From Their Excellencies:
Long-eared, fluffy-tailed greetings to Ourhoppingly great populace! The snow is gone! The bitter cold is finally making a retreat! Warmer days are coming! And a ton of stuff is on the calendar to keep us all very busy. Coronation is this upcoming Saturday in the barony of Windmaster's Hill. Logan and Esa will be starting Their second reign together and We look forward to an enjoyable summer with them. The Tourney of the Golden Rose is April 18 and this is a big deal on many levels. First, it's a fantastic event full of pageantry and good company. Second, on a personal level, We both plan on fighting together on Countess Kari's team so this will be His Excellency's return to the field after a long hiatus. Think good thoughts for His shoulder to cooperate. And third, this will be the big push for fundraising the money needed to purchase new baronial coronets (which are still being researched). A million thanks to Dame Hrothny for spearheading this effort. Please plan to come to the event, buy some lumpia for lunch, and help out in any way possible. Hot on the heels of Golden Rose is another great opportunity for Marinus to shine at the Southampton Renaissance Faire in Courtland. Many of us plan on attending for the weekend and camping to add to the atmosphere. It's a great chance to show off the SCA, meet new friends, and practice camping in temperate weather. And next thing you know it will be time for Crown Tournament on May 2. Which will mean time for Us to also start planning for Ruby Joust at the end of May. We encourage anyone interested in autocratting an event to consider a bid for Baronial Birthday his fall. September 26 would be a perfect day, as it's good weather and the same date as the original baronial investiture. With that in mind and with a heavy heart, We want to let everyone know that We will be stepping down as baron and baroness at this baronial birthday. It will be the end of Our three year term, and while We would love to stay longer, We see many other ways to serve the barony while allowing others to step into this critical role. This means, though, that this upcoming event is a chance for much revelry, pageantry, a visit from royals, and the beginning of new traditions for Marinus. If you have questions about the baronage position or anything else, never hesitate to contact Us. We bleed blue and green and always want to see Marinus shine. With love, Aradd and Isabel

From the Chronicler:
The end of the War of the Roses and the death of Richard III. Is it truly over? Seems the
reburial of the monarch, Richard, still provokes deep sentiments, perhaps even hostility,
between the notoriously feuding factions.
The tug of war that was prelude to Richard's reinternment was something of a media circus, but
for this observer the interviews seemed to showcase many modenr English citizensto voice
some deep and profound thoughts of the significance as to who he was -- and more
importantly, how he became king of England.
Where Richard is spoken of there is always the shadows of mystery and rumors of the princes in
the tower. Talk of murder, corruption, and his ambitious plan to usurp the throne. The two
houses, Lancaster and York, could never be further divided and yet united in their rivalry.
Recently discovered genealogy has shown my family to have descended from Lancastrian lines
in England. The timeliness of these facts really brought home the impact and weight of the
importance and history that is Richard III.
I pray we all take the time to experience the history unfolding before us.

Amazed, we found a yellow, Viking A-
Frame hut. Their sail converted to a
shop keeper’s sign, as a tavern might
announce its presence to the traveler.
The odors of a kitchen’s meats
welcomed our senses with a bravado
rarely felt. We entered to meet our
fate; more eager than fearful, our
stomachs and curiosity took the lead.
The food offered was Viking named,
and learning their custom was easy
with very helpful Vikings giving
samples of sauces and detailing their
culinary wares. We found their
French fries, made by hand, to be
extremely good as were their
fantastical sandwiches named after
heroes like Freya, Ragnar, and Baldar.
The onion rings (also VERY GOOD) and
especially their sauce overwhelmed us
all. If more Vikings like these settle,
bring on the Dark Ages!
Tastes so good that even
you might want to sing!
Im a Viking,
Im a Viking,
So are you,
So are you,
Lets go get a Ragnar,
Lets go get a Freya,
Burgers and Fries,
Burgers and Fries!
Landing across the waters we
immediately found many a cow
tipped or taken as the once common
landscape of cattle and farms was no
more. Industry was evident. Leather
scraps, horns for drink, powder, and
sound seemed to sprout from the
very trees. The people, our cousins
were joyful and happy! How could
this be if Vikings were near!
We have heard of Vikings before.
The ear-lopping, the raiding, torture,
pillaging, nervous sheep, even the
holiest of shrines and their monastic
brothers tormented. Even the beer
being taken away!
So how can this be that Vikings being
so welcomed? We had to find the
answers.
There were three of us making the trip across the waters that separate our dear cousins to the north, of the lands
of Tir-Y-Don, from our family and friends in our beloved home of Marinus, the Barony by the Sea. It is of this very
sea, of which is dear to us, that we cross through the mists of early morning fog in our adventure to discover
whether the stories are true – that Vikings have not only arrived but settled and are becoming prosperous!
15
The service was quick and efficient, after only moments our orders were brought out hot and fresh. The
proprietary Viking Sauce was delicious, especially when added to the in-house, homemade fries which
they prepare fresh, almost hourly, meeting large demands!
Inside the hall is small, cozy, with a mounted television, and seating for 10 to 12 people. During our visit
we noticed timbers being fashioned for additional seating on their grounds which, to our delight, would
undoubtedly be a welcome addition once the warmth of coming seasons arrive.
Getting on good relations with one of the warrior chiefs, Dave, we learned the Vikings have yet to give up their
wandering, exploratory ways when a glimpse into their planning taught us they seek expanding into the ruins of
Rencester and install a burger garrison of much larger and more ambitious services. The rumors of wine and
beer, larger inside seating, and other opportunities to draw upon seems to burn hot within these barbarian
warriors like the rush of a mighty fire, ever moving, ever growing.
We looked about as we ate and found their barbarity to be non-existent! No wonder our cousins were
happy to see them settle nearby! Their hall was clean with fresh paint, well maintained, and decorated
with attention to detail. Their generosity of refilling drinks was legendary. Their burgers, sandwiches,
and sides were found delicious, filling, and worthy of revisiting.
As our hourglass drained its last grains we found it sad to voice our farewells, vowing to return soon. A
visit here was more than a meal at an inn. It was more than a stop at a tavern. It was a pause to share
life with new family and friends. We will return. Soon.
