People have asked me, “How’s the Casual Evening Worship Service going?” Well, CEWS seems to be doing quite well. We have had as many as 60 people attending each Sunday at 5:00 P.M. in the Fellow-ship Hall. People seem to like the simple, conversational style of the worship. It is a nice time. We have tried to represent the basic of morning worship (Gathering, Hearing the Word, Responding to the Word, and Bearing the Word into the World) in the evening worship time. I once heard that Presbyterians are good about the Order of their faith, but not so good about the Ardor of the Christian life. I appreci-ate the excitement and energy of the CEWS. CEWS allows us to press the accelerator on the Ardor of our worship. People also ask me about the church’s finances. We’re begin-ning (as of July) to run a slight defi-cit for the year. This was expected,
but still, it’s not the best news. We need your help—keeping your pledge current; and we need to think carefully about the commit-ments we will make for 2010. The Church, it’s staff, and our ministries are too important to leave dimin-ished. I assure you that we are attentive to trying to cut expenses and make the best of what we have been generously given. Our Deacons and Elders are studying some material on “Five Practices of Fruitful Congrega-tions.” It is our hope that we will be able to express some specific priorities for our Church as we get into the Fall Stewardship season. One highlight of the Fall will be an attempted “Every-Member Visitation.” Our officers will be coming to your home on one of two successive Sundays, October 18 or 25. You can clear your calendar now for their visit, if you want. More on this later. As you may know, our fine sanctuary organ has been repaired, refurbished, and improved. The

Celebrating The Thomas N. Moody Organ
Friends,
It is my pleasure to invite you to attend the eighth annual Liturgical Arts Festival: Celebrating The Thomas N. Moody Organ. As I am sure you are aware, we have just completed a major renovation and upgrading of our wonderful organ. It has been decided by our Session to celebrate this occasion by naming the organ in honor of Thomas N. Moody, our organist of more than forty-five years. In keep-ing with this celebration, our 2009 Festival will feature the organ in a series of concerts and recitals. The Festival will open on Sunday afternoon, September 13th at 3:00pm with a concert featuring our Chancel Choir, as well as the choirs of the Presbyterian churches of Hopkins-ville, Franklin and Russellville performing music by Bach, Holst, Franck and others. Tom Moody will be at the organ to perform, and during this concert the organ will be officially dedicated in Tom’s honor. A reception hosted by Circle 9 will follow. This will be a very special occasion in the life of the church family, and you will most certainly want to attend. The Festival will continue at 1:00pm on Monday, September 14 with a showing of the film PULLING OUT ALL THE STOPS: THE PIPE ORGAN IN AMERICA. Tom will be on hand to answer any questions about our organ and to demonstrate at the keyboard. Monday evening at 7:30pm Atlanta-based organist Amir Zaheri will perform music of the English master William Mathias and of Bowling Green composer Michael Kallstrom. A reception hosted by Circle 3 will follow. On Thursday evening, September 17 at 7:30pm, we will host a concert of organ music pre-sented by local organists Shirley Karrick (Franklin Presbyterian Church), Frances Hall (First Christian Church), Kevin Bailey (St. Joseph’s Catholic Church) and Ken Stein (Christ Episco-pal Church). A reception hosted by Circle 4 will follow. The Festival will draw to a close on Saturday evening, September 19 at 7:30pm with a re-cital by New York-based organist F. Anthony Thurman playing music of Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart and others. The recital will be preceded by a “Julia Child” French dinner catered by Blakey and Duffy Hayes. The dinner will take place in Fellowship Hall at 6:15pm. Tickets for the dinner may be arranged by contacting the church office at 843-4707. In the seven years that we have mounted our Liturgical Arts Festivals well over three thou-sand people have attended festival events. As we continue to present this important arts out-reach, I invite each of you to join us for these wonderful musical occasions. All concerts and recitals are free and open to the public. Plan now to attend and to bring friends. I do not be-lieve that you will be disappointed as we continue to celebrate the very best in the sacred arts.
Most Sincerely, David Paul Gibson Director of Music

Youth News
What a great (but short) summer we all had!
Our Wednesday Mission Workdays were successful throughout the summer. We volunteered at various agencies such as Kaleidoscope, the International Center, & our own church. We also helped clean up the cemetery at the Bellewood Center for Children and assisted the city of BG public works department in placing labels on storm drains. The labels encourage people not to dump waste into the drain water. The final project we did was working with some of the boys from Bellewood in cleaning up graffiti under the Veterans Memorial Blvd overpass. A total of over 120 volunteer hours were worked in the months of June & July!
A total of 13 people attended the Montreat Summer Youth Conference. The group consisted of 3 adults, 8 senior highs, and 2 younger children who attended youth clubs. We’ve received many compliments from church members that this year’s Montreat Sunday was the best ever. Let’s keep the fire burning!
We took a total of 13 people to Holiday World on July 29 for a back-to-school trip.
Thanks to the Suhs’ and Rabolds’ for hosting swim parties.
Both the Senior & Junior Highs had meetings to plan events for the coming year.
We helped with parking and children’s games at the Pig Pickin’ on August 30.
Be a part of the fun
Youth Group attendance is back up to 20-25 youth each Sunday evening now that summer vacation is over. Come join us, and bring a friend or two!
As our fall program ramps up, we will continue to assist with the CEWS (Casual Evening Worship Service). Youth Group follows 5:00pm CEWS every Sunday evening. Come join us as we worship together, learn together, eat together, and play together. All Youth from 6th - 12th grade are invited!

Thank you for the sun and the deep blue sky. For the rain and the clouds. Thank you for my family.
Thank you for the many ways you provide for me.
Help me to remember
that all good things come from you, and help me always to be thankful.
Dear Lord,
Help me to be good today. Forgive me for the times I did what I wanted to do,
instead of what you wanted me to do.
Today is a new day, and I can start brand new
because you have forgiven me.
Help me to be a blessing today. Use me to bring happiness to those you love.
Dear Lord, your love
is better than anything else in the world. And you love me.
Help me always to remember that.
Thank you, Jesus! Amen

Gordoneers starting back up
Gordoneers will meet on Friday, September 11, 2009. This will be the first gathering after our summer break. We invite all members of the church to make reservations for dinner. There are no age limits for membership (very loose). Most Gordoneers are fellow members of the Presbyte-rian Church. Some have been members for over 35 years, and others joined last year. We have very good food, fun and fellowship. Come join us. Our fellowship and program committees have a great program scheduled for you!
Women: It’s that time of year again! It’s Circle Time!
September marks the beginning of Circle meetings for the 2009-10 year and we hope that every woman in our church will feel like joining a Cir-cle this year. There are meetings at all times of day and on just about every day of the week. It is a great way to meet other women in the church and be of service at the same time. You can find a listing of all Circles and contact people for each Circle in the Presbyterian Women Directory located in the church office. For returning Circle members, you may pick up your directory in the church office at your convenience. We begin our activities with the Liturgical Arts Festival hosted by our church and several receptions hosted by various Circles. You can find the Circle assignments in the Directory. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nancy Carwell, 781-8143. [email protected]
Parents’ Night Out has a twist this month
The next Parents’ Night Out in September will be at the Kernohans’ house (939 Nutwood Street). This time the youth are going to help. Instead of calling it PNO, we want to call it Kid's Night Out this month. The youth will be helping and are planning different activities to do with the kids.
The specific date is still being finalized. Check the bulletin and 60 second emails for further details. If you have any questions feel free to call Lynne Atkerson.
sound is lovely, rich, and gentle; even as it communicates God’s tremendous power. The organ is being renamed the Thomas N. Moody Organ, in honor of our dear friend. The “official” event is to be associated with the 2009 Liturgical Arts Festival opening, Septem-ber 13th, at both morning services.
As we anticipate the Fall, with its special colors and cooler weather, remember to count your blessings. And know you are loved, Matthew

An Invitation for Knitters & Crocheters
For the past several years a group has convened monthly to knit prayer shawls or lap robes for members or friends of our congrega-tion. We enjoy a time of fellowship in the 10th Street Parlor as we stitch. If you would like to learn more about prayer shawls and/or help us knit or crochet them, you are welcome. (We have donated yarn available!) For those who have other handiwork projects in progress, we would be glad to have you join us as well. Our meetings will begin again on Monday, September 21st at 10 AM in the 10th Street Parlor. Thereafter, we will meet on the second Monday of the month at 10 AM (October 12th; November 9th). We will not meet in December and then resume our usual schedule in January. All are welcome. Questions? Contact Hope Scantlin.

Peacemaking Task Force issues invitation
Join your church family in celebrating World Communion Sunday on October 4,
2009. Once again our congregation will be collecting the Peacemaking Offering
on this day of celebration for Christians around the Globe. The offering goes to
support peacemaking activities at the national, synod, presbytery, and congrega-
tional levels.
On Wednesday, September 30th
please join our peacemaking taskforce in
welcoming International Peacemakers from the Philippines, Rev. Joel
Tendero and mission worker Cobbie Palm, for a dinner and presentation in
the fellowship hall.
What is peacemaking? Peace is a gift from God. The biblical vision of peace
encompasses the justice and well-being that God intends for creation. In a world
wounded by sin, God is at work offering healing, wholeness, and justice. God calls
the followers of Jesus Christ to share the gospel message of peace by seeking to
heal brokenness wherever they encounter it. Justice plays an essential role in
peacemaking. Peace will never be achieved as long as injustice exists. Peace-
makers are called to stand with those who are poor, oppressed, and disadvan-
taged.
What is the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program? A ministry of the General Assembly Council,
the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program engages in a variety of ministries: advocating for social,
environmental, and economic justice; supporting servant leaders; and equipping Presbyterians for
discipleship following Jesus. “Peacemaking: The Believers’ Calling” guides the work of the Peace-
making Program. You can “Google” that title to read the entire document.
The Presbyterian Church’s Peacemaking Task Force brought you a variety of activities in 2009:
February: Peace Seekers reading group
April: Earth Day Prayer Walk at Chuck Crume Park and collaboration with the Episcopal Church in Earth Day Service
July: Gardener’s Exchange
August:: Wednesday Night Programs presenting Marty Deputy’s experiences on Witness for Peace travel seminars to Guatemala and Venezuela
September: Coming soon—International Peacemakers from the Philippines.
Associate Pastor nominating committee reports
In August we have had face-to-face interviews scheduled with four folks. Two of those have removed themselves from consideration, and as of this writing the other two are still being considered. There are other candidates that we have talked with via phone. Please be assured that we are very conscious of our responsibility to find the match that seems God directed. Keep us and the committee’s work in your prayers.

FINALLY -- The Membership Directories Are Here!
Membership Directories will be distributed on three Sundays in September -- the 13th, 20th, and 27th. "Better late than never," and for a while there we thought it might be "never." We will be on the church landing commencing just after the early service each of the three Sun-days.
Members who gave of their time to have their photographs taken at the church, including new members, will receive their copies at no charge. The church is "picking up the tab," since the Directory company went out of business before they could be printed. Other members who wish to have a printed directory can purchase one for $10. A free electronic version will be available to all members soon. We’ll let you know how to access it once it is ready. The new Directory will be in an envelope for insertion into your existing Directory notebook. If you don't have a notebook or if yours is "over the hill," the church will provide one for you. If you cannot pick up your Directory on any of the above dates, after the 27th one can be obtained at the church office. Thank you for your patience. We hope you find the Directory helpful and enjoyable. We, on the other hand, are just thankful it is finally done. John Atkerson & Mary Ann Berry
Jack Keyser’s service to country remembered
On Monday, August 24, 2009, a dedication service was held at the Veterans Memorial Plaza in front of the Warren County Courthouse. Jack Keyser was one of the veterans remembered and honored for service to country. Present for the ceremony were Nancy Keyser, her son Matthew and his wife Chris and their sons, and several friends of the Keyser family. When you are down-town, stop and spend a few quiet moments at this beautiful site and remember those who have served their community and nation.
