Attendance

Check out the information on page 7 of the

Newsletter. Students need to be at school

every day on time to enable them the best

chance of success.

Student Representative Council

It was a pleasure for our school to host the

Western Plains Student Representative

Councils day on Wednesday. Congratulations

to the Cobar students on their organisation of

the day. Our Student Representative Council is

recognised for the outstanding contribution they

make to our school and the effective way

students manage the council. Thanks must

also go to Mr Marshall for his time and effort in

assisting the students.

Best Wishes

Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Mr

Menton who was injured whilst playing

basketball with students.

New Staff

Mr Rigby will begin work in the HSIE

department after the long weekend on Tuesday

9th June. Mr Rigby is coming from Newcastle

and will be an additional member of staff.

School Planning

School teams are currently developing the

milestones to measure and evaluate the

strategies in each of the Strategic Directions in

our three year plan. The plan is available on

our school website. Each year, schools will

also have to complete a self-assessment on

their strategic directions and once every five

years there will be an external validation.

From the Far West to the Western Front

Cobar and the Great War

Congratulations to Kay Stingemore on her

outstanding work to produce this book. We are

very lucky to have Kay also work at the High

School as an English as a Second Language

teacher.

Amie Hill (Jacklin)

It is wonderful to have Mrs Hill back at work

after her wedding celebrations. It will take

some of us time to remember to call her by her

new name. Thank you also to Bianka

Jacobson who so capably relieved in the

position of Head Teacher whilst Amie was on

leave.

Tell Them From Me Surveys

We participated in a student survey earlier this

year. We will again be participating in a

student survey towards the end of Term 3.

This will enable us to compare results from the

beginning of the year. At that time we will also

be engaging in a parent and a staff survey.

These surveys will provide information that will

assist us with our planning.

Uniform

With the colder weather, please ensure that

your student has a school jumper. Please

contact the school if you require assistance

with uniform.

Science / TAS Department Report

This Term has been a busy one for the Science and TAS department at Cobar High. The students have

completed their Half Yearly Examinations and the teachers are now finalising their marks and reviewing

the development of students skills in preparation for report writing.

A highlight this Semester has been The Science and Engineering Challenge

which was held on Tuesday 28th April and Cobar High came a close second to

Broken Hill. The students showed some remarkable problem solving skills

with the catapult group winning on the day and other groups gaining a placing

in their respective challenges. The 31 students who attended the challenge

represented Cobar High School with excellence and respect – well done to all

of you!

In Science classes in Term 2, Year 7 students have been learning about Forces such as friction, magnetism

and gravity before starting the topic Separating Substances.

Year 8 have been learning about Resources, especially renewable and non-renewable energy sources and

the global impact of the use of fossil fuels.

Year 9 have been learning about the universe and the advancements in technology assisting our

understanding of the universe.

In Year 10 we have just finished Evolution and starting the Physics based topic of motion.

Our senior Biology and Chemistry students have displayed commitment to their studies and done well with

their first Assessment Tasks. Their teachers look forward to seeing continued dedication as the Yearly

Examinations approach us in Term 3.

Students have been equally as busy in TAS. Our Year 9 & 10 Industrial Technology Metal students have

completed their wrought iron hose racks which will be handy at home and are now starting to work on their

wrought iron coffee tables.

Year 9 & 10 students studying Industrial Technology Timber are finishing off their chess boards in time to

practice their skills for next year’s chess competition. Students have been cooking up a storm in the kitchen.

Our senior Hospitality students have been organising their upcoming work placements and ensuring that

they are developing their skills in preparation for this. The Hospitality Cafe has been a hit with staff

receiving a delicious caffeine hit on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings.

Information and Software Technology students have been working on their understanding of hardware, by

building a virtual computer, multimedia by completing a marketing portfolio and have now started

gathering data to create a class database.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge

It is a requirement of the students in the Self Select classes to participate in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge

each year. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to

enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to

read more and to read more widely.

Students must keep a record of the books that they have read and record this information online. Years 7-9

must read a minimum of 15 books with a maximum of 5 choice books (books of their own choice). Student

reading logs can now be entered online. Entries close 21st August, 2015.

English Teachers will assist in the organisation and entering of reading logs. Please visit the school library or

the town library for appropriate books to read.

Year 11 and Year 12 P.A.R.T.Y. program

Year 11 and 12 students attended the P.A.R.T.Y. program this week. This program is

run by Royal North Shore hospital and aims to promote the Prevention of Alcohol and

Risk Related Trauma in Youth. I think that I can speak for everyone who attended

that it was extremely confronting for all of us. P.A.R.T.Y attempts to reduce the over-

representation of 15 to 19 year olds in trauma wards around Australia.

P.A.R.T.Y exposed the students to a wide variety of

trauma situations that they would normally not

experience in their usual day to day lives. Some of the

situations that students were confronted with included

visiting the morgue of Cobar Base Hospital, hearing

stories of people that have been severely affected by trauma in their youth and

listening to the doctor’s and nurse’s stories about what happens to the human

body when it is involved in a serious trauma. This was an amazing opportunity

for students to speak to actual emergency room and intensive care doctors and

nurses to get an insider’s view on the effects of traumatic injuries.

On behalf of the Year 11 and 12 we would like to say thank you to Maura

Desmond who was responsible for the organisation of the program as well as

Cobar Base Hospital, the Police and Ambulance personnel who came to the

school to help our students realise the importance of being safe and the effects of the choices that they make

every day.

Each year our students are offered the opportunity to participate in external competitions run by the University of NSW, The Australian Geographical Society and the History Teachers Association of Australia. These competitions provide our students with valuable experience of testing procedures outside our school environment. Dates for 2015 entry fees and competition dates are:

Payment must be received by the due dates, or if you prefer, several/all entries may be paid in advance. It would be appreciated if correct money (cash or cheque) could be brought to the Administration Office as we do not carry change.

All students are invited to participate in any/all of the competitions. If your student is not in a Select Class, information and return slips may be obtained from Year Advisers or the Front Office.
