Pupil Free Day The staff had a very productive day on the pupil free day last Thursday. We spent time analysing College data before discussing progress and the way forward. Our next step in this review year is to draft out our self evaluation report before we have the formal review day in October.
College Council The August Meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council took place last Thursday, 20th August. Among the items discussed were the Pathways in Technology (PTech) College and how exciting this new venture is for the students and the College in general. The Council also approved a number of Outdoor Education excursions.
Student Computers As we draw closer to the end of the VCE year I would like to remind all
families of Year 12 students that any school owned computer equipment
MUST be returned to the school before we can exit students.
Many current Year 12 students were issued with a Dell notebook computer
as part of a Federal funding program. The details of equipment are as
follows:
· Dell Inspiron Notebook computer
· Dell Power Adaptor and cord
· Black clamshell hard sided carry case
This equipment needs to be checked and returned to Mr Bath as soon as
possible so that names can be checked off and exits approved. Any student
who still needs to use this computer for school work can still hold onto it for
now as long as Mr Bath is notified and the equipment is brought it for
checking. We will need to add a charge to student accounts for any damaged
or unaccounted for equipment so please start organising this now and let Mr
Bath know if you have any problems.

Girls Go Extreme Year 9 Update
The Girls Go Extreme group participated in this week’s topic which focused on body image and self-esteem. Instead of the girls heading out to challenge themselves physically, this week they were challenged on their idea of ‘what is beautiful”. The girls were shown clips and images that proved the use of photo shopping and image modifying in media that they all access regularly. Girls ideas of what is a realistic body frame where challenged and discussed. The session ended with the girls expressing themselves and having a mock fashion parade and titled ”Love yourself just the way you are”.
We are off to Melbourne next week to complete an orienteering course.

VSCC Cycling Championships - Ballarat
Ballarat delivered another wet and dreary day for the three Newcomb riders this year. The event is a “criterium” race consisting of between 4 to 6 laps of a 2.4km circuit at Victoria Park, depending on their category. Aiden Q raced in the U15 Novice class and although he did not place, did a great job in his first time race experience, pushing himself to the point of feeling sick after the race. He rode really consistently for his 4 laps despite freezing hands and light but unrelenting rain and now knows what it feels like to work at a high intensity. The feature race for us was the U19 Novice section where Zach W and Jacob R rolled up to the line for a first experience of road racing. Mixed in amongst the “racing” class, the pace was full on from the gun. Zach positioned himself perfectly in the main bunch who were 30 seconds behind first and second. Jacob was in the next main group another 20 seconds back.
After a fast first lap, the boys did a really good job of holding their position, the front placing's not managing to pull away any further. Zach could have ridden all day, but hadn’t experienced a sprint finish and cramped 200m from the end. Jacob also just dropped off the pace in the last lap.
Worth noting….. I didn’t see many other recovering spinal patients racing beside Jacob……. Yeee haaaa!
