THAXTED PARK GOLF CLUB
MEMBERS NEWSLETTER
APRIL 2017
Course
The new 6th hole has settled well and Saturday 22nd April will be the official opening date
which coincides with the opening round of The 2017 Presidential Cup.
The practise chipping green is close to completion with grass expected to be laid from the
11th April, this will provide another high quality area in which members can hone their short
game.
Upon completion of the chipping area work will focus on the redevelopment of the new 3rd
hole. Being a par 3 the main focus will be on the green and tee precincts thus making the
overall development a shorter process. Green and tee areas will be laid with santa ana
couch however the green itself will most likely be grown in the same manner the 9th hole
was and this can take up to 3‐4 months before being suitable for play. Some investigation
has been undertaken to identify a quality bent grass provider in SA but this has been
unfruitful up to this stage. Bringing grass in from interstate can be a risky process, so
seeding the green will be our most likely outcome.
A detailed conceptual plan is provided on the next page which outlines the new 3rd hole
development and tee areas for the 4th hole.
Some other general course works currently being undertaken include gypsum spreading
which you will notice looks like fine granular sand over most of the golf course. Daily
irrigation will make this disappear into the ground over the next few days, and is aimed at
assisting sub level clay breakdown.
Members would have also noticed our pathing programme rolling out around the course
currently. Traffic flow is very important for course wear and tear as well as accessibility
during winter periods. Please adhere to all directional signage and roped areas in order for
us to maintain a quality product.
Special Information
We have a small period of time Monday 10th of April until Saturday 22nd of April when due
to the switch over of course works, the traditional 5th hole will be playing as a par 5 into the
traditional green. This scenario could not have been avoided without getting multiple score
cards printed and was deemed too difficult. Members are encouraged to ‘make hay while
the sun shines!’ All traffic flow will be clearly marked.

good humour, banter and a bit of good old Aussie sledging prevalent around the room.
The team names were announced and the differing values that each team will be built on
talked about with the 8 greatest players of all time giving us the team names and colours.

Women’s Sub‐Committee Report
March was a very busy month for the ladies; it was the start of the Southern Group
Pennants and the club Championships. Thankfully the weather remained moderate meaning
no cancellations or postponements.
The Div. 2 pennant team had a 5‐0 win over South Lakes, playing at Ashbourne on Monday
20th. Both teams had the bye on the 27th as Thaxted Park hosted 10 teams and both Div 1 &
2 play at South Lakes on the 3rd April.
Well done to all involved and good luck for the rest of the season. The finals will be played
on the 8th May at Mt Compass and this is the day that Metro pennants begin so we are
trying to qualify a broad range of players to ensure we have enough to fill both teams if we
get that far. (We won both last year)
From left to right‐ June Blackwell, Sue Smallacombe and Chris Stain were the C, A and B Grade Ladies Club Champions for 2017
The Club Championships have been won after 3 weeks of stroke rounds to qualify and
match play rounds to reach the finals. We are pleased to announce the new Club Champion
is Sue Smallacombe who defeated Lyn Wilkeson on the 36th hole – a mighty tussle watched
by most of our lady members. It was exciting……….. exhausting………. exhilarating……….
disappointing (for one!) and played in very good spirits.
The B grade Salver was won by Chris Stain from Robin Laredo and the C grade Salver was
won by June Blackwell from Chris Telfer, with both matches being well played by all
contestants. Well done to all who entered and played the stroke rounds followed by the
match play rounds, and thanks must go to all the caddies and referees for their work over
several days. I believe all the names to go on the honour board are ‘new’ ones, not having
won before. Thanks also to the grounds people and clubhouse staff for their work during
these days and to the committee for providing an afternoon tea for all in the clubrooms.
The Laurel Wreath draw has been done so please check the notice board to see who you
play and when the 1st round needs to be completed; they can be played on any week day
except Thursday.
A number of players are taking the opportunity to play in various Open Days in the southern
areas and the metro area – please check the notice board for those coming up in April. The
21st is the Janet Humphries Foursomes at McCracken and the entry fee includes lunch. On
the 28th at North Adelaide is the Lady Mayoress Golf Trophy Day – again check the notice
board.
Until next month, happy golfing
Lyn Wilkeson (Ladies Captain)
