Volume 11 Issue 1 December 2017 Note from Janet, 2017 HPDA President Dear Members, 2017 is rapidly coming to a close. I hope you enjoyed this year’s programs as much as I did. Thank you, Cec Rae, for arranging such a diverse offering of painting projects for us! I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with for next year. We also enjoyed several wonderful seminars. Thank you, Carolyn Culwell, for arranging them. This is a big job and we appreciate all your efforts! Thanks also to Jan Wells for infusing new life into our Ways and Means and Community Outreach projects. And thank you members for responding in a big way to our plea for memory boxes. This was an amazing year for the Chapter! We will end the year with one last event! Please plan to attend the Holiday Party on December 9. We will begin set up at 10:30 am. Please bring decorations so we can make the cafeteria look festive. Thank you to those who have volunteered to bring the soups and salads/vegie tray. If you have not let me know you are coming, please do so. I want to make sure there is enough food, etc. Our new board was elected in November. I look forward to being your President for 2018 and working with this new board. As members, it is your responsibility to let your board know what you would like to do in 2018 and then support those decisions by attending the meeting and program. One way to do that is to bring ideas of projects you would like to learn to the December meeting. If you are a teacher, bring projects you would like to teach. I am sure you can bring some interesting and exciting learning possibilities. If you were at the meeting in November, you are aware I was waiting for Mark Polomchak to send his contract. Well, he did! His seminar is scheduled for March 10 & 11, 2018! We will open registration at the December meeting. There are limited spaces so please act quickly. For details, see Carolyn’s seminar article in this newsletter. I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas or Happy Hanukah and a wonderful New Year. See you soon! HPDA Community Outreach – Ways and Mean – Jan Wells Ways and Means Door Prizes Because our enhanced door prize money-making efforts for the chapter were so successful in 2017l, we’ve decided to bump it up again for 2018! Be watching for an email from me after January 1st which will give all members information on changes to our “DOOR PRIZES” project.

Community Outreach

Memory Boxes As of November 11, 2017 chapter members have donated 87 Memory Boxes to our community outreach project for infant bereavement. Congratulations and a great big THANK YOU to Judy Hopkins for donating the most memory boxes this year!! Judy decorated and donated 26 beautiful memory boxes and even encouraged her painting buddies to donate another 9!! Judy will be awarded her prize at the HPDA Holiday Party.

For 2018 we will continue the MB project just as we did in 2017. Members are encouraged to decorate and donate as many boxes as possible during the year. We will have “show and tell” at each meeting (time permitting) and there will be a prize awarded at the end of the year to the person donating the most boxes. Great news for all members: Verlene Siska asked if there was a way she could help with the project until her painting skills are a little more refined. She was asked if she would like to basecoat boxes in order to help speed up the painting process for the seasoned painters. Verlene enthusiastically agreed she would be happy to help in that way. If anyone else would like to help move things along by base coating boxes, please let me (Jan Wells) know.

Painted Pig Project Update

I contacted Adam Robe, Executive Director of Families First, for an update on the PPP. Here is a portion of the response from Adam:

“The bank display fell through and they never got back to me about a new date to be able to display them. In the meantime, four or five of the pigs were purchased while we had them on display in our office. I will double check how many we have left of the ones your group painted. I will tell you that almost every visitor we had in the office had nice things to say about the work your group did! We had planned to take them to our November event as well, but given the limited space we ended up having, we couldn’t display them properly, so we did not take them. I will keep you posted on the other ways we will be displaying them and putting them up for sale.

Thank you again for everything. Your group is fantastic, and we really enjoy working with you”!

I asked Adam to let us know if they would like our help with the PPs in 2018.
