We owe much to Mr. Henry Ford, who contributed to our country and to our community by establishing the Ford Motor Company and Greenfield Village, to name two major contributions. He stated:“The only true test of values, either of men or of things, is that of their ability to make the world a bet-ter place in which to live.”

There are many other people who have contributed to our country, including James Smithson, a British scientist who in 1826 prepared his last will and testa-ment. Mr. Smithson left his estate to his nephew and to the nephew’s future children. The will also provided that if his nephew died without heirs, “legitimate or ille-gitimate,” as he would in 1835, his estate was to go to the United States “ … to found in Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establish-ment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.” Mr. Smithson died in 1829 at 64 years of age while living in Genoa, Italy. His will was printed in the Times of London, and caught the eye of an Ameri-

can editor who observed the exceptional potential windfall for the United States. The will was also reprinted in the New York American.

The United States Govern-ment was soon notified of this extraordinary bequest. President Andrew Jackson an-nounced the bequest to Con-gress, which accepted the leg-acy bequeathed to the nation. President Jackson pledged the faith of the United States to the charitable trust, July 1,1839. A few months later, the legacy, which amounted to more than 100,000 gold sovereigns, was delivered to the Philadelphia mint and re-coined in U.S. currency. The gift amounted to more than $500,000. For the next eight

years, Congress debated what to do with the estate.

Finally, President James K. Polk signed the legisla-tion on August 10,1846, that established the Smithsonian Institution as a trust to be administered by a Board of Regents and Secretary of the Smithsonian. Since its found-ing more than 165 years ago, the Smithsonian Institution

Important Dates and Items to Remember

“The Grosse Pointe Senior Men's Club changed its By Laws at the meeting held

November 25, 2014 regarding both the Officers and Directors of the Club (for up-dated check signing authority) and also the number of members who can endorse the Candidacy of New Members. Now, One or More members can propose new men for membership. As part of that change, the Board had started a New Member Campaign whereby the first sponsor of a new member will be entitled to a complimentary lunch at the luncheon when the new member is introduced to the members present at the lun-cheon. This program is to run from December 1, 2014 to June 1, 2015.

Profile of the Month: Tom Roberts

2015 Entertainment Books

$35.00

In 1943, Tom was born in Columbus, Ohio, gradu-ating from Upper Arlington HS in 1961. Entering the Navy in 1962, he spent 6 years as a nuclear reactor operator on submarines and on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise, supporting bombing operations in North and South Vietnam.

Upon returning home from the Navy, Tom entered Ohio State University, relying on the GI Bill and various part-time jobs to pay for his education and subsequent bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. During his time at OSU, he met and married the love of his life, Connie Cooks, who was a member of the faculty at OSU.

The computer business was in its infancy, and jobs were plentiful for those with the proper train-ing and skills. After several rewarding jobs, one of which brought Tom and family to Michigan in 1979, he formed his own company - Pointe Systems In-ternational Corporation - to provide computer pro-gramming services to companies around the country. After several years, Tom was lured away from his own company to work for a computer manufacturer, specializing in fault tolerant computers (computers with redundant hardware to prevent crashes). After several years and several mergers, Tom retired from Lucent Technologies, where he had been a service manager for 5 Midwestern states and all of Canada.

Upon retirement, Tom purchased a bicycle and a tennis racquet to compliment his other hobby of SCUBA diving. He joined GPSMC in March of 2001. He served as a Director, Chairman of Memori-als 2010-2012. He is currently the Senior Men's Ten-nis Club Chairman and an avid tennis player. For 10 years he participated in the Michigander bicycle ride, which is a week-long ride across the state. He has also ridden the Erie Canal tow path from Buffalo to Albany, the Katy Trail across Missouri and the trail from Pittsburg to Washington D.C. Tom and Con-nie love to travel and have enjoyed visits to all of the continents, except Antarctica.

Tom and Connie have two sons. Toby, 39 lives in Santa Monica, California. He is an attorney for the California Court of Appeals in Ventura. Christopher, 37 lives in Port-land, Oregon. He works for Target Stores as a Distributor. Neither son is married so Tom and Connie are still waiting to spoil their grandchildren.

Obviously the Tennis Sub Club has a good time off the courts, as noted above in the photos of a couple of their gatherings. On the right in the chef's hat (bottom photo) and centered (top photo) at the Christmas party for the Tennis Group is Tom Roberts prominently displayed. I couldn't find, easily, any of Tom on the courts, though they do exist.

Great drama in the Bowling League, as the first half of the Fall bowling season ended dramatically on December 18 when TomKneeshaw's third place team, behind first place by only two points, put on a charge and captured first place by one point of the rest of the field. Due to some hard luck, and gutter balls, the two leading teams dropped a few notches and a hard charg-ing fourth place team, led by Bill Kuzel and Neal Hampton took second place. They were ably assisted by anchorman Mike Hergenroeder's 675 series.

On a sadder note, we regret to report the loss of one of our long time members, Ray Dresden, who passed away December 13 at the age of 94, as reported in last month's Newsletter. He was a life member of the SMC and a past officer and chairman. He was awarded the Purple Heart for schrapnel wounds re-ceived by artillery fire in World War II. He had been hospitalized for three months and had a long term im-pairment. It is men such as Ray who prove that they were the Greatest Generation. May he rest in peace.

From The SMC Golf League Commit-tee: 2015 Golf Season Starts April 13th with Breakfast A Partial Repeat Story

With the holidays behind us and little to enjoy but the bleak of winter, we start to think spring and a new golf season. With this comes the SMC Golf League annual breakfast and kickoff, scheduled for Monday, April 13, 2015. As in the past, we’ll gather at Golden Hawk Golf Club at 8:00 am. (You can come a little earlier to have some coffee and juice, meet friends, arrange foursomes, or talk about the weather.) The buffet breakfast includes an unlimited supply of scram-bled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes, toast, juice and hot beverage. After introductions and a minimum of boring welcoming speeches during breakfast, at about 9 o’clock, we’ll break for a shotgun start of an 18 hole round of golf, weather permitting. Registration will begin as you arrive at the front entrance. We’ll have a table set up to accept cash payment for the affair. Breakfast is $10; golf (in-cluding cart-everyone must ride) is $22, same as last year. You can select both or either one for cash only. Should you wish to pay your $45 dues for 2015 membership in the League you can pay that to Nick at the top of the stairs (cash or check). Bring your clubs and hope for acceptable golf weather. The Golf Committee asks that you confirm your intention to attend the kickoff by telling one of the Committee members listed below (by phone or e-mail) or at a SMC luncheon meeting, before the kickoff. Important! You do not have to be a mem-ber of the League nor a member of the GP Senior Men’s Club to attend the breakfast, so talk it up with your friends and invite them to the breakfast. New faces will be warmly welcomed. The League has NO limitations on membership. a

Senior Men’s Club Readers One of the smallest SMC sub-club is the Readers, a book club whose members meet monthly to discuss works of fiction, biography, history, science, politics or other subjects. Each month the member who suggested the book leads the discussion and each member has a chance to either praise or pan the selection. After each meeting our reporter writes up the discussion for the Club newsletter. See Page 8 for this month's report and for contact information.

Each year the members meet to vote on the books to be read in the coming year. No meeting is held in July, and for the December meeting, members bring to read some of their favorite poetry selections. The Readers has been in existence for nearly twenty years.

Members enjoy the meetings and frequently find that discussing a book with friends illuminates aspects of the work that they may have overlooked. Readers also find that belonging to the club exposes them to interesting works that they may not have selected on their own. In addition, the deadline of an upcoming meeting may provide some members with the incentive they need to finish a volume that they have put down.

Senior Men’s Club members are always welcome to attend a meeting whether or not they have read the book. Some of the members of The Readers are shown below

Give it a try and you may find a new activity!

Reading List January, The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

The Goldfinch, the third novel from Donna Tartt, tells the story of Theo Decker, who at the age of 13 loses his beloved mother in a bombing at the Met-ropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The small painting she had taken Theo to see was The Goldfinch, painted by the Dutch master Carel Fabritius in 1654. Theo survives the blast and at the urging of a dying elderly man, leaves the museum with The Goldfinch in a shopping bag. This decision will haunt him for the next 14 years. After the father that abandoned him returns with eyes on his wife’s estate, Theo is dragged to Las Vegas and meets Boris, a troubled Ukrainian classmate who pulls Theo into a life of delinquency, including alcohol, drugs and shoplifting, yet becomes a friend for life.

Tartt populates her 784-page novel with a Dick-ensian cast of orphans, bad parents and other flawed but fascinating characters and moves the action from New York to Las Vegas and Amsterdam. On the NY Times bestseller list for months, the novel also received critical acclaim and was awarded the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Award for Fiction. Writing in the NY Times Sunday Book Review, Stephen King said “The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along per-haps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind....Donna Tartt has delivered an extraordinary work of fiction.”

As with her other novels, it took Tartt at least a

decade to write The Goldfinch, and she has filled it with a myriad of subjects, including the art world, Dutch masters, antique restoration and fraud, gambling, drug use and New York society. Her characters struggle with grief, PTSD, unrequited love, loneliness, drug and alco-hol addiction, mental illness and despair but rarely give up hope or the appreciation of beauty. Her descriptions of her characters and the settings they inhabit as well as the paintings, music, films, books and other works of art they encounter are evocative and detailed. If there is an overarching theme to this lengthy novel it may be the importance of art and its appreciation in our lives.

All of the Readers felt that Tartt is a gifted and ac-complished writer and most agreed that The Goldfinch was well worth the effort. Several felt that it should have been edited to a more manageable length and others were disturbed by the numerous scenes of drug use. Some of the plot twists seemed contrived and too coincidental to certain Readers, although others were able to suspend their disbelief given Tartt’s love of Charles Dickens.
