NEWSLETTER 8TH OCTOBER 2021
RALEIGH INFANT & ADMIRALS ACADEMY
MESSAGE FROM MRS KOUNI
ASPIRATION ·TRUST · KINDNESS · FORGIVENESS · RESPECT · RESILIENCE · SAFETY
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to all of the year 6
parents who attended the
meeting about behaviour
expectations and end of year
expectations in maths,
reading and writing. It was
lovely to meet everyone, and I hope to meet more
parents now the COVID restrictions have
relaxed. Your positive feedback and engaging
questions were really appreciated by all of the staff
who attended. Thank you!
This week one of our school values discussed has
been safety and leaders have been speaking to the
children about how they can stay safe in school and
how adults keep children safe in school. Alongside
our school values we expect children to
demonstrate certain behaviours to show the
teachers, pupils and our community they are
keeping the values. Everyone has the right to feel
happy and safe in school and the children
explained very well how they are kept safe in
school.
Please take the opportunity to discuss with your
child how they can stay safe at home and in the
community. Some key topics to discuss with your
child are road safety, safe behaviour near rivers
and railway stations as well as staying safe online
whilst using phones and computers.
Next week everyone in school will be celebrating
Black History month and will be engaging in some
interesting and exciting activities!
To celebrate National Poetry Day, I look forward to
receiving your poems about 'Our World! There is a
£10 book token for each winning entry! Get writing!
Have a lovey weekend!

In nursery we are introducing the scheme ‘Talk for
Writing.’ Our story focus is ‘Goldilocks and the
Three Bears.’ We have started building up
knowledge of bears and their habitat. We have
been looking at bear videos, photographs of different places and meeting
a small teddy bear called Bobby Bear. The children enjoyed asking him
questions. We are focusing on the vocabulary, forest, cave and habitat
this week. The children have enjoyed art work and class discussions to
support their understanding of the new words. The children are enjoying
acting out the role of the three bears in the Goldilocks story through,
songs, dance and roleplay.
NURSERY
Reception
In Reception, we have just begun our Talk for Writing journey, and we are so
engaged in discussing stories and making our own stories. The children
especially enjoy inventing stories using our 5 part story structure; once upon
a time, who, unfortunately, fortunately and finally. We have begun to look at
our Talk for Writing story for this half term 'Shhh!' by Sally Grindley and
Peter Utton. The children have loved learning this story, especially when the
giant wakes up and chases us through the book! We are now in the process
of imitating the story through the use of a story map and actions. The
children have made their own story maps of the story that we have learnt,
and have even tried to label the different parts of the story through
segmenting and blending the sounds that they know.
Year 1
In Year 1 we have been focusing on the book the ‘Snail and the Whale’
by Julia Donaldson. We have been learning about adjectives and how
they give the reader more information. We have used our knowledge of
adjectives to help us create our own story characters and within our
writing. We are working really hard to make sure our letters are
written on the lines, that we use finger spaces and full stops. We
have written a short narrative using the characters we created and
used lots of new vocabulary in our writing such as tiny, soft,
enormous and smooth.
Year 3
In year 3, we have completed our fiction unit on the "Magic Paintbrush". Students have gained
many skills throughout this unit. Specifically we focused on learning about the different parts of a
story, paragraphs, punctuations, vocabulary and grammar. Some key vocabulary learned are;
battered, mysterious, emperor, hastily, and villagers. The students demonstrated their
understanding of story writing by creating their own fiction stories. The year 3's are now diving into
the next unit of our Talk for Writing program which includes our non-fiction text. Our focus is on
procedural writing, and the ability to properly and effectively write a clear and informative set of
instructions.

In Talk4Writing we have learnt a story
based on the Egyptian Cinderella by
Shirley Climo.
We started the unit by looking at
images from the story, discussing
what we could see, what we thought
and any questions we had. We then used the story map to make
up actions to help us learn the story. In this unit we have learnt
how to use expanded noun phrases to add more detail, use
different sentence types and how start our stories by writing an
opening that includes characters and setting. The children all
worked extremely
hard and produced
some fantastic stories.
YEAR 2
Year 4
In year 4, we are following the whole school approach for Talk4Writing. We are looking at different
ways to write a newspaper article. We are at the start of our learning journey, and the students are
imitating and understanding how our model piece of writing was constructed. We will be using the
texts: Macbeth and Hamlet to innovate and enhance our oral communication and vocabulary. The
children will be working independently to create their newspaper articles. We will link this work to our
topic of the power of Monarchy in the House of Stuarts and the Civil War.

Year 6
In writing, we follow a whole school approach of
Talk4Writing. This consists of 3 key stages: (i)
Imitate, where we look closely at how a model piece
of text has been put together. We explore key
vocabulary and identify the features that should be
included. (ii) Innovate, where we use the learnt
features and vocabulary to create a new version of
the original model text. (iii) Independent application,
where we apply all of our learning to produce the best piece of
writing based on the text type being studied. In year 6, we are
currently at the independent application stage for a Narrative – Journey Story. Our model
text was taken from our class text Cogheart by Peter Bunzl.

Year 5
In year 5, we have been using our core text of Macbeth, to explore narrative writing. We have just
finished writing our own stories independently, using the Macbeth story structure as a stimulus. Our
main focus was to include empty words in our build up to create suspense, and to use expanded 'ed'
clauses in our writing. This week, we are still using Macbeth as our core text to explore newspaper
reports. We investigated the murder of King Duncan on Tuesday, when a crime scene was set up in
class.
We are now moving towards writing our own newspaper reports to publish next week.
