Principal’s Pen Leadership Leadership has been defined as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. I would like to take a moment to pull this definition apart. At Cornerstone, we believe that part of our mission is to develop leaders, and further to this, that every student in our school has the potential to be one. The word leader can bring to mind the strong up-front types, who are seen and applauded. They are like King David. Rulers, known for their charisma, power and ability. They are strong and obvious in their ability to take people with them. David’s story within the scriptures shows him to be a man who not only reflected the heart of God, but who, despite his flaws, was used to transform a nation. But not all leaders are so clearly seen. There are many leaders who are far less obvious, but their ability to transform the world around them, and to influence others to accomplish a task is no less impressive. If we look at the least known disciple, Andrew, we see a man who is spoken of very little. He didn’t give profound speeches, or make public proclamations. Instead, he quietly and gently went on his way, inviting his brother to join him and meet with Jesus. From this act, the most renowned disciple, Peter, accepted Jesus as his saviour and came to be considered the most influential of them all. However, without Andrew’s invitation, the rest would not be part of history. This act was typical of much of what Andrew did. He lead and he enlisted the support of others to accomplish a task - but he did it without needing the fan-fare often considered part of what makes a leader. This is a lesson we today would do well to learn. Scripture cautions against seeking roles of prominence….Jesus taught the disciples, ‘If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all’ (Mark 9:35). It takes a special kind of person to be a leader with a servant’s heart. Andrew was like that. Every one of us has the potential to lead, and that includes each of our students. By discovering their unique God given potential, along with a belief that they can truly make a difference, and humbly allowing God to work through them, they will see leadership in its most pure form birthed. Leadership has been defined as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”.

That’s what our hope is here at Cornerstone.

Book Character Dress Up Day - PrimaryThe Primary School will be having a Book Character Dress-up Day on Friday September 19th, to raise funds for more class reading books. The students who would like to participate will need to come to school dressed up as their character, be able to name their character, name the book it comes from and the author. They will also need to donate a gold coin.A letter is being sent home to parents outlining the rules of participation. Please ensure you read this carefully.Any student not dressing up in character will need to wear their normal school uniform on this occasion.

Primary Music AfternoonOn September 5th, the Primary school (Year 3-6) will host a French themed Musical afternoon to showcase the skills of students. We encourage parents to attend and will provide an afternoon tea at the conclusion of the concert. It will be held at 2:00pm in the Auditorium.

School Photo DayIt’s almost time to book the kids a haircut and polish their shoes.......School Photo Day is almost here! This year, due to the growth of the College, photo day will be across two days. The Primary School photos will be taken on Tuesday September 9, and the Secondary School photos will be take on Wednesday September 10. Envelopes for your children’s orders will be sent home shortly, and need to be returned on photo day and delivered to the photographer.

This year, they will be held in the school Sports Centre, NOT the auditorium, so please be aware of this change.Any families who wish to have a family photo taken, need to be aware that these are scheduled for Tuesday September 9th at 8:30am.All students will need to be in their full winter uniform for their class photo, so please help us by making sure they are dressed appropriately on the day.

Free Dress Fund raisingWell done to students on their recent ‘Free Dress’ Fund-raisers. With the aim of supporting our sponsor children and the Compassion organisation, a good sum of money was raised. The High school raised $302 and the Primary school raised $363. Great work to everyone involved!

Litter Return SchemeCommencing Wednesday August 27th, the Secondary school will be engaging in a new program that will attempt to make littering of canteen purchased wrappings a thing of the past. The plan is this: Students who purchase items from the canteen, and who return their packaging after consumption, will receive a five cent refund. For some this may not be considered a worthwhile activity, but for the enterprising, who can

collect from their peers or around the College grounds, the activity will pay dividends. All items in the canteen will increase in cost by 5 cents, and in order to redeem the 5 cents, the packaging must be seen to be returned to bins at the canteen, and must be the complete packaging for an item, not just part. For instance, if a student has a hamburger, the bag and the Styrofoam container must be brought back. If it is an ice-cream, the wrapper and the stick must be returned. This only applies to secondary students. Our intent is not to reduce the ownership of students to correctly deal with their own litter, but to provide an incentive for the collection of all refuse. A great in-cent-ive that makes cents! (we couldn’t resist saying that!)

CanteenThe canteen is desperately in need of assistance. Volunteers parents are what makes the canteen system work, and unfortunately, the numbers of helpers have been dwindling in recent months. There have been occasions that Senior staff have been required to make lunches. Whilst we have leaders with a servant heart, it is not the best way to utilse their skills and so we are asking for anyone, who even on odd occasions may be able to help, to come forward. Please leave your name with the ladies at the front office if you can assist. Thanks in anticipation.

Child Care at Cornerstone?

The College is researching the possibility of offering child-care to parents in the form of Before/After-School Care & Long Day/Vacation Care. Over the years many parents have queried whether we would consider offering this service and our busy lives have made it essential for some.

We’re very early in the planning stage and we’re keen to find out whether parents would actively utilise this facility. With this in mind, we have created a short online survey for you to complete …when life at home isn’t so hectic.

You can type the following link into your internet browser: bit.ly/1qeeeen

OR use your smart phone or tablet to access this QR Code The information we require is only indicative at present and there is no requirement for you to commit. So, if you want to see these services at Cornerstone please take the few minutes to complete the survey or pass on the links to a friend who may be interested.

Jane Austen EveningStepping back in time, the Senior English students spent the evening in character at the annual Jane Austen night. A great parade of costumes, candlelit dinner, poetic readings and austere manners made

for a wonderfully entertaining yet educational night. Special thanks to Admiral Douglas, Mrs Douglas, Rev Heyes, Mrs Haagensen and Mr van der Tang for acting as chaperones for the young ladies and gentlemen participants.

Prior Notification of AbsenceWould parents please note the necessity of advising the school of upcoming absences. As part of our requirement for registration, it is necessary for us to be aware of the reasons for students not attending school. Further to this, please also be aware that taking students out of school for the purposes of family holidays is not an acceptable reason for absence. This is not simply a policy of the school, but is a matter that is determined by the government - and such decisions by families can affect the school’s funding allocation. Please take your holidays during the school holidays. If your children are sick, please also ensure that you contact the office before 9am.Thanks for your help.

Primary AssemblyOur Primary staff just keep them coming! The next Parent Assembly is this Thursday at 2:00pm in the Auditorium. It is being hosted by Mrs Sully’s Year 1 class. Be there to see them in action. All parents are welcome to attend.

Waratah WorriesTraffic management in Waratah Court is still an ongoing issue, and we are continuing to be in communication with the City Rangers, police and neighbours regarding these concerns. We have endeavoured to communicate our concerns as politely as possible, but it appears that some parents believe that they are exempt from complying. Please note that the following activities will NOT be tolerated any more, and fines will be issued from the City to those who are unable to comply. Please DO NOT park in the driveways of residents, or block the driveways of residents. Please DO NOT park or stand your car in the street. If your child is not ready to be collected, please keep moving and return to the back of the line. Please DO NOT park on the footpath or in any area that is not a marked parking space. We look forward to this matter being resolved.Thank you. Bruce Douglas, Principal.

Athletics CarnivalsLast Friday, the Primary (Year 3-6) students travelled to Bunbury to participate in their annual athletics carnival. We must make mention of the great coordination by Mr Murphy, and the support provided by staff and a remarkable sea of parent helpers. We are incredibly blessed at Cornerstone to have such an amazing group of people within our parent community and we really do value each contribution made. The Secondary students head to the Athletics arena this Friday. We pray they too will have a blessed day.

PEDAL PRIXcongratulations to Mr Taylor and his team of students in their debut entry into the pedal prix.we can advise that they obtained the highest place position for local school entrants, and placed up high in the rankings.with such a great result, inspiration has been drawn towards next year’s entry.well done to everyone who was involved. A great outcome.
