25th October 2019
Welcome to the final term of 2019 everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful school holiday time enjoying lovely and special moments with family members and friends. World Teacher’s Day
This special day is celebrated every year in schools during October. It is a time when we acknowledge the hard work, dedication and commitment of our teachers. I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank our wonderful Barnier teachers for the absolutely outstanding job they do for our students every single day! They go over and above every day and make the education and wellbeing of our children their highest priority. Please take the time to let your child’s teacher know how much you appreciate what they do for your child. You could give them a card, send them an email or thank them personally. When this happens it means so much.
This can happen at any time throughout the school year, not just on World Teacher’s Day.
P&C Meeting
We are having a P&C meeting on Monday 28th October at 7:30pm in our school library. Our P&C parents do an outstanding job of supporting our students and our school. We'd love to see more parents involved. It's a great way to meet new parents, make new friends and be part of a team that works together to support a great cause ... our beautiful students!! Please come along, it's also an opportunity to find out information about what's happening in our school and have your say within a kind, caring, respectful, happy and inclusive environment. School Attendance, Punctuality and School
Uniform
Please ensure that your child attends school every day (unless they are sick, injured or infectious) and is always on time for school so they can make the very most out of every

opportunity to learn and develop good habits for later life. It would be great to see all Barnier students in full school uniform (including hats) every day. This shows that they have pride in their school and promotes a sense of belonging and connection. We thank all parents for their support with these important matters.
Litter
Please speak to your child about the importance of disposing of rubbish responsibly and respectfully. It belongs in the bin and not on the ground. This is a continual problem at Barnier, and one we need your support with.
Kindergarten 2020
If you have a child who is starting Kindergarten
here at Barnier next year, please submit an enrolment application immediately. We need accurate anticipated numbers so that we can plan classes and staffing for 2020. Please ring the school office on 9837 1600 if you need assistance with this. We thank you sincerely for your support and assistance. Our Kindergarten Orientation Program will commence very soon. We are really looking forward to welcoming our new students and their families to Barnier. Our Kindergarten Parent Information Night was held Wednesday 23
rd October. This event was very
well attended and a great success. Special thanks must go to Mrs Thompson, Miss Moon and all staff who assisted on the night as well as Mrs Kellett and Mrs Jones, our school banking and P&C representatives who provided information for parents. Thanks also to the many parents who attended. Our Kindy Transition Sessions are 30/10, 6/11, 13/11 and 20/11, 9-10:30am. These sessions are essential for our new Kindergarten students. The children will have opportunities to become very familiar and comfortable with the school environment (classrooms and playground) and staff as well as making new friends and learning about school expectations and routines. Children who attend our orientation days will be more prepared for next year and less anxious about ‘big school’.
Best Wishes to our Choir
Eight of our choir students will be performing at Sydney Town Hall on Sunday evening, 27
th
October as part of a charity event. We wish them all the very best and thank Mrs Weisback for her time, hard work, passion and dedication leading the choir this year.
Drinking Water As we approach the hotter months of the year it is important to be mindful of the importance of adequate water consumption. The following information is important to consider:
DRINKING WATER Many children and teens aren't consuming enough liquids - especially water - and that lack of hydration could affect their physical and mental health. Even though for most youngsters this is not an immediate, dramatic health threat, lack of hydration is an issue that could be reducing
their quality of life and well-being. Children can be more susceptible to dehydration than adults. That can lead to physiological problems such as neurological issues, increased demands on their kidneys and heat stroke. In one recent study, about half of the children and teens surveyed weren't getting enough hydration. The likelihood of inadequate hydration was 76% higher in boys than girls. Nearly 25% of the participants said they drank no plain water at all. Lack of water is a significant issue for children. During the school day, access to water may be limited, and many children may even avoid consuming water because they prefer not to use the toilets at school. This may stem from lack of privacy, embarrassment or even bullying or other risks associated with being in the toilets. There is also the effect of selling of juices, sports drinks and bottled water. The good old water fountain or a refillable water bottle may lack appeal to trend-conscious youngsters. Need for water.
Proper hydration is crucial for physical processes such as circulation, metabolism, temperature regulation and waste removal. Excessive dehydration can cause serious problems but even mild dehydration can cause headaches, irritability, poor circulation, reduced physical performance and poorer mental functioning. However, the good news is that this is a problem with a simple solution. By helping children drink more plain water - a low-cost, no-calorie beverage - we can improve their hydration, which may allow many children to feel better throughout the day and do better in school. By increasing water intake by even 1 cup a day, hydration is improved.
Some tips to help boost children’s water intake:
Keep water cold. Add frozen water bottles to a child's lunch pack. The bottles will keep the lunch cold and thaw throughout the day so the water is cool to drink. Cold water often tastes better to children than water at room temperature.
Don't rely on a child's thirst. Thirst is not
always a good indicator of hydration. Children need to have access to water throughout the day.
If a child dislikes water, try infusing water with
fruit (such as lemons), vegetables (such as cucumbers), or herbs (such as mint) to give the water a flavour without adding extra sugars.

Event Reminders
As part of our environmental education and awareness focus at Barnier Public School, we will be holding a ‘Barnier Clean Up Day’ on Tuesday 29
t h October. The motivation behind
these days is to promote our PBL value “ responsibility” and care for our environment in a positive manner, as well as instilling pride in our students for their school.
On this day the Environmental Group will be holding a stall after school (2:45pm).
Pot Plants: $5 each
After learning about the negative impact litter has on the environment students have explored ways in which they can recycle materials. Using old milk cartons the students have created pot plants which they have planted succulents in.
Fresh produce: Varies from 50c - $2
A variety of vegetables have been planted and taken care of by proud Barnier students. These will be harvested and available for purchase on the day.
Worm tea: $2
Students have been feeding our wiggly friends left over crunch and sip along with some recycled paper. As a result we have worm tea.
Worm tea contains a higher count of good bacteria. Bacteria puts nitrogen back into the soil; making it available for plants to absorb. Manure and worm castings are slow to release nutrients. Liquid fertiliser makes nutrients immediately available for plants to absorb.
If you have a large garden or many houseplants, worm compost tea can be diluted with water to cover more area. You simply add 50% water to 50% worm tea. I suggest putting your worm tea in a watering can, however, a sprayer or spray bottle works well too. Just be sure to strain the worm tea before adding it to a spray bottle. Now simply water your house plants, outdoor potted or hanging plants, and your garden. Cover a whole plant with worm compost tea including the leaves. Many people believe that the beneficial microbes in worm tea help protect plants from diseases.
Environmental Update
Raffle Tickets: $1 each or 3 for $2
Prize: 4Ocean bracelets made from recycled materials valued at $29.50 (AUD) each. Why 4Ocean?
The Environmental Group discovered that our litter often ends in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which is a collection of litter in the North Pacific Ocean. It spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan.

We were shocked at what we discovered but as we kept researching we learnt that there was still hope. A group called 4Ocean was out there with a mission to end the ocean plastic crisis. They are a non-profit group who are funded primarily by people ’s 4ocean product purchases. They clean the ocean and coastlines by making investments in people, technology, and equipment.
Boats
They hire captains and clean-up crews that use their fleet of vessels to recover ocean plastic and other harmful marine debris seven days a week.
Booms
They’re installing barricades at river mouths to prove they’re an effective way to stop the flow of plastic from land into the ocean. New Technology
They engineer and invest in equipment that collects plastic and other marine debris from waterways so it can’t enter the ocean. To learn more about this organisation visit:

Thankyou for supporting us by encouraging your children to participate in our school clean up and for coming along to our stall on Tuesday, 29
th October. You are helping us to create a clean and healthy
environment.
Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 4. The countdown to the celebration of learning and Christmas will happen at a very fast pace. Let’s buckle up for the exciting upcoming weeks.
The P&C Colour Run has been postponed to Wednesday 27th November. Thank you to all the parents who have submitted their colour run permission slips and shirt orders. Particularly to all the $5 donations that will go towards purchasing new readers for our school. If you wish to order a T-Shirt for $15 you can still order up until 6th November. Please ensure you have returned the permission note if you haven’t already done so.
If you have lost your note please download it from the school website under whole school note. Here is
the link: https://barnier-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/doe/sws/schools/b/barnier-p/pdfs/notes/whole-school/2019/Colour_Run_Letter.pdf If you are able to assist on the day, please advise your availability to:[email protected], it would be greatly appreciated.
Kindy Transition Mornings (hosted by your P & C) If you are free Wednesday 6th, 13th & 20th November from 9 - 10:30am we would love to see you at our Kindy Transition morning tea where you can share your experiences of school life with our 2020 Kindy parents.
Lost Property Bin reminders:
We are seeking your cooperation in labelling your child/children’s clothes so they can be returned or claimed by your child/children. We are looking into this process and labelling options to minimise uniform waste.
Did you know items that aren’t labelled are sent to
charity bins or sold through our 2nd
hand uniform stall.
Last term we had over 100 items that could not be returned and it was unfortunate as this is a big expense to families. School branded jackets cost between $26-$50, that’s a lot of money thrown away needlessly. We need to work together to minimise this unnecessary waste.
