Every Day/Minute Counts
Going to school every day is thesingle most important part of yourchild’s education. Students learnnew things at school every day –
missing school puts them behind.
Why it’s important
We all want our students to get agreat education, and the building blocks for a great education beginwith students coming to school each
and every day.
If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning thefundamental skills that will set themup for success in the later years of
school.
There is no safe number of days formissing school – each day a studentmisses puts them behind, and can
affect their educational outcomes.
Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in
numeracy, writing and reading.
Getting in early
Attendance patterns are establishedearly – a child regularly missingdays in kindergarten or in the earlyyears of school will often continueto miss classes in the later years, andreceive lower test scores than theirclassmates. It’s vital that students goto school every day – even in the
early years of primary school.
What we can do
The main reasons for absence are:
Sickness – There are always timeswhen students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital
that they’re only away on the days
they are genuinely sick, andsetting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercisingregularly can make a big
difference.
It's vital that holidays are planned during schoolholidays where possible, andnot during the term if it can be
avoided.
“Day off” – Think twice
before letting your child havea “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates –
every day counts.
Truancy – This is whenstudents choose not to go toschool without their parent’s permission. There can bemany reasons for truancy. The best way to address this is forschools and parents to work
together.
If for any reason your childmust miss school, there arethings you can do with your school to
ensure they don’t fall behind:
Speak with your classroom teacherand find out what work your child
needs to do to keep up.
Develop an absence learning planwith your teacher and ensure your
child completes the plan.
Remember, every day counts. If yourchild must miss school, speak withyour classroom teacher as early as
possible.
Openly communicating with yourchild's school about all absences is agood way to prevent attendanceissues being escalated to a SchoolAttendance Officer. A SchoolAttendance Officer is a Department ofEducation and Early Childhood
Development Regional Director whohas authority to follow up attendanceissues. Attendance issues that areescalated can lead to an Infringement
Notice.
If you’re having attendance issueswith your child, please let yourclassroom teacher know so we canwork together to get your child to
school every day.

resources to help address

Royal Life Saving report

Artist of the Month
Page 5
The artistic talent and creativityof our students never ceases toamaze and thrill me! TheGrade 3/4 students haverecently been exploring andextending their clay modellingskills. They have created someabsolutely fabulous models inwhich they should all be very
proud.
Firstly the challenge was tocarefully model the shape of achosen animal from clay, thencreate all the small detailedfeatures relevant to that animal.
We used different techniques andequipment to achieve differenttextures and we found some ofthe small fiddly features likewhiskers, teeth and fangs anexercise in patience and
perseverance!
All the hard work paid off whenwe carefully painted the modelsand we found they started to
come alive. We enjoyed mixingour own colours to create theexact shades we needed toachieve the effects we wanted. Itwas so exciting to see so many
brilliant models from the grade3/4 students, and I hope theywill become treasured works ofart from the Primary school
years.
In particular, Artist of the Monthgoes to 4 amazingly detailedmodels which show skill evenmost adults would be proud of!Congratulations to: Blake S 3/4F
for his walrus, Trak B 3/4M forhis toucan, Alyssa H 3/4N forher raccoon and Jaimie D 3/4S
for her owl.
