John Code will also be joining us for the first two weeks covering for Thanh Le Rodda on leave. Tracy Lee is on leave for Term 1. trust that everyone’s break was relaxing and refreshing. Katrina and I and the boys spent the holidays working on the house, and got away to Bright for some camping. A huge thank you to staff who worked over the holidays to ensure things were ready to run from day one, especially our facilities crew, our business and administration team and to Stephen for his work completing the timetable. You may notice that our school website has changed. During the holidays it looks like the Russians may have hacked the site and it has all but disappeared. We had the bones of a new version on a much more secure platform drafted, and have been working on getting this into a state that can be used. Over the last three days I have been in and out of classrooms, and talking with students in the yard at lunch time. Everyone seems very excited to be back at school – including our teachers – and many even seem keen for this to be a year of hard work and reaching goals. This is impressive when you hear it from young folk. This is a short, but very busy term so please keep an eye on the XUNO portal for news and events updates, and please stay in touch with your mentor teachers and new year level leaders. I look forward to catching up with families of our college captains at Week 3’s Captain’s Investiture Evening and will see many of you at next week’s Year 7 Information Evening and the VCE Information Evening. Take care of yourselves and your families Andrew

IMPORTANT DATES
Science News January 2017
Welcome to Science News 2017 & our new staff. We are very ex-
cited to introduce to you our new team members: Ms Karissa
Sexton (Physics/Science), Ms Tori Eley (Science/Psychology),
Mrs Tracey Eagle (Chemistry/Science) & Ms Sarah Jackson
(Science). We hope to encourage more stu- dents to participate in
competitions and opportunities provided. There will be another
STEM experience for Year 8 and 9 girls again at Ecolinc.
VCE DIGITAL RESOURCES
I strongly encourage our Year 11 and 12 students studying Chemistry, Biology and Psychology,
to immediately register their textbooks, and access Study On and other resources. Using
these resources on a regular basis will be extremely worthwhile. Effective study on a regular
basis is important. Speak to your teacher for more details.
GARDENING & ASSISTANCE SOUGHT
I have given my word to Mr Robertson, that I would revamp the vegetable garden beds out-
side the food technology area. To do this, I need support. Parent, Lyndon Clarke, has kindly
given me some ideas and suggestions, but I am looking for any parent or friends to work with
me on a regular basis. Please contact me if you are able to spare any amount of time either
working with or without students.
I also need significant amounts of manure. If you have bags of horse manure or manure that
could be collected in a ute or trailer, I would be really interested. Contact me at school.
TEXT BOOKS YEARS 8 - 9
Just a reminder that all science students in Year 8 – 9 are expected to have their own copy of Science Quest 9
in each class, along with an exercise book and their own stationery. Thanks for your support.
HOMEWORK All our year 7 – 10 science students will have a word bank to complete as homework for each topic. Our VCE
students may have word banks, along with other set tasks. We seek your support in helping students reinforce
concepts learnt in class with this work.

FROM THE STAFF
Instrumental Music Program 2017
So much more than just Music Lessons
Gisborne Secondary College gives students a range of musical experiences that focus on student participa-tion in a variety of bands and ensembles and weekly lessons. The program is based in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) which includes the Barcham Theatre, a rehearsal room, three practice rooms, two class-
rooms and a dance studio.
Activities that students can participate in include performances at the end of semester concerts, Presen-
tation Night, and a range of excursions and rehearsal days.
Students can learn a range of instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, cello, double bass, piano, guitar, bass guitar, voice and drums. Some instruments are more popular than
others and the number of students applying may be higher than the places available.
For this reason your student may be placed on the waiting list if not already allocated a place. Alterna-tively students are encouraged to trial their second or third preference instrument. Instrumental teachers will invite the interested students on the waiting list for demonstration lessons as these places are availa-ble and lessons will be offered to the students on a first to pay first allocated to lessons system. Please
do not pay for lessons before you receive a written confirmation of instrument allocation.
New students to the program may have one free demonstration lesson with the instrumental teacher. Af-ter this lesson fees and instrument hire fees must be paid one semester in advance before instruments are allocated and lessons commence. Places in the lessons/ instruments will be held for two weeks from the date of the demonstration lesson before being offered to other students. Alternatively a payment plan can
be organised with the Finance Office.
