Dear Parents and Carers, Our student leadership group have started the year with great enthusiasm and are already displaying maturity and responsibility, juggling their tasks with the start of the new school year and a weekly assembly. Harmony Week Harmony week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and will be celebrated at Eden Hill on Friday, 20th March.

To make this event as successful as possible we are asking for your assistance. We would appreciate any help with the following;

traditional food prepared at home or maybe cooked at school

games that children can join in playing

stories to be told

songs to be sung or music to be played

traditional dances or performances

items representing your culture

help with writing some signs in different languages.

Please speak to your child’s classroom teacher or the office staff to let us know if you are able to help out or come along on the afternoon of the 20th March to share some of your culture. We would love to see as many parents as possible coming along to join in the celebrations.

Please note our canteen will not be open for recess or lunch on

Harmony Day.

Records Up-Date If you are yet to return your child’s Student Up-Date Form, please do so as soon as possible, as it is very important that we have the correct contact information for every student. Hopefully we never need to use it but it is necessary in case of an emergency.

Term 4 2019 Visual Art Raffle During Visual Art classes, students receive raffle tickets for impressive work, attitude and cooperation. Raffle tickets are drawn each week and those students choose a reward from the prize box. At the end of each term, one final ticket is drawn and that student receives a special prize.

Our winner for Term Four of 2019 is Jack Fisher, who received an artist’s visual diary. Congratulations Jack!

Technology Support Role This year I will be working with teachers and students to upskill all of us in using technology. In Term 1 I will be focusing on integrating technology into the Mathematics curriculum. I work alongside the classroom teacher to support them with the technology aspect of the lesson.

I have also been working with teachers to teach them new skills at Techie Breakie, such as how to create a QR code.

Chaplains Chatter The idea of praising children has come under fire in the last five years.

Some studies have suggested there might be problems with praising children. However, we think praise is still useful. Some of the research deterring praise has looked at narrow, laboratory based and artificial environments. Some of it has very small sample sizes. This is not to say it should be dismissed, but we need to be careful about "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" when it comes to praise.

There is also a significant body of earlier research which tells us that praise - when used carefully - is a way to help children feel good, to increase the chance of children doing helpful actions, and helping them start to notice their strengths. Praising children also (and this is important) improves adult's positive feelings about a child, and also helps adult-child relationships. In sum, praise is still useful. However, it is important to use praise carefully. Here are a few ideas about how and when to give praise.

Simply enthusiastically noticing and commenting on the positives can be a helpful way of "praising" children. For example, we might say enthusiastically - "Wow, I notice you did....." or appreciatively saying "Thanks so much for doing...." rather than "you are brilliant at..."

Even better, we can notice/appreciate and comment on specific actions a child does - not the result or outcome of these actions. For example, saying "You really kept your eyes on the finishing line the whole time" or "You put in so much detail in that picture" (actions) rather than "you won the race!" or "This is an incredible drawing" (outcomes)

Mentioning the benefits of a praised behaviour to a child can help them continue doing it, i.e. saying "You look at the ball every time it comes towards you, this means you almost always catch it", or "You helped your friend out, I'm sure they had a great time with you and will want to play again” (see the benefits are in italics here)

Running Club Our ‘Running Club’ is on again for 2020. Come on down to the big school oval in the morning to walk or run laps, it’s a great way to start the day. Everyone is welcome - students, parents and staff, to join Mr Pedrotti from 8.00-8.30am, Monday to Thursday. Get a faction point for every lap you do and earn certificates and badges when you reach milestones. We also have special certificates for Kindy and Pre-Primary students this year.

20c Tuesday 20c Tuesday is off to a great start. We have raised a total of $200 so far to put towards the Year 6 Camp. Thank you to all those who have shown our Year 6 students support.

Keep those 20c coins coming.

Bullying This is the next article in our series on Bullying. Please take the time to read this article and our Bullying Pamphlet, which is available to view on our website under policies or by opening this link:

Bullying Pamphlet

What can I do if I think my children are being bullied at school?

Try to talk with your children about what is going on

Listen to their concerns and believe them

Be aware of your own response and react in a calm and helpful manner

Talk with your children’s teachers and calmly discuss the situation and some possible strategies

Encourage your children to ask for help at school if they are being bullied e.g. talk about who they could talk to at school, and how to ask for help.
