60 years of AIESEC in Serbia

This year is special for AIESEC Serbia because we are celebrating 60 years of developing leadership in our country . Each year, the organization becomes bigger and more people passing our programs. Since establishment, we have directly affected more than 20,000 people and solve many social prob-lems. Our partners are recognizing the potential of AIESEC and help us in achieving our goals. In the coming years we certainly expect more success and leadership steps.

Dear AIESEC in Serbia, It’s a matter of honor and pleasure to address you through 2nd AIESEC Serbia newsletter of generation 2013-14.But before we start with this, lets honor the past of this organization as it is the year 2013, and this year marks the 60 years of celebration of existence of this organization, now why I wish to have a special mention for this is because this shows the true potential of this organization which survived strong through the years of political oppression and unfortunate wars and the kind of leaders this organization has been lead during those times and its ability to run strong still marks the epitome of any entity in AIESEC. But now times have changed, it’s been 13 years since peace has prevailed in this lovely country and is trying to rebuild upon the scars left from the past, and the time is now, there is no more excuse for us to not look forward. The question that I want you to ask yourself as a member of this organiza-tion is, living in a country having a population of 7.2 million of which 20% is youth i.e almost 1.5 million, yet the number of team member and team leader experiences that we have delivered in last 5 years is 2000 and 1000 resp. in approx. numbers which is not even 2 percent of the lot. Considering that our vision for 2015 was to “engage and develop every young individual in the world”, we have failed mar-ginally, taking into fact that the country has 97% literacy rate too. The whole point of showing these stats and numbers was to make you think, the next time you come with a complaint like “we don’t have members” or “we don’t have enough companies”(which apparently according to a report of EU until 2004 there have been a total of more than 3000 companies privat-ized alone) think of what percent of the population of youth have we touched so far, and how can we work towards allowing the same life changing experience that we live each day in AIESEC to reach to those who are alien to such an opportunity in life. For a fun fact, even in India, members complain about having no members or no companies, and I guess with a country of 1.2 billion, I hope you can get the joke haha. Hence again, I would advise you the same thing which I shared in an LCM of LC EF, “Communicate the same passion and energy that you have as a youth in the work you do in AIESEC, and nothing would be impossible”.With this, I thank you for your patient reading, and remember, if you will THINK BIG, you will definitely ACHIEVE BIG. Totally unexpected, I will say that IC was an amazing experience :) And it probably was for anyone that have ever been delegate in the biggest conference of the world`s largest youth leadership provider. But the thing is that everyone has his/her own reasons. One of my reasons to say that these intense 16 days were an amazing experience is, of course, the small fact that it happened in Egypt :) So situation is that young leaders from all over the world are having strategic meeting on how to create more leaders for the better sake of the world we are living in, in the country where huge leadership transformation is happening exactly in that moment, where young people are trying to make their voice heard and influence events that are going on in their surroundings in probably crucial moment in the history of Egypt. In that way location of IC definitely brought whole new perspective to our journey as a delegate. And to make it really clear, what made this journey extremely intense and relevant has nothing to do with security issues and stuff, because, to be honest we didn’t have any problem or incident what so ever, and if there was no internet, I would never guess that some revolution followed by violence is happening 600 kilometers away from us. In Sharm el Shekih, we were pretty safe and hidden away from all these events. What made it so unique is look-ing at Egyptian people that were there. I was frequently asking myself, what is going on in their heads currently? What is their perspective on the things that are happening? And what drives them to make bold leadership stand to be so present and put unbelievable efforts to make this conference perfect for us, while their friends, families and their country is in the middle of revolution? It is an act of immense responsibility and devotion to make sure they deliver what they promised 2 years ago, when they didn’t have a clue that these will be circumstances that they will be hosting IC under.

They decided that nothing can stop them from providing amazing leadership development experi-ences for 800 IC delegates + around 600 interns that have been on their leadership experience in Egypt in that time, because they knew that otherwise, they are cutting leadership development experi-ences for 1400 young that desperately need them. And I think I learned a lot from them. If this didn’t prevent them to host the biggest IC in history, what is preventing us to grow like never before, to create more and better experiences in a surrounding that can be characterized as the perfect one, comparing to IC! I have to say that what AIESEC in Egypt done was amazing and that I have immense respect and admiration towards that. Regardless the session content and country partnership outputs, that we will be talking about in fol-lowing weeks during functional meetings, conferences, visits etc..., there are few more things that hap-pened on this IC that I would like to share with you.First of all, we are successfully discharged from organization of IPM 2013.After all costs payed the amount of 6300 eur of damage fee from IPM 2013 should have been dis-tributed among all countries that had delegates equally. Instead of that we suggested to Global plenary that each country gives up on their part of the damage fee and for the whole amount to be payed to Irma’s account as a donation. Motion was passed and on 10th of September we transferred 6300 eur to Irma’s account for her surgery. I have to say that in that moment I was extremely honored to be president of AIESEC in Serbia, as we were recognized among the network as the entity that really does a great job in doing exactly what AIESEC is there for - creating entrepreneurial and responsible leaders - responsible enough to care about lives of people in need, and entrepreneurial enough to identify and seize the opportunity for bet-ter usage of resources of Global plenary that were currently in our possession. One more great thing happened. On this IC, AIESEC in Serbia was among 20 entities that got Cus-tomer Experience Management certificate as a recognition for all the efforts that we are putting in to customer centricity, quality and intensity of experiences we provide. I have to say huge THANK YOU to Jovana, Petar and representatives of each LC that was participating in CEM challenge for all the ef-forts you put in to the challenge itself and in to transferring tasks from the challenge in to our everyday operations and making it happen in reality. It was one more opportunity for our delegation to feel proud during IC in front of 800 other delegates and one more clear indicator that AIESEC Serbia is on the right track and that we are doing right things. AIESEC Montenegro CeedAIESEC SERBIA IN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK

Starting from this year, our AIESEC „family“ consists of 124 countries, and guess what, our good neigh-bours, Montenegro is on the list. But, to tell you the truth, I coudn’t possible image that my third, or how we Serbians like to say it, „lucky number“ CEEDership will be at newly opened AIESEC Montenegro, in its capital Podgorica. I went in Podgorica the same day I’ve returned from my „second“ holiday in Split, Croatia, just four hours later. You can say that I was in kind of rush. Of course, thanks to our lovely roads, I coudn’t sleep in bus and I was very tired, but, when I met Ivan, MCP of AIESEC Montenegro few stops before we arrived to Podgorica, I immidiatly forgot about my tiredness, driven by his true passion for AIESEC and happines for someone being here, to help them in their, you’ll say, pretty awe-some and motivated by-it-self cause. Remember that words – THEIR MOTIVATION. That was the main reason for my motivation for this experience. I always say that every AIESEC experience is unique for everyone. It deffinetly was unique for me, to be chair for the first time, and even more, to be chair on their first Functional Week ever, with new, fresh members abroad! Explaing them the way of AIESEC, and focusing on OGX as their main goal is to change lifes of 5 students by sending them on internship. Even tough they met AIESEC and its way for the first time, I was stunned by their way of thinking, way of solving problems, and huge number of brainstorming on every session, every break, and on every enegizer! And it wasn’t just that „typical“ motivation-boost on every AIESEC conference. Promotion of internships started day after last day of Functional week and everybody came to work and tell people about AIESEC, not just OGX team members. And of course, the result of promotion was awesome as they are. I mentioned before that I was dead tired when I came, and that everything changed during my trip to Podgorica, first by meeting MCP, and then the rest of MC, and then new members – I didn’t lost that feeling during that entire, beautiful week that I’ve spent there. And guess what – they ARE coming on NatCo 102nd . Nikola Popović, NST Collaboration Manager

Let’s make IT happen!

where: Bratislava, Slovakiawhen: 18.-20.09.why: first meeting of IT cluster!

IT companies are proliferating like crazy, and young people are looking to places other than the govern-ment and large corporations to find opportunity. Or creating it themselves. The cost of starting a busi-ness is lower than it used to be, and technology is growing and evolving at rapid rates. Long story short - it was just the matter of time when will IT became the hottest new topic in AIESEC!

New markets, new opportunities for young leaders and the huge challenge for organization. It seems like the two European regions are making the perfect calculation : CEE with the potential in students who are looking for opportunity and WENA with companies. But something is missing there. Let’s get back to the start:

So one of the main issues that network discussed about at IC 2013 in August were cooperation’s - the whole network talks about ‘co-delivery concept’, as the main solution for our quality issues and efficien-cy . The biggest entities as India, China and Colombia already proved that country partnerships can be great asset in delivering quality experiences (for those who doesn’t know, two biggest country partner-ships in the network, India-China and Colombia-Brasil, are bringing more than 30% of global results!) But still, most of the entities in the network are struggling with this, mostly because of the scope of their operations.

Therefore, when the idea about the cooperations between CEE and WENA in order to grow in IT was born it was clear that partnerships are not enough. That’s how we got the first IT cluster, formed from 15 European countries in order to align needs and expectations on both sides and learn more about the topic.

Organised by Charlotte (AI GIP responsible) and Lessya (CEE regional coordinator) summit has 10 more participants, and we used those 3 days to discuss about the profiles and market needs, problems we are having, strategies, visa processes, minimum quality delivery and to set some goals for further cooperation. And of course, to get to know each other, share some thoughts and GCPs and explore the Slovakian capital :) Overall impression: amazing three days that gave a new insight on how to drive GIP IT!

Follow up is coming soon - first raising is planned for autumn, webbinars for LCVPs, mutual workspace and resource center, stay tuned! Main conclusion in the end was that having in mind market potential and our capacities it’s time for this sub product to scale up this year, and giving our lack of knowledge and experience in this field cluster can be great way learn and to achieve it!

Branislav Balaževic- AI CEED No3- What kind of work are you doing for the AI right now?Currently I am doing a lot of undercover stuff, but one of them is a new education platform / blog that will bring online educations in AIESEC to a new level.

- How did it come to the CEED number 3?CEED number 3? Already? Damn... The story behind it is pretty simple. Don’t completely screw up the first time, do an awesome job the second time (even if you have no idea what or why are you doing most of the time) and make a good (read - better than the first time) impression.

- Could you share something interesting about AI, a fun fact with us?Fun fact. They have Happy hour. Every Friday, a shitload of sweets is delivered to the AI office , followed with a few cases of beer, and everyone is celebrating the start of the weekend. Fun Fact no 2: 3-4 times a week, the AIESEC International is hosting team dinners in their flats. The idea is, the people living in the flat, cook dinner for the entire AI team and every CEEDer/visitor present and everyone eats together in a 20ish square meters room.

- How much did this experience (working with the AI) change you and what are some of the things you learned? As for the experience gained here, simply, it’s priceless.Working with the MC you gain a perception of AIESEC on a local level, you get familiar and adapted to the issues in your entity and you don’t really care that for example Facebook is not available in China. Once you get here and they tell you, a random guy from Serbia, to fix the issue for an African country that you may never even visit in your life and after a few bumps on the road you succeed, the feeling that you enabled an entire country to get into our global network and connect to AIESEC world, you feel like a superhero. Even if you didn’t do anything spectacular from the tech point of view, you possibly changed the lives of a few people doing it, which is the greatest reward you can get while working in AIESEC. AIESEC Serbia over the past 60 years has been activating leadership in Serbia. But it is not AIESEC, it`s the people who made this possible. As AIESEC Serbia from May 2013, we realized 460 TMP and 181 TLP experiences. With this, I started to create a national conference for all team leaders in AIESEC Serbia. The goals, messages, number of delegates, agenda, session outlines, FACIs, accommodation ... Its all great and I love it! BUT! When you recall your own team leader experience, then you know that you are on the right track. It got to my mind, that for me in that moment, vision, support, information and guidance was really important. Other things were created by myself. We just must do the things to gain strength, courage and confidence. You can always be average and do something, but there is a big difference in the way how we can create leaders. I realized that the plan is easy, and can be done by one person. But to realize the plan in a way that you make people responsible for their actions, who are aware of their role and contribution to society, who believe in their team purpose and goals, who are the team, that is a whole different story. In all of this, the role of team leader is one of the most impor-tant. As one team, as AIESEC Serbia, which have nine entities, we all want to deliver big number of quality experiences at all our programs. To support that, we realized national team leader conference called ACT which gathered 100 leaders of AIESEC Serbia on 12th and 13th October in Belgrade from all 9 entities. One more thing, why conference is called ACT? Sometimes, we don`t need a lot of educations, meet-ings, it is simple: Activate Leadership. Create team. Together Achieve. See you at NatCo! On 26th of October we completed the last Lead Up. It’s been a month of leadership expansion. We vis-ited 15 cities across our country. We encourage young people to be the initiators of positive change, to be proactive, to fight for their wishes and views. We tried to make every visitor of Lead up to go home with a new idea, useful information, interesting acquaintance. In this we succeeded. At one of Lead Ups Minister of Youth and Sport Vanja Udovicic visited us and he talked with delegates about their problems and position in society.

Preparation for Lead Ups and NLC was intense. Calling non-governmental organizations, contacting the media, designing materials, communication with speakers, organizing logistics ... A lot of meetings and even more phone calls. But it seems just like an ordinary day for every member of the New Lead-ers team because none of this is difficult. And because we’re all here for the same purpose – the idea for leadership to reach more young people in our country and for us to have a successful conclusion of the project in the end, at the National Bank of Serbia.

Now our goal is that New Leaders Conference (14th and 15th of November) be the best event for clos-ing of our project. We met with many challenges and solved a lot of problems, but we were always a team. Something that characterizes each team meeting is a lot of laughter, positive energy, great atmosphere and shared decision making. We are confident in the concept of the project; we believe in the idea and want to motivate young peo-ple to be initiators of positive change.See you at the place where leaders meet! Pirates TtTFor a long time, NTT Pirates have been silent! But this has come to an end! We heard a Pirate Train the Trainer conference took place between the 4th and the 6th of October. What do you mean you don’t know what Train the Trainer conference is?Ok, here it is. It’s a national conference where delegates gain crucial knowledge about how to create and deliver effective sessions, how to adjust their personal style of teaching to adult learning styles, how to incorporate different techniques in order to keep the listeners intent, how to manage an audi-ence, how to visualize and a lot more! This time however, there wasn’t only a basic track, but also an ad-vanced track, where delegates who are already trainers got to broaden their knowledge and see some things from another (trainer) perspective. Putting on the trainer shoes, they got to learn from trial and error and find a suitable personal style and stamp. It is important to note that we dealt with the greatest treasure of all there – knowledge and experience.Six people from five different countries have been working for weeks to make this conference awe-some. Six people set their hearts to one goal: produce new trainers. So now, AIESEC Serbia has 28 brave young sailors who might have come from different seas, but are equally equipped to transfer their knowledge, sail away and cruise both national and international wa-ters towards the vast seas of trainership. Behold, for here they come! Yo ho! Anja Simić, NTTL

For the first time ever in the local office of AIESEC at The Faculty of econom-ics, oGCDP and TD have been working together strategically. One of the basic foundations for this cooperation was the fact than anyone who passed the interview for the internship was in fact a member of AIESEC, particularly peo-ple participating in the oGCDP, given the fact that they are excellent candidates because they experience one of the most valuable products of AIESEC – an in-ternship. Furthermore, first, second and third year students are the target group, because after they return from an internship they have enough time to join some of the other programs (TMP and TLP) during the course of their studies.

In order for reintegration to be complete it has to be prepared in time. Therefore, the whole process started during the induction, where students were first introduced with AIESEC and some basic things. After OPS, where experienced AIESECers shared the experiences they had gained throughout all four programs, and at the end of EP LEAD where students had the opportunity to hear the concrete possibili-ties and a certain kind of self-reflection, they could apply for membership. As the process of reintegra-tion continued, these were just the basic activities oGCDP and TD worked on together, each function contributing to their creation. It is safe to say the reintegration would be impossible without the cooperation with LC VP ICXs from the countries our interns went to, as well as the constant monitoring of our oGCDP.

The deal with their LC VP ICXs was for our EPs to join their activities. EPs even had special meetings with the EB of the host LC, during which our EPs could feedback the reception and the project. Also, LC VP ICXs monitored the work of our EPs and offered feedback. They contributed in this way, because our EPs returned with good GCP, which we will now implement in our LC. All in all, this year EP management is much more personalized and the direct influence of HR is visible. To sum up, good LEADs, solid cooperation with the hosting LC and inclusion of HR in the OGX processes has enriched our TMP with 10/10 reintegrated mem-bers, who are motivated, aware of the true value of AIESEC and ready to put to use what they had learned in their further work in AIESEC. Proud to be EF!

Hosting, hosting, everybody was talking about hosting and how it is important, but there was noone who was actually going to make such a move. So, my fellow VPs in Novi Sad came to me and said: ‘’WE NEED A CAMPAIGN, IMMEDIATELY!’’ and ‘’more hosting more money for us!’’. So that’s how it started, one of many campaigns I was assigned to in a warm month of August. Right after that my freind Nemanja, VP iGCDP, and I started brainstorming about branding, choosing which media should we contact, thinking about other non-profit organizations which could help us, etc.

First what came to my mind was: ok, green and blue, this campaing is going to be in these two colors, somewhere in between (they told me women call it tirquoise). And so it was. Day after that the material started being designed, stories from people who already hosted were being collected and everything was ready. Then we thought facebook is not enough, why not go to online medias, why even not in traditional medias? Soon after that you could see our PR managers covering all bigger portals, making appearance on radio station, and even speaking about it live on television. In that short period of time you could see a lot of people, not just from communications, working on it and giving contribution to the campaign. Even some AIESECers mada a decision to host. It was like a drop that made circles which became bigger and bigger.

Now, to be honest, we didn’t have numerous number of applications (not gonna say how many) but it was a good start, and even more it was a sign that there really is someone who would like to host and meet other culture, the problem was in us, we didn’t do almost anything about it. We didn’t have the initiative. Soon after we started getting positive feadback from other LCs and we like to thing that we inspired them to start thinking positively. The biggest success, as I would like to think, was when few of us from LC were walking by a train station in Novi Sad and Stanislava, our LCP, stood for a moment and said: jesus, I’ve just looked at some bilboard and for a second I thought it was a hosting campaign’’. Turns out it was a poster for the Manu Chao concert, but pretty similar cause of the backround color and geometric elements, almost like ours.

So it was a clear sign that some of them really had that tirquoise color in their mind and brand itself connected to hosting programme. The brainwash was successful! I hope many people had those flash-backs in their minds! So in the end I would like to say that it really is possible to develop a culture of hosting in Serbia, and I am thinking like if we had managed to do that in that short period of time, what would have been if we worked on it just a week more? I like to think that it was pure front office-back office synergy, which is essential not just to situations like these, but to a whole working process in AIESEC. Start supporting each other more! This is something I would like to call- Enjoying participetion at it’s best. Đorđe Bukinac, VP M&PR

Hey AIESEC Serbia,

as you probably heard, Faculty of organizational sciences officially approved our GIP internships as professional internship that is obligatory subject on 4th study year, so students who go on GIP receive 3 ECTS credits for it. This was really good news for LC FON, and for whole AIESEC Serbia and one more proof that we’re doing right thing. We’re expecting much more students applying for GIP, and also bet-ter positioning and credibility among our students. What is important is to believe in our programs, and impact we’re creating through them. As organization which is present in Serbia for 60 years, we can’t wait anymore. So, let’s everyone of us do one thing, approach one faculty, and for a few months we will become organization whose programs are accepted and supported by all Universities in Serbia. We are here to create experiences, not just to enjoy them. :) Nevena Majstorović, LCP of LC FON

Students from Electrical Engineering Faculty from Belgrade University from now on will be sup-ported from the Faculty to participate in Global Internship program. Firstly, they will be supported and provided with all the necessary documentation needed for visa processes in all the western countries. Secondly, after coming back in Serbia from successful internship, their experience will be accepted as the mandatory internship necessary for them to finish the studies (2 ESPB points). This support from official institution is extremely important for AIESEC, so we can be sure that our core business is recog-nized by the relevant factors in our society, which will surely encourage more young people to take part in main programs and develop their unique leadership potential. After four years, six teams and around twenty conferences, one of the most important experiences in AIESEC for me is the first NatCo I attended – where it all started. During five days of learning, interaction and great atmosphere, I met a lot of interesting and smart people, I got to know better my strengths, weaknesses and fears, and I was really motivat-ed to continue learning and improving myself. I had a chance to try, to fail, to get feedback, to improve, to meet new people and to feel amazing energy and motivation to become better. After that first big step, every NatCo was just getting better and better. People that I met only two years ago and now are my best friends, new experiences and learning points and constant improvement. Being responsible not only for yourself, but for the whole LC, meeting people from many other countries and in the end being responsible for creating and delivering sessions in order to bring this experience to the new generation. As every great adventure, NatCo 102nd will give you opportunity to discover, challenge yourself, change and meet people that will support you along the way. A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step. Start at NatCo 102nd!
