Monday 7th April 2014

This Term the ‘iPad Journey' has continued at Wakool Burraboi Public School, with the introduction of 10

iPads with a syncing/charging dock, wireless internet in the Primary room and now also in the Infants room.

Due to the funding from National Partnerships and the Sydney Myer Foundation Education Grant we have

been able to make these educational purchases. We would like to again thank Sharon McInnes for

registering our school for the grant and Deniliquin Intereach for acting as our funding partner for the grant.

Many thanks also to Mr Bracken for sharing his technology expertise in class visits and for writing staff and

student guides on how to purchase free and paid apps, using google drive and more recently how to use

reflector and Mr Buchanan who generously loaned the school his own personal MacComputer so the

purchasing of apps can be done via configurator. Staff continue to work together to evaluate and collect

evidence investigating the following questions;

How can we best manage the iPad devices across the school?

How the iPads be used to enhance learning across the curriculum?

With the iPads for both classrooms now set up, we have been focussing on using the iPads so they support

the needs of a 21st century class, and give our students the skills they will need to be successful in the

future. Below is a list of qualities that 21st Century learn-

•creative

•collaborators

•critical thinkers

•problem solvers

•independent researchers

•responsible citizens

•able to drive their own learning

We think iPads fit into the context of the 21st century classroom at Wakool Burraboi Public School because

they are;

•technical - minimal time wasted booting up, with fast access to apps and the internet

•learners - appeals to a variety of different learners and learning styles

•apps - lots of different apps can be used to support learning (come in and chat to staff if you would like to

know which ones to download, we are constantly evaluating which apps are best)

•creativity - combine different apps to show children's learning

•new way of teaching & learning - using apps such as; iMovie, iReadWrite, Creative Book Builder, using QR

codes in the classroom etc

It is hard to believe that this is the final week of the Term. We have had a very busy start to the year and thanks must go to our hardworking and dedicated staff and caring parents whose endeavours have led already so many exciting opportunities for students this year. As I have mentioned before, working to continually improve the school and what it offers to the children of this community is a privilege. The benefits of the innovative opportunities and the quality of the education and support a small school offers is not to be underestimated. ASR Our 2013 Annual School Report has been uploaded onto our Wakool Burraboi Public School website. Please take the time to revisit the highlights of 2013 and see what progress we have made towards our school targets and programs. Soccer Session This Thursday at 9.00a.m. all students will have the opportunity to participate in soccer classes organised and sponsored by the Deniliquin Junior Soccer Association. The clinics will be conducted by Victorian Junior Soccer Development Officer, Mr Dave Coward. National Testing Days (NAPLAN) All Year 3 and Year 5 students and families are reminded that the 2014 NAPLAN testing has been scheduled for Week 3 next term. Tuesday 13th May - Language and Writing Wednesday 14ht May - Reading Thursday 15th May - Numeracy If you have any queries or concerns about NAPLAN please contact the school to organise a time to meet and I will endeavour to be available. Tomorrow I will be travelling on the bus to Deniliquin with students from our school, Barham and Tooleybuc schools who have been invited to participate in the 2014 'Aspire Me' Drama Camp at Oaklands. Thank you in advance to teachers at our school for your flexibility and assistance so that I am able to supervise students for the morning session. Kadyn Wallace, Leonard McClay and Ned Mathers will travel to Oaklands where they will work with Helen Dickie in the area of 'Characterisation', Alyce Fisher– with 'Improvisation' and Danielle O'Keefe using 'Voice and Sound'. Our students are extremely lucky to have this opportunity. In numeracy sessions students have being encouraged to use their ‘HOW 2 Learn’ habit ‘questioning’. Samual worked with a partner in the fraction activity. He checked his friends understanding of simple fractions and his own by asking questions. Samual tried to trick his partner by asking them ‘What type of fraction would I have, If I changed the order of the playing cards?’ mm I wonder did they convert their improper fraction to a mixed number? Don’t forget to complete your HOW2Learn survey, the students have done theirs and the teachers are busy doing theirs this week. To give families more time before they need to hand them in a raffle will be drawn on Friday rather than Wednesday and all families who wish to give feedback via the survey will go in the draw.

Have a lovely final week of Term and enjoy the Easter break with family and friends.

Mention head lice and most of us instantly develop an itch. You'll find these little critters at every school across Australia - and probably the world - at some point during the year. While head lice and nits, (the eggs of head lice) are certainly annoying and persistent, they're not dangerous. Here's everything you need to know to rid your kids of head lice and nits.

Nitbusters' myth busters

Kids with head lice don't always scratch. The only way to rule out infestation is to look carefully through your child's hair.

Head lice are only found on the human head.

Head lice and nits live in long, short, curly, straight, clean or dirty hair.

They are not found on family pets.

Shaving your child's head is radical and unnecessary!

Head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding, carpet or anywhere else in the environment.

Head lice don't leap or jump. They crawl from hair to hair, from one head to another.

Treating anything other than the human head does not get rid of head lice.

There is no way to prevent your child from getting head lice.

You may be able to help reduce transmission by tying girls' hair back and braiding it.

Never use insecticides, methylated spirits or kerosene on your child's head.

Some essential oils, including tea tree oil, can trigger a reaction in some people. Tea tree oil is a proven antiseptic, but its effectiveness as a head lice treatment has not been demonstrated.

You don't need to use an expensive commercial product.

If you do decide to use a commercial treatment on your child's head, read the instructions very carefully. Removing head lice and nits

You'll need:

a bottle of cheap hair conditioner

a towel

a thick tooth comb

a fine tooth comb

A roll of paper towel

Steps:

1. Sit your child on a chair or stool in front of you. Wrap a towel around their shoulders to catch conditioner spill. (You may want

to put a video or TV show on, as this process can take a while.)

2. Apply a cheap, pale coloured conditioner generously to your child's hair. Work it through to coat every strand of hair. For long

hair, it may be easier to tie one side of the hair off, and work in sections.

3. Head lice breathe through small openings along their abdomens. By coating the hair and therefore the louse in something thick

and slimy, these openings close over, shutting down the louse's breathing for about 20 minutes – long enough for them to stay still and be combed out.

4. After you've applied the conditioner, use a large comb to part small sections of the hair, starting from the nape and working

upwards toward the crown.

5. When the hair is detangled and manageable, use a fine lice comb and run through each section several times. Eggs are often

found behind the ears and toward the back of the head. By combing from the bottom of the back of the head up, towards the top and front of the head, you're more likely to find the head lice.

6. After each comb out, wipe the conditioner on the paper towel. If your child has head lice, you will see them on the towel

(they're a little like small, brown, chia or sesame seeds.)

7. Keep combing each section of hair until no further lice or eggs appear on the paper towel. Often you will see lots of old egg

casings that may take a while to remove.

8. Once you have combed and re-combed each section of hair, either re-plait or tie it back if it's long enough.

9. Head lice often congregate on the crown of the head, so it's not until you reach these last sections of hair that you'll find adult

lice. However, heads that are severely infected will have adult lice everywhere.

10. Repeat at least twice over the next few days, until you can't find any more in the conditioner. You'll never be able to get all the

head lice and eggs out the first time. However, in the days after your first treatment, the eggs will hatch and you'll be able to catch the crawling nymphs (young lice).

Head Lice - Have been reported within our school. The following information has been

taken from the NSW Health Department’s Nitbuster Program.
