Farewell year 12
As we approach the end of term 3 we have
formally said goodbye to our year 12
students. After 13 years of schooling, it is
certainly a time filled with mixed feelings of
excitement and apprehension for both
students and parents. Over the last six
years our year 12 students have made
significant contribution to the growth and
success of numerous programs at
Crestwood High School including Peer
Tutoring, Peer Support, Diversity Day,
sports programs, performing arts, social
justice, charitable projects and fundraising,
student leadership, public speaking,
debating and the Barista and Joost
programs.
Our year 12 students have earned the
support and respect of the staff through
genuine commitment to their school work,
the positive relationships they have
maintained and of course through their
individual and endearing personalities. They have certainly helped shape
Crestwood High School into the wonderful school it is today. Their Year
Advisor Mrs Karen Fornari, has been with this year group every step of the
way since year 7 with Mrs Wright as their Deputy Principal. They have
worked closely with Year 12 as they progressed through each stage of learning
and through the trials and tribulations of adolescence.

Page 2
On behalf of Year 12, I thank them both for their
uncompromised dedication to their education and the well-being
of this year group. I would also like to acknowledge the hard
work and commitment of their teachers who have given a huge
amount of additional hours in marking, feedback, mentoring and
support.
The graduation ceremony held last night was not only to farewell
our Year 12 students but to formally acknowledge and celebrate
their achievements. On behalf of the Crestwood High School
community I would like to thank our Year 12 students for the
contributions they have made over the years and wish them the
very best for their future.
Happy and safe holiday break
Finally, I would like to thank the dedicated staff of Crestwood
High School and the ongoing support of our community. The
success of our school is measured by the engagement and
success of our students and this would not occur without the
commitment of our whole school community.
Wishing a happy and safe holiday to all

Last night the school community farewelled our year 12 students at their graduation. It was a wonderful
celebration of six years of schooling. These students are characterised by their respect and friendship
towards each other and their teachers. They have grown into a remarkable group of students who have
shown exceptional leadership, academic success and a genuine concern for each other. We would like to
thank them for their contribution to Crestwood High School for the last six years and we wish them all
the best wishes for the Higher School Certificate and beyond.
Our most recent NAPLAN results have been very positive and we are delighted with the results. In the
last 18 months Crestwood has been committed to improving our literacy and numeracy results in all
years across the school. Resources have been directed towards Professional Learning in these areas to
support staff implemented targeted strategies. In particular staff have focused on the following initiatives:
Staff training in Focus On reading
Staff training on Learning progressions in Literacy and Numeracy in their own KLA
New Stage 4 courses PBL and Future Focus Learning which aims to develop literacy and numeracy
through inquiry based learning
Developing quality assessment tasks that develop Literacy and Numeracy skills
Embedding Literacy and Numeracy techniques in all KLAs
Our successes have included an increased number of students in Band 8-10 in 2018 in reading, numeracy,
writing, spelling and grammar and punctuation.
The collective efficacy of staff in implementing these strategies within programs and pedagogy will
continue to ensure our students achieve the best learning outcomes possible.
When we return in Term 4 our Year 11 students will of course commence their HSC studies and
assessments. It is important that our Year 11’s plan and organise their school work early in the term to
ensure they are maintaining the content in class and are able to consolidate their work when they get
home. It is expected that students will commit to regular study at home. Those students who achieve
the best academic results factor in revision almost each day as a regular part of their school schedule.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and their families a relaxing holiday. Stay
safe and we look forward to seeing you all in Term 4. Just a reminder that Day 1 is Monday the 15th
October. We do not have a staff development day next term so students need to be ready to go Day 1.
Tania Wright
From the Deputy Principal
Our annual induction of SRC and School Captains took place on Thursday 13th September. Twenty six SRC
members of years 7-10 were inducted with our 12 School Leaders for 2018-2019.
These 38 students will now form the new SRC which will meet together daily as a joint home room and be called
upon for assistance in a wide range of school activities.
The Induction Assembly was attended by 60 family and friends as well as the student body when the official duties
of School Captains was passed on from the Captains of 2018 to the new leadership body.
Student Leadership is highly valued at Crestwood High School and our Captains of 2018 have provided us with
outstanding role models and a number of positive legacies which we will take into the future. The establishment of
“House Spirit Week” was embraced by the school community and we look forward to seeing that develop even
further in the future.
Our new captains assisted with the graduation of Year 12 last night, one of their first official duties and then next
term they will attend the Mitchell Youth Leadership Forum.

and passion of these young speakers and look forward to further success as they continue to hone their
craft in 2019.
Year 10 Drama Showcase
On Tuesday night, our Year 10 Drama students presented their original monologues to an audience of
their friends and family. Throughout the term, they have been studying how to write, direct and perform
a monologue. For many students, this was their first time performing in front of an audience other than
their peers. Their teacher, Miss Merriman, was very proud of their efforts! Congratulations to all
students!

During this term the Industrial Arts department purchased a new laser cutter for the use
of all year groups. This cutter has an extremely large variety of uses ranging from etching
glass and metal, to engraving on solid timber and cutting out any shape imaginable in any
material that is not PVC.
We are in the midst of creating new projects, that can be completed by people of varying
skill levels. My first attempt is going to be with my year 9 class who are making jewellery
boxes. The laser has the ability to engrave photographs into materials such as acrylic and
timber, my class will be making personalised lids with photos or images that they have
created on Adobe illustrator.

J-Ball is a new exciting game that is identified with Hockey, however, the stick and ball is
modified, no shin pads are required, no mouth guards necessary and it is played on a quarter of the
traditional hockey field. The game was designed by Hockey Victoria and is also played in the ACT.
Hockey NSW conducted a J-Ball Inclusion Day on Friday 14th September at Sydney Olympic Park.
Senior students from the Support Unit went along to try this new game and had a fantastic time playing
other schools in the area.
Dylan Martin in Year 12 has for the last 5 years competed in various BMX Racing competitions.
He trains weekly at Penrith BMX Club and has travelled around the state to compete in competitions.
Recently Dylan travelled to Casino and was placed third in the finals. Well done Dylan!
