Our New Sustainability Partnership with Greenbatch

Greenbatch is a Foundation that is working towards building Western Australia's first plastic recycling facility to prevent hard plastic waste going into landfill and the oceans. Their goal is to end plastic waste pollution. They partner with schools, such as Bannister Creek, to encourage the recycling of PET plastic bottles (water, milk, juice, soft drink etc. bottles).

Greenbatch has provided us with a free wheelie bin to collect used PET bottles. Once our bin is full, they will collect it and reprocess the plastic into 3D printer filament.

You can support our sustainability initiatives by placing your, rinsed, PET bottles in the purple and green wheelie bin located near the school library.

This will be an opportunity for you to hear about, see and have a go at many of the innovative and engaging uses of the iPads in the classrooms. The session will be run by teachers and curriculum leaders with a focus on showing how students use the devices for creation over consumption of content.

Please use the link below to register a place at this session. Our first session earlier in the year filled quickly, so make sure you don’t miss out on this opportunity.

SPLASH OF COLOUR ART PROGRAM

Splash of Colour is a Water Corporation Initiative that was launched in 2017. The program aims to turn small Water Corporation assets such as pump stations and electrical cabinets into works of public art.

Last year, we expressed interest in becoming involved in the program and have just received the exciting news, that due to BCPS being such an active Waterwise school, we have been allocated a project. An Aboriginal artist will work with one of our classes to design artwork which will be painted on pump station boxes installed on Purley Park. Miss Hurae will liaise with the artist and incorporate the design work into her specialist art classes.

This is a great opportunity for our students to be involved in a local community art project that links in with our sustainability and water conservation focus.

The competition is accessible to all students from Years 3 to 6, not just the academically gifted. The competition has an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed to be fun.

Our students are invited to enter the competition, which will be held on Thursday 1st August 2019. Detailed information

and entry forms have been sent home to all students in Years 3 to 6.

If your child would like to participate, please return the completed entry form and fee to the school office.

ROOM 13

As a reward for the Year 3 students in Room 13, who recently completed NAPLAN, we had a game of “A Minute to Win It”. Students participated in a variety of games to try and complete the challenge in under a minute. Students enjoyed taking part, timing and judging to ensure it was fair for all. I think they would agree that it was a very fun activity.

SING FEST

This year, Bannister Creek Primary School once again hosted Sing Fest. The Junior and Senior choirs were joined by students from Samson, Rossmoyne and Harrisdale Primary Schools for the event. Each choir prepared two performance pieces, as well as a number of ‘massed’ songs to sing together.

Sing Fest provides students with an opportunity to perform for an audience, as well as the chance to listen to other choirs. Both our choirs performed exceptionally well and made Bannister Creek very proud of the way they conducted themselves.

I would like to thank all the parents who came to support us, the staff from the attending schools and the BCPS staff for accommodating all the interruptions to allow Sing Fest to take place.

COMMUNITY HEALTH NURSE NEWS

Influenza Influenza, or the ‘flu’, is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches.

People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin.

Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick.

The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose.

Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic.

Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu? The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu.

Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program.

Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhea in children.

Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause the flu that year. After vaccination, it can take up to two weeks for protection to develop, and this protection will last for approximately a year.

The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription, or via GP and immunisation clinics and is provided free for certain groups. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic. Healthy Lifestyle Is your child a healthy weight? Did you know that more than a quarter of Western Australian school children are overweight? Many children at risk of being overweight do not look obviously large.

As children move through puberty and into adulthood, being overweight often becomes more obvious and more difficult to manage. It is easier for children to move towards a healthy weight before puberty and adulthood.

Help your child to introduce small, achievable, healthy habits every day. For some ideas, go to the Raising Children website (http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/childhood_obesity.html). For fun ideas on how to support children and families to be more active outdoors go to Nature Play WA.

It is important to avoid discussing weight with children. Weight loss and dieting is not recommended for children, unless under medical supervision. Healthy habits help children to ‘grow into their weight’.

If you are worried about your child’s weight, talk to your doctor or Community Health Nurse (9258 8053).
