IT NEWS

Our School Reports are Going Digital From the end of Semester 1, 2015 all student reports will be uploaded to the Parent and Student Portal of Xuno and will no longer be mailed out to home addresses. These reports will be in .PDF format which will allow them to be downloaded, saved and printed from anywhere you have Internet access.

This means students will be able to save and include a copy of their reports in job applications or add them as an attachment in their personal résumé. Past reports will also be available online for as long as a student attends the College.

It is expected that this method will make distribution more efficient as a change of mailing address will not affect collection and we will not need to reissue lost or damaged reports.

Students needing more than one report per family will also be able to print or email as many copies as needed. There will also be a considerable cost and time saving for the College over the year.

How to Access Student Reports via Xuno Finding your reports is easy. All reports are stored in the Assessments and Reports section of Xuno. To access them from your home go to www.newcombsc.vic.edu.au and click on the button at the bottom of the screen then enter your secure Username and Password. Both Parent and Student log on codes will be able to access the reports pages. Once Xuno opens you can see the Assessment & Reports link on the left of the screen. Find the report you want and click (click to download). You can then view save and print the reports as you like.

What if I can’t get access at home? If you do not have Internet or can’t work out how to save or print the reports don’t worry. Students will be able to open and print them at school or you can contact the school to arrange a copy to be printed for you. The important thing is that all families do make sure to obtain a copy of student reports and sit down to read these together with students.

IDAHO Day

As part of being a supportive school and sharing the values of inclusion, equity and respect, we celebrated International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) on Monday, 15th June. The Stand Out Group organised a Colour Fun Run, which many students participated in. Here are a few photos from the day.

Final Instalment of our Indonesian Adventure

During our final week in Indonesia, we were farewelled from SMANSA with a friendly party on Monday night. They presented us with a gift of a coffee mug with our own faces on it, a nice touch. Afterwards the students enjoyed themselves at Karaoke at the Mataram Mall. On Tuesday we were ready bright and early at Praya airport to depart Lombok. It was very sad to farewell our friends. Getting ushered into the Garuda VIP lounge to enjoy some free morning tea cheered us up a bit. Once we were settled at Ari Putri hotel in Sanur the students went out to practice their Indonesian bargaining skills and got some very good prices. On Wednesday we had fun visiting Bali Marine and Safari park. One highlight was watching the elephant conservation show, demonstrating the conflict between the elephants and local villages.

On Thursday we had a massive day starting with the Bali Baik Bike downhill bike ride through the foothills of Gunung Kintamani. There were adorable puppies for sale! But we couldn't buy one. The ride went for 24 kilometers and we were pretty hot at the end. We went back to the village for a nine course Balinese lunch, then played cards and strolled up the street to Paon cooking school. Ibu Puspa was lots of fun and we made around 8 different Balinese dishes and ate an enormous dinner! James from Surfcoast ate 40 satay sticks that day! The final day, Friday, at Waterbomb park was fantastic and we hopped onto our flight home at 11pm. We were exhausted and very pleased that the Northbound Lombok exchange went smoothly. The friendships made at SMANSA will never be forgotten and the students got to see some of the most beautiful places in Lombok and Bali. It was great to share the trip with David and Mary, Hannah's parents. They were blown away by how much we did over a fortnight. Expressions of interest for future Northbound Lombok exchanges can be directed to Bu Millis or Pak Karl. Also, if your family has a spare bedroom, the Southbound exchange (where students from SMANSA visit us) is happening again this August/September. A great change to make friends from overseas.

2015 Cross Country

The College Cross Country was held on Monday, 18th May on a beautiful sunny afternoon. The conditions were made for some good running to be followed by an enjoyable sausage sizzle held overlooking Eastern Beach. While compulsory for Years 7 and 8 it was an optional day for the other year levels and it was great to see each of these represented on the afternoon. All students participated well and the age group winners were: 12-13Yr Girls – Jayda M 12-13Yr Boys – William H 14Yr Girls – Zoe B 14Yr Boys – Jack T 15Yr Girls – Emily T 15Yr Boys – Harrison T 16Yr Girls – Shania R 16Yr Boys – Brandon C 17Yr Girls – Ebony C 17Yr Boys – Daniel B 18-20Yr Boys – Mason W The results at the end of the day were close with Wills running first. Well done to all involved. OVERALL RESULTS

Drysdale Curlewis Harrison Wills

There were also some helpers on the day who were unable to run and I would like to thank all of these students who helped on the afternoon to allow the event to run so smoothly.

Interschool Cross Country

Following the College Cross Country event a number of our students were chosen to represent the school in the Geelong event. This was also held at Eastern Park and again perfect conditions. Everyone represented the College with pride and competed well. There were three stand out performances with Jack coming 7th in the 14 year boys, Harrison 18th in the 15 year boys and Shania 6th in the 16 year girls. These three students have qualified for the next level which was held on Thursday, 11th June.

Boys Netball On Tuesday, 2nd June the intermediate and junior boys netball teams ventured to Life Be In It Netball Centre for a day full of competition. Eager to learn a sport that was somewhat new to them all the players improved a lot as the day went on. The inter boys team was exceptionally coached by student helpers Gemma, Jess and Annie. They performed well winning and losing some matches but all fought out in terrific competitive spirit. The junior boys had a very successful day. Helped by their ability to learn and adjust as the games wore on. Hard work from all players saw the height and athleticism of Jack able to dominate in the goal circle shooting many goals and including some swish tactics on throw ins to dominate his opponents. Seth worked hard in defense and was backed up with Mark who despite sometimes giving away height as a disadvantage was able to dominate his opponent with reflexes and an amazing jump. All players contributed throughout the day and the team consisting of the previously mentioned and Jonty, Curtis, Jonah, Matt, Nathan and Michael; made light work of the games allowing them through to end the day in a Grand Final. Unfortunately the game did not fall their way in the final despite a competitive effort they ran out runners up to Surf Coast Secondary College. Great effort though boys and look forward to another go at it next year. Also a big thank you to the student coaches of this team Jane, Zoe and Crystal.

Year 8 Girls Netball Earlier this term the Year 8 girls team also went to the Life Be In It Centre and represented the College well in that competition.

CYBERIA Performance On Thursday, 4th June students watched a Brainstorm Production of “CYBERIA”. The play addressed cyber bullying in schools and aims to improve student mental health and wellbeing. In the play Ruby loses her moral compass on blogs, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and MSN. She is instantly banished to "Cyberia". Tim is in self-imposed exile playing online games. When they indulge in cyber bullying and anti-social behaviour it creates havoc in the real world. They suddenly realise they can't just press the "undo" button to retrieve their relationships, reputation, dignity and most of all their privacy. This play poses questions about how the digital age is affecting our brains, our humanity and our future. Students were very attentive and entertained, some of their feedback was; “It made me think about how I use the internet and all the bad

things that can happen” Year 7 student “I liked the play it was a good day at school” Year 7 student “I was sad for Ruby cos I know that she didn’t mean the stuff

that happened” Year 8 student “I liked it “ Year 7 student On Thursday, 18th June students in Year 7 and 8 will participate in a workshop facilitated by BullyZero that will focus on Cyber safety, Bullying and Cyber Bullying.
