EARLY LEARNING PROGRAM AT DCS!

MOVIE FUNDRAISER

On Thursday (Feb 20) we'll have our next Mexico Missions 2020 meeting. Please plan to attend. The meeting will be at 6:30pm in the DCS secondary school (room to be determined). This is the same evening as secondary par-ent-teacher conferences at DCS, which we also encourage you to attend.

We expect the meeting to be 1 hour long. Amanda Rahn, a program coordi-nator from One Life One Chance will be with us and will share more about the program and what to expect. She can also answer questions that may come up.

Peter Terpstra will also be present at the meeting. Peter will take over leading this trip in June and will accompany the group as trip leader in September. Peter and Jeremy Tinsley will continue planning the trip together throughout the spring. Peter has experience leading missions trips, including youth group/school mission trips to Africa. Our Mexico 2020 team will be in great hands with Peter.

Do you have any refundable beverage con-tainers lying around the house? Why not do-nate them to the Duncan Christian School Grade 12 Missions Trip 2020! For pick up, please call either school office.

Also the Mis-sion trip stu-dents have an account at the Bottle Depot called Dun-can Christian School Mexi-co Mission. Anyone can return bottles to the depot (and mention the account before computer entry of returns begins) to help fund all mission students to Mexico in Sep-tember!

Thank you for your support.

2020 MEXICO MISSION FUNDRAISING

Sandy Veenstra, Karen Boer and our previous staff member, Fern Holmes, will be traveling to Cuba during spring break for a hiking and humanitarian trip. They will be accompanying a larger group, totaling about 19 people in all. They will be visiting an orphanage, schools and medical centres to distribute supplies and offer encouragement. The leader, Mary Hof, has done several of these trips in various Central American countries. For this Cuba trip they are collecting supplies such as used clothing, particularly men's clothes and shoes, ball caps, toiletries, razors, small toys, rope, school supplies, reading glasses, duct tape, and especially fishing tackle since we'll be visiting a fishing village. All items can be dropped off at DCS labelled Sandy or Karen. Thanks so much for you help!

Chargers’ win gives Island zone two spots and B.C. championships - check it out!

Our Team is coached by: Michelle Nederlof, Tammy Klassen, Sarah Jones(Klassen) and Olivia Bakker https://www.cowichanvalleycitizen.com/sports/dcs-helps-island-add-provincial-berth/ DCS helps Island add provincial berth Chargers’ win gives Island zone two spots and B.C. championships by KEV-IN ROTHBAUER The Duncan Christian School Chargers helped Vancouver Island earn a second berth in the provincial single-A girls basketball championship by win-ning their last game at the provincial cross-zone tournament hosted by Unity Christian in Chilliwack last weekend. The two cross-zone tournaments are designed to help with provincial rank-ings and determine provincial berths, and Duncan Christian made an impact with their 55-28 victory over Fort St. James. Player of the Game Kristine Williams led DCS with 18 points and 25 rebounds, Julianna Kapteyn had 11

points, and Grace George put up 10 points and 16 rebounds. The Chargers were defeated in their first two games of the tournament, falling to Maple Ridge Christian 80-36, and Grand Forks 70-27. Against Maple Ridge, George had 13 points and 17 rebounds, Player of the Game Candice Bennett had 12 points, and Williams added nine. Against Grand Forks, Williams had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Ellie Kremer posted five points, and Morgan Nederlof was named Player of the Game.

In the News...Duncan Christian Chargers second at South Islands - Check it out! By Kevin Rothbauer https://www.cowichanvalleycitizen.com/sports/duncan-christian-chargers-second-at-south-islands/

The Duncan Christian School Chargers will get a favourable draw at the Island single-A boys basketball championship after a strong showing at the South Island tournament that DCS hosted last Friday and Saturday.

The Chargers opened the South Island tournament with an 80-42 win over Chemainus, followed by a competitive 94-77 loss to Glenlyon Norfolk in the final.

DCS had nailed 18 three-pointers in a win over Chemainus on the previous Tuesday, and hit 10 from outside when the teams met again last Friday, including four from Jordan Wilson, accounting for all 12 of his points on the night. Jameson Hengstler had 22 points and six rebounds, Nathan Powell had 13 points and four assists, Cam Stevens had 11 points, Elias Floucault had 10 points and nine rebounds, and Andrew Yong had six rebounds.

Hengstler led the way with 24 points and seven rebounds against GNS, with 18 points from Stevens, 12 points from Powell, nine from Jordan Day, and a team-high three assists from Logan Jacobson.

“We did a pretty solid job, but the few moments of ill focus and lack of discipline cost us the 17 points that they beat us by,” DCS head coach Jim Brandsma said. “They are a good team, and we were just happy to be within 17 knowing why they had gotten those points.”

Just a week earlier, GNS had defeated DCS 86-46 at GNS’s own tournament. Jacobson had 14 points, while Hengstler had eight points and 13 rebounds. The Chargers then lost to Southpointe by a 60-40 score, with 13 points and nine rebounds from Hengstler, seven points and 10 boards from Floucault, and eight points each from Day and Stevens. The Chargers wrapped up that tournament with a 74-70 loss to Osoyoos. Hengstler led the way with 28 points and 21 rebounds, Wilson had 18 points and nine rebounds, Stevens had eight points, 13 rebounds and four assists, and Floucault had four points and 14 boards.

The Chargers will play in the Island championship at Nanaimo Christian on Feb. 20-22.

Duncan Christian’s Andrew Young is surrounded by Chemainus defenders as he tries to score during the teams’ game at the South Island tournament last Fri-day. (Kevin Rothbauer/
