ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH

“An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins’” (Matthew 1:20-21).

Nothing creates wonder in us more than a newborn baby. Ten tiny fingers and ten wiggly toes. Those baby blue eyes and that soft, cuddly skin. The joy and miracle of new life being born into the midst of an otherwise pain-filled and Sin-stained world. Even complete strangers stop to wonder at the beauty of a newborn child being carried through the grocery store in its mother’s arms. As you can imagine, we’ve been doing

a lot of wondering around our house these past couple of weeks as we have welcomed home Liam Isaac. What a gift of God’s grace!

Joseph, too, surely wondered at the angel’s announcement that Mary, to whom he was engaged but not yet married, was expecting a child, a son. Even more, Joseph surely wondered at the meaning of his son’s name, Jesus, “for he will save his people from their sins.” Could it possibly be true? Could this newborn child actually be the one promised by God from of old? Could this

infant boy actually be the one who would finally bring peace and forgiveness and new life to God’s people? Surely Joseph wondered. Surely we still wonder yet today, standing in wonder as we gaze in hope-filled anticipation at the newborn baby born in Bethlehem for us.

Our Advent and Christmas theme here at St. John’s over these coming weeks is The Wonder of It All. Each weekend as we worship together we will stand in wonder at the promise of Christ’s coming among us in Word and in Sacrament.

November 28/29 - The Wonder of Christ’s ComingDecember 4/5 - The Wonder of John the BaptistDecember 11/12 - Chancel Choir Cantata - “A Great and Mighty Wonder”December 18/19 - The Wonder of Joseph

In addition, special events such as the Global Mission Cookie Walk on December 4, the King’s Brass Christmas Concert on December 6, the Soup and Song Concerts each Wednesday at 12 noon, and an extra special Sunday School Christmas Program - “JOY Story” - on December 19, all add to the wonder of this special season.

The Eagle NEWSLETTER November 24, 2010

New WebsiteSt. John’s Lutheran Church has launched a new website! The website will be under the same address or URL as before (www.stjohns-springfield.org). Using an editable blank template programmed by a company called Clover, the goal with

the new website was to design a clean, organized and modern site with a variety of intuitive features. A site where people can learn about the church, stay up-to-date with church events, register online for activities, easily access calendars and devotions and provide various other resources for people to stay current with the happenings of the church.

The new site works in the Adobe Flash multimedia platform which allows for the aesthetic interactivity of the site. This means the site will require the Adobe Flash Multimedia Player. Whether you may know it or not most of you already have flash installed on your computer as it is vital for many other websites. If you do not have Flash and load the site in your browser the new site will prompt you to download and install Flash and this is recommended so that you can enjoy the full benefits of the new website. If you are using a computer without Flash or a mobile device, such as an iPhone that cannot run Flash, a HTML version of the site will still load giving you access to the content.

The new site is an ongoing process and we will continue to build and improve on the existing content. The next step will be to optimize our site for search engines using tools such as Google Ad Words to make it a top visited church site in the central Illinois area. We hope that the new website will be a valuable resource for current members and a draw for prospective ones.

Thank you to the hundreds who have made their commitments for the mission and ministry of St. John’s in 2011. Each and every commitment is essential and important. Coffee Price Increase Thank you so much for your strong support of Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate! As you may know, the Global Missions committee of St. John’s sells these items not as a fund raiser, but as a mission project to help farmers in developing countries to receive a fair price for their products, thus enabling them to properly care for their families. Therefore, all products are sold at cost; there is no mark-up by St. John’s. You may have heard that coffee prices have increased sharply in recent months, and Equal Exchange, our supplier, has also had to increase their prices. Any coffee ordered

after October 11, 2010 will cost $ 0.75 more per bag for 12oz. bags and $ 1.00 more per 1 LB. bag. We ask for your understanding, and we hope that you will continue to support Fair Trade! The Global Missions Committee

Written by St. John’s own Schlosser family, “Joy Story” is a delightful tale that incorporates familiar characters from a children’s movie while sharing the traditional Christmas story of Jesus in the manger. All of the Sunday School classes will be involved, so make plans now to support their efforts while celebrating this very special time of year! Prelude music shared by student musicians will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the PLC, followed by the play at 9:15 a.m.

ConfirmationThe Confirmation students studied The Lord’s Prayer during a class session in November. One of the activities associated with this session included each of

the six Confirmation small groups writing a portion of a prayer, and the prayer the groups used as a model was The Lord’s Prayer. Continue reading to discover what they wrote…

God our Father, you are our maker, protector, and savior. Your heavenly home be bountiful, your plan put into action. Please give us healing and strength, and help us to make good choices. Forgive us for breaking the rules, like texting and chewing gum in class. This helps us learn to forgive others. Keep us from sinning, save us from evil, and deliver us into your holy hands, for your love is everlasting. Don’t let us give into temptation. Don’t let the devil win. Your victory is ours for eternity! Amen

Cookie Walk 2010Calling all cookie bakers! Once again, the Global Missions Committee will host a fabulous Cookie Walk to benefit The Committee for Children – Someone Special Program, on Saturday, December 4, 2010, in the Parish Life Center lobby. Extra-curricular activities can include musical, cultural, sports, educational, or other enrichment activities.

Someone Special is for school aged children (K-12) in Sangamon County that have been referred by a social service or educational professional. The program is anonymous and the funding is paid directly to the activity provider. The Committee for Children began as a child abuse prevention initiative in 1975. Saturday, December 111 Samuel 2:1-8Psalm 146:5-10Luke 3:1-18

God Is No Fool!Once, a man said, “If I had some extra money, I’d give it to God, but I have just enough to support myself and my family.” And the same man said, “If I had some extra time, I’d give it to God, but every minute is taken up with my job, my family, my clubs, and what have you--every single minute.” And the same man said, “If I had a talent I’d give it to God, but I have no lovely voice; I have no special skill; I’ve never been able to lead a group; I can’t think cleverly or quickly, the way I would like to.”

And God was touched, and although it was unlike him, God gave that man money, time, and a glorious talent. And then He waited, and waited, and waited... And then after a while, He shrugged His shoulders, and He took all those things right back from the man, the money, the time and the glorious talent. After a while, the man sighed and said, “If I only had some of that money back, I’d give it to God. If I only had some of that time, I’d give it to God. If I could only rediscover that glorious talent, I’d give it to God.” And God said, “Oh, shut up.” And the man told some of his friends, “You know, I’m not so sure that I believe in God anymore.”
