the responsibility of both parents / careers and
schools. Schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from
6 – 17 years unless an exemption has been granted.
Please remember to call the school absence line on 5428 0899 or log your
child’s absence using our school’s IT platform XUNO early in the morning if
your child is going to be away or late for school so your child’s absence can be
recorded correctly.
Same-day notification of unexplained student absences
From 1st March 2019 Gisborne Secondary College will text message the primary
student contact as soon as practicable on the day if a student is not at school
and you haven’t notified the school as to why. If you are notified by the school
that your child is away without a reason, please contact us as soon as possible
on 5428 0899.

ATTENDANCE
The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) provides payments for eligible students to attend activities like:
school camps swimming, school-organised sport programs ,outdoor education programs excursions and incursions
Applications for 2019 are now open and will close on 28 June 2019

Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply.

If you received CSEF for your student at Gisborne Secondary College in 2018 there is no need to apply.
If your student is new to Gisborne Secondary College an application form will need to be filled out for 2019
(e.g Year 7 student, a new enrolment part way through 2018 or new enrolment 2019).
CSEF
The Department of Education requires schools to have a student collection policy in place for the safe collection of
students from school, both during and after normal school hours. IMPORTANT: Students can ONLY be collected by
their parent or by a person who has been authorised by the parents to pick up their child. Please note: Photo ID is
required to collect a student from school. If you have pre-arranged a time to meet your child at the General Office,
please ensure that you have given them a note to show their class teacher so they can be released from class.
If you are collecting your child because they are unwell, please ensure they have reported to the First Aid
Attendant. ALL students must report to the First Aid Attendant if they are unwell before they can be signed out at
the General Office.
Please note: It is important that the College is aware of every student’s whereabouts at all times and that we have a
record of any illness or injury.

EARLY DEPARTURE FROM SCHOOL
The College prefers that ALL payments and parental permission for Excursions, Camps or Activities be completed
on the smartphone app called Qkr.
Please observe the cut off date for permission and payments as the College will be adhering to this date in 2019.
Payment and permission will not be accepted after the due date listed on the permission form.
