STEM at Newcomb Secondary College

We have been hearing a lot lately about STEM education and what it means for our students Here at Newcomb Secondary College we have begun working with all of our Year 7 classes in online coding modules to help them understand how computers are used to control everyday things We are also working with Deakin University and their Technology staff to develop new and exciting programs and activities across our school We have a team of teachers working hard to update our curriculum to make our classes fit better with new and emerging technologies and ways of teaching The following article was published on the ABC Splash website and gives a good explanation that I hope helps you keep up with the topic What is STEM What do people mean when they talk about STEM Nathan Hutchings explains in clear language that the STEM acronym is much more than the sum of its parts

STEM is short for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics The term STEM is used to draw attention to the exciting possibilities of combining these learning areas in the classroom

Building a weather station as part of a class project Investigating the efficiency of certain types of home insulation Both of these projects include gathering and interpreting data (Science) building and using electronics to collect data (Technology) testing the properties of materials (Engineering) and making informed inferences and discovering patterns from numerical information (Mathematics) Why is STEM important STEM is everywhere The minute you check Facebook read your emails text a friend or self-checkout at the supermarket a raft of technologies are working together to make it all work

The computer game industry is bigger than the movie industry private companies like SpaceX supply NASA with rockets and Apple is one of the most profitable companies in the world People are having replacement bones printed in titanium by 3D printers and the civilian and military use of drones is challenging our ideas of privacy and surveillance Almost every aspect of our lives comes into contact with goods services and ideas that have STEM origins Read the full article at httpsplashabcnetaunewsandarticlesblog-b1994868what-is-stem-WTtsrc=EmailampWTmc_id=Innovation_Innovation-Splash|Secondary_email|20151028 Further reading can be found at httpswwwstudentsfirstgovaurestoring-focus-stem-schools-initiative

After a short presentation the visitors toured the College and joined several different classes where they sat and spoke with students The conversations with students about school and their plans for the future allowed our visitors to gain some insights and firsthand knowledge of the challenges for the students and community Our visitors left and were heading off for the afternoon to share their experiences discuss the implications for both business and the community and collaborate on a practical action plan to support Geelong as it transitions to the knowledge industry and digital economy

National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Excursion Masterpieces from the Hermitage

A bus load of students and art teachers went on an art excursion to the National Gallery of Victoria It was a great opportunity to have a look at some wonderful Renaissance art pieces (my particular favourite was Alexander Roslinrsquos ldquoPortrait of Catherine II) You could really understand and feel how Catherine the Great (Queen of Russia) collected art and wanted to be perceived by her people She also wanted to be portrayed in the art itself as a caring monarch

ParentStudent Portal Updates In order to keep up with the latest features and functions we have had to update the software used to operate our Xuno Portal Unfortunately this update has required the Portal to now be accessed using only Chrome or Firefox as a web browser This is due to Internet Explorer not being compatible with settings needed in the management software of Xuno If you do not have Chrome installed it can easily be downloaded free by searching for Chrome Browser Download and following the instructions Set Chrome as your default browser and it will also import all of your bookmarks We apologise if this has caused any problems but it is important that we keep up to date with the latest software versions to provide you with the best communications possible

If you need any help installing Chrome or setting up Xuno please contact Mr Stephen Bath at the school

2016 Student Computers As mentioned previously we will be adding a student computer to our 2016 booklist for all year levels We have seen an increasing number of students taking up the option of bringing their own device to school and there have been noticeable benefits In 2016 students will still have the option of providing a computer they have purchased elsewhere or ordering one through our JB Education portal Having your own computer means that you are able to access Internet resources in any class via the school wireless network In many classes from 2016 onwards students will be enrolled in online tutorials and will work at their own level through self-paced lessons and help activities Newer reference books also provide access to digital content that needs to be accessed via student computers A lot of the work provided by teachers will now be in digital format removing the need for printed copies of worksheets and also making it possible for students to save their assessment tasks and upload them via Xuno All of this will help our students keep up with the changing needs of 21st Century education and help prepare them for the many pathways they will face after leaving school Full details of 2016 models and pricing available on our portal will be published soon

The exhibition was thought out and designed magnificently we walked from room to room and each were designed and decorated like the real St Petersburg palace rooms It was a lovely day

lunch in the gardens and a yummy cookie supplied by the gallery In the afternoon we attended an interesting work shop designing brooches much like Catherinersquos idea of collecting cameos for her private collection
