Maths Counts...

It is amazing the different type of fun you can have with mathematics.

Tuesday March 14th wasn’t just about celebrating π and circles, it is about showing how much fun and enjoyment you can have whilst

still learning (or remembering) about mathematical facts that underlay most of the activities that we as members of society are involved

in every day.

It also helps to raise the profile of mathematics in particular so that students can be encouraged to learn.

So as a wrap up of Tuesday, the following occurred:

The school was on the front page of the Champion Post thanks to Mr Wynstra’s drone taking just the right picture at the right time.

* Miss Dearden made pies for her year 7 and year 8 class.

* The school ate 10 dozen hot pies.

* Marcus Moss won the pie eating competition (on a technicality because he actually ate the bag it came in as well)

* Callum Byrne won the pie eating competition (on speed, however on a technicality lost because there was still some gravy on the

bag)

* Mr Brown won the pie eating competition (but didn’t because Marcus ate the bag as well)

* Caleb Hill recited π correct to 29 decimal places – a great effort!

* Mr Quince, Mr Kim, Miss Dearden and Mr and Mrs Wynstra all wore tee-shirts with funny symbols on them.

* Money was raised by the SRC to help fund projects around the school.

A big thank you to the staff and students for getting involved, to the Champion Post for giving us their front page for the day, and a

very big thank you to Smeaton’s Bakery, whose distinctive square pies enable people to remember one of the most important formulas

for circles because their πr2.

It was delicious!!

Mathematics Competitions

The first of the competitions for the Australian Mathematics Trust are about to commence

with four of our students attempting the Computational and Algorithmic Thinking online

test on Tuesday.

This test is a measure of how people think through solving problems and does not require

previous programming or intense mathematical skills.

Also, two primary students are commencing a three week competition for the Mathematics

Challenge for Young Australians.

This again concentrates on the ability to solve interesting problems in different ways and is

designed to stimulate creativity in solving problems.

First Place!!!

Victory for Parkes Christian School at Moomba Birdman Rally On the 11th March, six students from the Design and Technology class travelled to Melbourne to enter their flying creation into the Moomba Birdman Rally. On the way to Melbourne we were invited into the Locksley airfield where the HGFA (Hang Gliding Federation of Australia) had a fly in. Students met our pilot Phil Seeley and were able to witness several pilots fly. Some of our students experienced what it is like to fly a hang glider, strapping in for a run across the airfield. After arriving in Melbourne the students enjoyed a meal and relaxed with some ice skating before the Birdman rally Sunday morning. Students spent the first couple of hours rebuilding the flying machine due to transport damage and quickly restored it to flying condition. All of the entrants worked well together offering support, advice and supplies to ensure we were ready to fly. The flying conditions were difficult due to a cross wind that caused all the craft to fly anything but straight, Phil launched from the platform with the assistance of Nick Strudwick, Mitchell Day and Ethan Peters flying a total distance of 11m, winning longest distance in the hawk category. Michael Paul, a veteran pilot at Moomba having won the longest distance 10 times achieved a distance of 10m. The overall Moomba Birdman Rally champion was Actor Samuel Johnson raising more than $25000 for his charity “Love your Sister Foundation”, Parkes Christian School supported JDRF raising $2100, collectively all 15 entrants raised more than $80000 for their charities. Congratulations to students for an amazing achievement, and a huge thank you to all those people who assist-ed us throughout the project. A special thank you to Neil Unger for transporting our flyer and to David and Wendy Richards who assisted us throughout the project and being part of the trip to Melbourne.
