NAPLAN 2015—Yrs. 3 & 5

"The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7

and 9. It has been an annual event for schools since 2008.

On Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May, students will take the 2015 NAPLAN tests.

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not

a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards

for all Australia children. It also provides valuable information that allows schools and governments to better target effort and

support to help all students achieve their potential and acquire the basic skills to help them build successful and happy lives.

All students are expected to participate in the tests. Students with disability may qualify for reasonable adjustments that reflect

the support normally provided to them in the classroom. Some students with very specific circumstances may be exempted from

participating in the tests. For information about participation in NAPLAN, you can go to: http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-

carer-support.html

NAPLAN tests fundamental skills rather than specific content, and as such is not a test for which students can study or

drill. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of

their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. The use of services by coaching

providers is not recommended.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to

monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s

results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is available at www.nap.edu.au."

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS FOUNDATION Dear Parents, It’s week three already and the children are back in the swing of classroom routines and learning. Our Religion and Inquiry Based Learning focus revolves around “Living Things”. In English we are learning about questioning techniques and non-fiction texts. The language of questioning is being explored and we ask that at home you continue pointing out the various words associated with questions, such as, who, what, when, why, where and how. In Mathematics we are focusing on the numbers eleven to fifteen, along with revising the numbers 1-10. We have been measuring using informal units of

measurement e.g. unifix cubes, icy pole sticks, strides etc. FB Library time has been changed to Tuesday mornings at 9am. Please return the form indicating whether you are available to attend The English Information Night on Thursday May 7th at 7pm. Don’t forget library returns on Fridays and please ensure your child’s iPad is charged and with them daily. Kind Regards, Christine, Libby and Louise

YEAR 1/2 Today marked the first day of Footsteps and all of our 1 and 2’s loved getting up and moving. They looked great dancing like crocodiles, emus and frilled neck lizards to Men At Work, ‘Land Down Under’. We will be dancing up a storm through out Term 2. In Term 2, our inquiry topic is ‘Healthy Eating’. We are looking at what is means to be healthy by looking after our body and mind. Thank you to the parents that have volunteered their time as classroom helpers. We appreciate and value your time in the classroom. Our literacy programs couldn’t run without you. If you haven’t signed up but are keen to help out, contact your classroom teacher. Current Working With Children Checks are needed.

As the specialist teachers will be going on camp next week, we won’t have specialist classes. Anita, Brigid, Catherine and Kim

YEAR 3/4 Greetings from 3/4, We are now well and truly back into the swing of things! After a very busy first few weeks with the Reconciliation ceremony, things have begun to settle down. Looming on the horizon however is NAPLAN and preparations are under way to ensure the children are going to be ready. May 12th is Language Conventions and Writing, May 13th is Reading and the 14th May is testing day. These tests are hopefully not causing anxiety levels to rise too much and we are simply approaching them as ‘normal’ days. We are sure the children will do great! In the classroom we commenced Maths groups this week with our focus on Subtraction. The feedback so far has been positive, with a noticeable level of enjoyment at working with a new group of children. In Literacy we wrote some extremely emotive rhyming war poems last week for our Anzac Day service, which those in

attendance hopefully enjoyed. Our focus now is on persuasive writing and will then move onto Narrative writing. We are finishing off our Inquiry unit this week on the Centenary of the landing at Gallipoli and will then commence our unit on Animal classifications. Already the excitement for our overnight camp at the Zoo next term is growing! With the Grade 6 Confirmation ceremony on Friday night we have used our Religion lessons to discuss and learn more about Pentecost and the Gifts and Fruits of the Holy Spirit. We would like to wish all the candidates well on Friday night and are sure it will be a wonderful occasion. That’s it for now. Until next time, bye for now! Rob, Janet, Joanne and Jo P

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOMS

YEAR 5/6 Year 6 News Team Inter school sport Friday the 24th was our first inter school sport day. The three sports we were play was Basketball, Rounders and Football. Basketball For basketball there are two teams. For the first team the scores were 42-4 we won by 38 points. The second team won 38-24 by 14 points. Football The team played really well together but unfortunately lost 20-23 by only three points. Rounders In rounders we had too many people so we had to have two teams. The first game it was a draw but everyone had fun. The second game we won 3-4 and everyone put in 100%. Those were the first Inter School sport games for 2015 By: Caroline V Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden program Every Wednesday the grade 5/6s

have been doing the Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden program. This program includes activities like cooking and exploring the plant and bug life in the garden. Lately we have been doing projects a out either a plant, a bug, or a type of food. We have also cooked a few different foods using resources from our garden, like when we made basil pesto we used the basil from our garden. We have also made ANZAC cookies, dampers using the pizza oven and pumpkin scones. By Milly Young Homework The homework that is given to you in grade 5/6 is fun, interesting and has deadlines. The deadlines help with time management skills which are needed for later in life. In spelling we have different ways to do it, such as a word find or a paragraph including the words, the choice is yours. I love the homework in 5/6 it is a challenge but who said a challenge was bad. A quote I once read said, "A life without challenge would be like going to school without lessons to learn.

Challenges come not to depress or get you down, but to master and to grow and to unfold your abilities". The author of that quote was unknown, but I know they were right. Confirmation Friday the 1st of May is the year sixes Confirmation. On the day we will have a retreat day, the year sixes will meet Bishop Peter Elliott and will talk about what we are doing on that night at 7:00 pm. The year sixes had a talk on Wednesday 22nd last week and we talked about renewing our baptismal promise, and which strength we are, out of wisdom, right judgment, courage, knowledge, understanding, reverence and wonder and awe. Most kids and parents went for understanding. By Audrey Tasevski

Japanese Student Teacher

Sacred Heart will again be hosting a Japanese student

teacher this year, for the last three weeks of Term 3.

The approximate dates are from Saturday August 29th until Thursday

September 17th. Approximately ten students will be coming to Melbourne and

will be hosted at ten Catholic Primary Schools in the South-East.

The student is currently studying Education at Aichi University of Education, a

public university located in Aichi Prefecture in the Chubu region of central Japan.

The aim of the exchange is for teacher trainees to experience a different

educational environment, deepen intercultural ties and forge friendships, as well

as to become more independent and learn to live and operate on a day-to-day

basis in English.

All student-teachers are aged 19-21, have

conversational English and are planning to

be either primary school teachers or English

teachers at secondary schools upon their

graduation from AUE with a Bachelor of

Education.

We are asking for a school family to provide

a ‘homestay’ for the student. You need to reside close to the school or to be able

to drive the student-teacher to school each day. $35 per day will be paid to the

host family which is expected to cover two meals per weekday and 3 meals per

Saturday/Sunday.

If you are able to help please contact Jacqui Reed

[email protected] for further

details.

As a re-sult I would like to remind parents that the front door must be shut at all times, if we don’t open the door for you or our lovely Cleaner Mirta is busy doing her job, please don’t get upset at us just wave at us near the fence and we will kindly let you in. Starting as of next week as it was discussed dur-ing group time we are starting a new program: every week we will be choosing a “Star of the week” student. Every Monday during group time the “Star of the week” will be presented with the certificate for the good job. If the person is absent I will be publishing in the newsletter and then it may be collected at your convenience. Good luck!!! Alex & Co. Service mobile: 0449 252 191
