27th November 2015 - Issue 11
Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome to the fourth letter of
the academic year. As you
may well have seen in various
media sources within the last
few days, the Education
Funding Agency has now
agreed the Business Case for
a refurbishment of the 11-16
part of Carisbrooke College. This means that
a significant amount of long overdue
investment will now take place so that some of
the buildings here, which are no longer fit-for-
purpose, can now be refurbished or
rebuilt. This is great news and, as I
communicated this week, this decision is
down in no small part to the efforts of all of our
amazing staff, students and parents last
summer to talk to councillors to assist them in
their decision making processes. From this
moment on, we will continue to work with the
Education Funding Agency to make sure that
the combination of refurbished and new
buildings here will make for the excellent
learning environment that your children so
richly deserve. At the same time, we will
continue to ensure that the progress of our
students remains our top priority at all times.
On Thursday last week, we held a very
successful VI form Open Evening at our
campus in Newport. The event was attended
by students from all over the Island and even
one from the mainland! It was a great
opportunity to showcase all of the things that
go on Post 16 right across our federation and
we now look forward to large numbers joining
our VI form in September 2016.
Finally this week, congratulations to all of our
Headteacher award winners for your excellent
work and learning in school, which has been
acknowledged by a range of staff.
Have a good week ahead.

of exhibitors including Sixth Forms, Further and Higher Education Colleges and Universities,
Training Providers, the Uniformed Services, and Employers.
The aim of the morning was to support and prepare students to make well informed and
realistic choices and successfully manage change and transition to their post 16 choices.

Louise Southwell - Federated Head of English
Last Thursday saw the first Carisbrooke College Drop Down Day of 2016, involving a ‘get to know your House’ element, focusing on boosting the community spirit across all age groups whilst promoting healthy competition.
The pupils were split into groups which held either year 7’s, 8’s and 9’s or 10’s and 11’s, where they participated in various activities such as: who am I?, knots, human rock paper and scissors; this being a practical task looking to promote team work, interaction and communication. All groups took part in a House quiz, which was focused on their associated country, for example Poseidon’s quiz was based on Cyprus. This was used to not only encourage interaction but to develop the pupils’ understanding of their country, whether it was to do with their culture, their food or their natural landscape. Maybe your child can tell you something new about their country?
Some of the Houses took part in various country specific workshops run by different departments. Poseidon and Athena had an Art workshop which looked at ancient Greek art and tribal tattoos, whilst some pupils in Athena took part in an African dance workshop. Those in Demeter developed their understanding of Mandarin, both speaking and writing, whilst Apollo played Kabaddi, a sport well known in Bangladesh, with some year 7’s asking for it to be made part of the curriculum!
The obstacle course was a huge highlight of the day where each House took part in 9 stations to test their determination, coordination and competitiveness. Stations involved target games, throwing activities and probably the most favourite of them all, an activity involving a cargo net and diving through a manmade ‘cave’!
A brilliant day was had by all. It was fantastic to see so many happy faces within the younger year groups, with the older years having the opportunity to enjoy a day away from hard study leading up to their exams.
Geography Trip
One blustery day in November a bunch of year 10s braved the wind and rain for a trip to
Sandown to gather data for their controlled assessment. They counted pedestrians, cars,
and walked miles mapping land-use to help them answer their key question: What are the
costs and benefits of contrasting methods of coastal management? All the students
worked hard and didn't complain despite the wind and rain, even though by the end of
the day there were some interesting hairdos! They got a great set of results and are now
writing up their controlled assessment. Well done year 10 Geographers!
Rugby News
Last Thursday, 19th November, our Year 10/11 rugby players kicked off their season
in style beating the ‘noisy neighbours’ in style. The first half was a closely contested
affair with both sides starting strongly, each team’s players not wanting to give away
possession of the ball. After 20 minutes of deadlock a ‘controversial penalty’ awarded
against us resulted in a Christ the King player forcing his way in to score. The
resulting conversion was missed.
Half time 5 – 0 CTK.
We started the brightest in the second half and in fading light Ben McLoughlin
levelled by scoring a superb try after a series of rucks, Elys Norman coolly converting
(5 – 7). In nearly pitch black conditions our Carisbrooke boys stood strong against a
wave of CTK attacks, Richard Pitman making numerous tackles supported well by
Tom Randall and Aaron Meakin. In the dying minutes Jack Cangialosi broke through
the CTK defensive line winning a scrum 10 metres out. Our scrum had been far
superior all game with CTK unable to handle the drive, led well by Josh Abbott. Tom
Randall then managed to pick the ball before bursting through in an individual effort
to secure the win by scoring. Unfortunately Elys was unable to convert this time but
in truth it didn’t matter.
Full time CTK 5 – 12 Carisbrooke.
The boys were outstanding in every aspect, no one backed out of a tackle and they
really did put their bodies on the line.
Connan Fisher, Robson Dowden, Jamie Byers, Elys Norman, Aaron Meakin, Rhys Potter, Elliott Robson, Jack Cangialosi, Jack Simmonds, Ryan Whitewood, Ben McLoughlin, Liam Paul, Tom Randall, Ben Rayner, Richard Pitman, Ollie Rigby, Jacob Eastwood & Josh Abbott

Medication
In line with school policy and procedure we are unable to dispense medication to
students unless we have written consent and the medication has been provided.
If you think your child may need to take medication (paracetamol etc.) you will need a consent form from the Hub. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] or ask your child to collect a copy. This
should be returned to the Hub with the medication, which will be kept locked in school.
It is the parents/carers responsibility to provide the school with the medication required. The medication should be as dispensed, in the original container and must be clearly labelled with:
• name of child • name of medication
• strength of medication • how much to give i.e. dose • when it should be given
• length of treatment /stop date, where appropriate • any other instructions • expiry date (where there is no expiry date the medication should have been dispensed within the last 6 months)
NB: The label “To be taken as directed” does not provide sufficient information. Precise information must be supplied.
Your child will be able to go to the Hub and request to take it when necessary. If your child needs medication in the school day and the form and medication has not been provided, we will do our best to contact you to ask you to bring it in.

Isle of Wight Appeal for donations for Calais Refugees
A cold winter is upon us and there are thousands of people in 'The Jungle', the Calais refugee camp, who are in desperate need of warm clothes, sleeping bags and footwear to get them through the Winter. There is also a growing number of vulnerable children in the camp. Olivia and Katie, who run local youth group Initiate, will be taking a van packed with Aid to the camp on December 18th. Along with the items mentioned above, they will be taking Shoebox gifts packed with gifts to make this Christmas slightly less horrific for the young people on site. You can help by providing any of the below items. Please bring all donations to reception by Friday 11th December. If you would like to put a shoebox together, please visit the Facebook page 'Isle of Wight Shoebox Appeal for Calais Refugees' for guidelines of what to put in the box, and how to label it correctly. Other items in need (all sizes): Hats, gloves, scarfs Welly boots Hiking boots Warm jumpers Heavy waterproof jackets Sleeping bags Blankets
Drop Down Day - Trial Exam Results
In addition to the House activities during our Drop Down Day, Year 11 students had a careers
focussed morning with a Trial Results Day when they received envelopes containing their
results from recent trial exams. Ex-Carisbrooke students, who are now studying at our VI form
campus spoke about how the Trial Results Day they attended this time last year had a
positive impact on their final results as they realised what they needed to do to improve their
trial grades. Students were reminded of the various revision sessions available and the
support provided to help them achieve beyond their potential in the summer. They also had
an opportunity to draft a C.V. and letter of application, their next step in their pathway to
Post 16, leading to mock interviews in January.
