Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher interviews were held on Thursday 20th September. It was encouraging to see many parents coming to see the subject teachers. Thank you for the reading the learning task feedback as this made the interviews very beneficial. Some students and parents took the opportunity to seek information from their class subject teachers about the subjects offering for the next year prior to finalising their course selection for 2019.
Building program and Facilities
These last 2 weeks have been busy with the completion of the Science Block and the emptying of A Block for the commencement of its refurbishment. From the commencement of Term 4 science classes will be in the new science classrooms and the Art and Technology classes in R Block.
The courtyard landscape structure is to be completed during the school holidays with the planting of the garden beds to completed later.
The students and staff have shown great responsibility and resilience - two of our College Values, manoeuvring around fencing and building works.
Thank you and Farewell to the College’s previous cleaners
On Wednesday 19th September an afternoon tea was held for the school’s previous cleaners Tyrone and Felicia to say thank you for the 20+ years that they provided the cleaning service and occasionally security and maintenance for the school. School Council made a presentation to them.
Year12 These last 2 weeks and during the holiday classes, revision is the priority. October tests are conducted during the first week back in Term 4. Excursion to CERES Community Environment Park-30th August
On 30th August SC514 was fortunate enough to have visited the Centre of Education and Research in Environmental Strategies (CERES) – an award winning, non-for-profit, sustainability centre – to partake in various activities to reinforce our understanding of energy renewability and conservation.
A highlight of the excursion was a fully functioning example of energy efficient accommodation: the EcoHouse. The house applied the latest in insulation technology, appliance power, ‘stand-by’ power, roof eaves and the energy saving potential of double glazed windows.
The fossil fuel workshop illustrated electricity generation using coal and oil via a model power station. Our understanding was supplemented with a sneak peak at
human-powered generators and hair dryer that was powered by pedalling a bike. Ultimately, we gained an understanding of fossil fuel formation, the disadvantages associated with its overuse and discussed future solutions to these problems.
This little adventure into the untapped potential of a world powered by renewable energy has helped to reinforce our awareness of unsustainable living that plagues Australia and the world at large.

Cuckoo Restaurant Excursion
On Fri 7th Sept, students of German from Yrs 9 -12 went out for an all-you-can-eat lunch at the famous Cuckoo in Olinda. Students enjoyed a wide range of entrees, mains and lots of German cakes and desserts. We were also entertained with live music, German songs, the chicken dance, yodelling and even playing the cow bells! The owner also complimented the students on their wonderful behaviour. A lovely -and very filling- afternoon!

Australian Geography Competition 2018
Earlier this year, 27 Highvale Secondary College students participated in the Australian Geography Competition. This short but challenging test assesses students’ knowledge and skills in both physical and human geography.

CHAMBER STRINGS PERFORMANCE AT THE MULTICULTURAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
2018
Last Wednesday evening the Chamber Strings made another successful visit to Government House to provide musical entertainment for the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence. The performance was held in the magnificent ballroom while the guests were arriving and again at the conclusion of the ceremony. In the late afternoon and early evening we played for almost 2 hours a program which included the first movement of the Vivaldi 4 Violin Concerto in B minor, a stunning Wieniawski duet by Din Din and Dan Dan Wang and a mixed selection of baroque, contemporary, Latin and Celtic works. The function was attended by the Governor, Linda Dessau and her husband Mr Tony Howard, the Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Minister for Finance, Robin Scott, Mrs Inga Peulich, the Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs and numerous other dignitaries.
They and the 350 guests were very appreciative of the performance, with Mr Tony Howard coming and congratulating the students during the reception. Also captivated by the students’ performance was acclaimed Indian musician and film director Girish Makwana who was amazed by the music he heard.
It was a fantastic experience and a wonderful opportunity to again, showcase the talent and hard work of our students. Everyone is to be congratulated for their wonderful effort and a special thankyou is given to Mrs Linton and Mrs Lam for giving so much of their time and effort to ensure the success of the evening.
