The story always provokes challenging conversations and deep reflections on the nature of grace. Babee, a French chef, wins the loery and decided to spend all of her money on one feast to celebrate a significant event in the lives of the two ladies she serves. The feast is an unexpected blessing and the ladies are perplexed by Babee’s decision to spend her small fortune in this way. One of the guests at the feast recognises the motivation behind Babee’s action: “Grace, my friends, demands nothing from us but that we shall await it with confidence and acknowledgement it in gratitude.”. John Newton, an ex-slave trader in the 18th Century, also reflected on the amazing nature of grace in the hymn, Amazing Grace. He had much to repent and yet God still saved him. But what is so amazing about this grace? Firstly, it is so unlike our sinful natures that we oſten struggle to comprehend it, let alone exercise acts of grace ourselves. Grace is the unmerited favour of God, a giſt freely given without cost or merit. Every day we enjoy the blessings of common grace, regardless of whether or not we are believers, but the amazing grace that the Newton talks about is deeper still. It is the grace of Christ’s saving work for our sins: "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begoen Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him" (John 3:16-17). At the end of the text study, my students are challenged to think about what it means to act with grace. Spiritual growth doesn’t happen overnight; we “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 2:18). Grace transforms our desires, motivations, and behaviour. Everyday there will be opportunities for all to act graciously to one another. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. 1 Chronicles 16:34 Continue to pray for the Best and Falconer families as they grieve the loss of their loved ones. Pray for healing for the many students and families suffering with colds and the flu. Pray for all the excursions coming up over the next few weeks. Pray for safety for all those who are aending and pray that they will all share in fun, friendship and some good learning experiences. Please pray for continued enrolments across both campuses. Pray for opportunities to speak to friends and family about our school. Stage 4 Debating CompetitionOn Tuesday 9th June, ICS Tongarra Campus is running and hosting a Stage 4 (Years 7-8) debating competition.Debating teams from ICS – Cordeaux Campus, Cedars and Nowra Christian School will visit Tongarra to partake in a round robin style competition consisting of two debates. The topics for these are challenging, controversial and will push the students to consider perspectives outside of their own. Debating is not an easy thing but requires students to think critically, engage with current world issues, construct effective arguments, rebuttal opposing ideas and speak confidently in front of a crowd. The students will be learning valuable skills during this experience that will assist them in all areas of life (We apologise to any parents who might find themselves on the receiving end of a student’s newly acquired enthusiasm and skills in debating). The students have been working hard and we are looking forward to seeing them in action.
