FROM Mr Paul Jeffreys, Principal... SOMETHING TO SHARE AND READ WITH YOUR CHILDREN Currently sitting outside my office is a framed football jumper. Given we had a ‘Football Day’ this last week, it seemed appropriate to bring it in for the children to have a look. The jumper is a special edition worn by players of the Geelong Football Club a few years back, celebrating 150 years and it contained the name of every person to have played a game for that team. I received it from the SRC students of my last school. Listening to the children talk about it outside my office, it got me thinking. I wrote a short story some time ago that strangely connects to the football jumper sitting outside my office, of which some of our students seemed so impressed.

The Birdman Two significant things happened in 1966. Decimal currency was introduced and every child in my Grade 3 class was very excited by the event. Later that very same year, an even more memorable event occurred; at least in my mind. In the small country town of Casterton in the Western District of Victoria, a young teacher had organized the only excursion I can recall in all of my primary school years. On the edge of the township, there was a small wetland predominantly vegetated by tea-tree thicket. We met as a class, very early in the morning at the outer edge of this scene not knowing what was about to befall us. A man was waiting to lead us all through what seemed a hedge maze until we came to a clearing. We were confronted by bright green native grasses and sedges covering the clearing against a backdrop of the darker green tea-tree, interspersed with the odd paper bark and backgrounded further by eucalypts. What was out of place however were the lines of mist nets set up at different points around this open space. In those nets were numerous birds that had unsuspectingly made dashes across the open expanse for all the reasons that birds do. Into the spider web thin nets they had collided and consequently dropped softly into the pockets at the bottom of the nets. Yellow and red robins, silver eyes and wrens, fantails and thornbills all fell victim to the almost invisible traps. And one by one, carefully, the man disentangled each beautiful creature. I had not ever seen them up so close before. Tiny delicate birds held by huge gentle hands had metal identification bands even more gently clamped onto tinier legs. And then they were released to go about their early morning business. At that very moment in time, surrounded by the untouched beauty of that small wetland environment, I wanted more than anything in the world, to be a birdman. It never happened.

******* While this experience had an impact on me; so much so that I can still vividly remember it, I had other plans. Simply, I wanted to be the best football player. Not good, but the best. It set in place a long period of years of wanting and then eventually needing to be the best footballer. The best in the class, the best in the school, the best in the junior league, the best in selection trials. It goes on. I regret that desire that took up so much of my youth and early adulthood. I have continued to send the message to our students at Dunkeld Consolidated School: You don’t have to be the best at anything. Rather, your task is to get better at everything.

For me the football thing was, wrongly at the time, about trying to be the best. It is such a burden to put on oneself. What got me thinking was the connection between my story (a true one) and how I got to be given the jumper: About 12 years ago, for a number of reasons, I put in a proposal at my old school for a fully integrated whole year environmental program which subsequently went ahead. It turned out to be successful and continues to this day. The seed for that program, among others was my ‘birdman’ experience as I thought students at this particular school had lost their connection with nature. The reason I was given the framed jumper was simply a gesture of appreciation for the work that went into the environmental program. It is incredibly, a connection which took 40 years to unfold. For me, my few enjoyable days with the Year 2/3 students at camp last week in a beautiful natural environment stirred the seeds of my thinking. I noticed with some activities the children experienced, winning and being the best was a common theme. You don’t have to be the best at anything. Rather your task is to get better at everything. And I think this is where self-

fulfilment lies.

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH AWARD The August Aussie of the Month Award was Year 4/5/6 student, Isaac Hanson, for exhibiting the following qualities:

For his active and committed participation in all school activities this year including the Performing Arts and for being a positive role model to our younger students.

Isaac was presented with his badge and certificate by Mrs Louise Patterson, President and Mrs Katie Adams,

Secretary of the Dunkeld and District CWA Branch.

BUS TRAVELLERS Thank you to parents for their support in speaking to their children about behaviour expectations on buses. We have seen improvements in recent weeks. I urge parents to continue the conversation at home as the positive changes can quickly fall away. For their safety, we need children to remain in their seats, maintain an acceptable noise level and show respect for others, particularly the requests of the driver. We continue to encourage children to take a book, electronic game or other passive activity to occupy them on their journey.

FOOTY DAY Thank you to our teachers for their work in organising and carrying out the activities for our ‘Footy Day’ this last week. Kicking competitions, handball competitions, art activities, maths activities, tabloid sports, football clinics and football games all featured under the theme of football. Just how do you have an art activity or a maths activity under the banner theme of ‘football’. You need to ask your child about that (well done clever teachers). Thank you especially to Simon Cullinane, Stephen Field and Adam Kent for taking the children for football clinics and games.

Our sincere appreciation also goes to Dunkeld Lions Club members: Phil Della-Vedova, Peter Hinchey, Ian Macgugan and Zeb Hinchey for cooking a barbecue for all children and staff in the school. It was pleasing to hear from these four gentlemen that they were impressed with the amount of “thank you’s” they received as children were given their sausages.

MRS GERRING – YEAR 2/3 CLASS We would like to inform parents that Mrs Dee-Anne Gerring will be taking part of her long service leave at the beginning of Term 4. She will be away for the first two weeks of term. Alison Prentice will be taking the Year 2/3 class for that period of time. Best wishes to Mrs Gerring for her well-deserved holiday in Fiji.

KINDER TO PREP TRANSITION PROGRAM Children from Year 4 and 5 visited the Dunkeld Kindergarten on Wednesday of this week as part of our transition process for next year’s Prep class. Our students took with them a picture book to share with a buddy before sitting down for a snack and an outside play. Our Year 4/5 students were outstanding in their demeanour with the Kinder children. Understanding, empathy and patience, well done.

SCHOOL HATS School hats have been ordered as the school is currently out of stock. For this week and next week (until the end of Term 3) if students do not have a NAVY wide-brimmed or bucket hat an alternative hat of a similar design will be accepted. No caps allowed. If students do not have a hat they will have to sit in the undercover walkway during playtime at morning tea and lunch time.

SAKG YEAR 4/5/6 EXCURSION A reminder that the Year 4/5/6 students will travel by bus to participate in a Bush Tucker walk and tasting session at Brambuk, Halls Gap on Thursday 19 September. The bus will depart from school at 11.00am and arrive back at 3.00pm. Cost $2.00 for lunch. There will be no Kitchen or Garden classes held at school on 19 September.

NAPLAN STUDENT REPORTS The delivery of NAPLAN student reports has been delayed. It is expected that delivery of reporting packages to Victorian schools will now take place in early Term 4.

YEAR 2/3 CAMP The Year 2/3 students from the Dunkeld Consolidated School had their three-day camp at Grampians Retreat, Dunkeld from Wednesday 4 – Friday 6

September. They participated in a

variety of activities throughout the camp, including a four way tug-of-war, hut building, low ropes course, frisbee golf, photo trail, scavenger hunt, night reflector trail, a camp fire and more. The crowd favourite was the 100 metre long flying fox, which was very fun! There was much excitement throughout the whole camp. Camp owners, Dennis and Maree Willey, were fantastic and made sure the camp was an enjoyable experience for all children. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful camp with so many activities on offer, so close to home! Many thanks to Mr Jeffreys for his first camp with us at Dunkeld, to Mrs Karen Kent for volunteering her time for the three days and to Mr Mike Hanson for coming up on Friday to take over from Mr Jeffreys who had to attend a Principals meeting in Ballarat. The extra help was greatly appreciated!

YEAR 4/5/6 CAMP Last week the Year 4/5/6 students from the Dunkeld Consolidated School participated in the Bendigo, Echuca and Swan Hill Camp. As part of a three year rotation, the School Camps program enables students to have three completely different experiences over their last three years at school.

Prior to this the children have had the experience of an overnight sleep at school (Prep and Year One), a two night stay at the Grampians Retreat at Dunkeld and the Norval Camp at Halls Gap, and then the three nights camps at Melbourne (city), Anglesea (coastal) and Echuca (rural). Experiences at our camp this year included a tour of the Central Deborah Gold Mine and the Golden Dragon Chinese Museum in Bendigo. In Echuca we enjoyed a swim at the indoor pool, cruise on the Murray River on PS Pevensey paddle steamer and the Port of Echuca Tour. We were entertained by the Dancing Emus and Sharp’s Magic Movie House. We also visited the Holden Museum and the Military Museum at Moama Chanter Estate. After a further journey to Swan Hill we stepped back into the early history of the Mallee at the Pioneer Settlement. For our last night in Echuca we all enjoyed ten pin bowling. The students were well looked after by our host Ray at our motel and Peter our very obliging bus driver. All staff and students would like to sincerely thank the support given to the Dunkeld Consolidated School Camps Program by the School Council and school community, whose hard work each year raises funds to attain the budgeted subsidy of the camps program.

On Footy Day I dressed as a Bulldogs supporter. My favourite thing was with Mrs Gerring because I got to the top of the ladder. I was with Archie and our name was Koalas and we got 143 in the Grand Final and we won!

With Mrs Higgins and Mrs Gilbert we made a footy ground. We played a footy match and my team just won. I liked Footy Day. By Will Kent, Year 2/3.

YES! It’s Footy Day at last and today I get to wear my Dad’s hat. I go for Sydney Swans. We do activities like making a footy stadium, playing dice footy, tabloid sports and a game of footy. My team won the game of footy. It was fun! By Julia Kelly, Year 2/3.

GRADE PREP AND 1 CONCERT A note has been sent home with costume requirements for the plays for each grade. If parents have any queries please let me know. It would be really appreciated if parents could help their children memorise their lines for the plays. All Prep/One students will need to bring their costumes/clothes in a named bag on the morning of the 19

September for a dress rehearsal. The students will take

their costumes home that afternoon to wear back to school dressed and ready to go onto the stage at night. The concert will start at 7.00pm and will only be about an hour’s duration. The Grade 2-6’s will watch the concert on the Thursday morning at a dress rehearsal so do not necessarily need to come to the evening performance. We ask that all pre-schoolers and siblings not involved in the concert sit with their parents, as the performers will be sitting on the floor at the front during items and they do not need to be distracted by younger children.

The Kindergarten students are not performing at this concert but will take part in a Special Assembly later in the year. We look forward to seeing all Prep/Year 1 families on Thursday 19

September at 7.00pm.

If any grandparents, adults or community members are unable to make it on the night they are very welcome to attend the dress rehearsal on Thursday 19 September at 9.30am, which should only take about 30-45 minutes.

GRADE 2 – 6 CONCERT The Grade 2 – 6 students will perform their concert on Thursday 17 October at the school hall at 7.00pm. Costume lists will be printed in issue number 17 (first newsletter of Term 4). Could parents please help their children learn their lines/parts for the plays they are performing, especially some of the Grade 4/5/6 student who have characters with quite involved parts. Many thanks, Heather Macgugan (5577 2277)

From the Kitchen Garden…

The Age ‘Good Food Guide’ Awards were held recently and the Innovation Award for 2013 was awarded to Stephanie Alexander and the Kitchen Garden Foundation. Stephanie and the Foundation were awarded this for bringing food education to thousands of children through the Kitchen Garden Program. “The fundamental philosophy that underpins the SAKG Program is that by setting good examples and engaging children’s curiosity, as well as their energy and their tastebuds, we can provide positive and memorable food experiences that will form the basis of positive lifelong eating habits.” (SAKG website). To Stephanie Alexander and the SAKG Team – congratulations!

Thursday 5 September we welcomed many new faces into the Kitchen. Prep students and many parents/grandparents/family friends prepared and shared morning tea together. The kitchen was filled with excitement

as groups of children prepared and cooked Pumpkin Scones, Old Fashioned Lemonade, Raspberry Muffins and Fruit Kebabs. Outdoors through our glass doors the kitchen tables were set with vases of fresh flowers and adults and children shared morning tea

together. Grade 1 students with their ‘special guest’ prepared and shared lunch together. Pizza bases with parsley and cheese were mixed and kneaded and rolled. Fresh tomato pizza base sauce was spread and toppings including roast pumpkin and

capsicum with more cheese sprinkled on top were baked in the oven. Raspberry muffins, fruit kebabs and lemonade were also enjoyed after our pizza. The tables were set with our red tablecloths and vases of flowers. Children sat together and shared lunch. I thank the families that were able to attend and I welcome all families to visit anytime on a Thursday if you have any questions or recipes to share. It was a wonderful introduction to these families into the SAKG Program held at their school. Thursday 12 September, Grade 5/6 students prepare and share together. Lisa McIntyre informs me that we have an abundance of broccoli so we will prepare that into a delicious meal with the addition of Mr Rob Smith’s leeks. We will also be preparing lunch for the Brambuk excursion to be held on Thursday 19 September for Grade 4/5/6 students where we will sample and learn of ‘Bush tucker’. We will be having lunch at the Halls Gap Park. In Kitchen Class this Thursday we will be making ‘Herby Hamburgers’ and will freeze some for next week’s excursion. We will also make our own BBQ Sauce as an accompaniment. Menu this week: Broccoli and Leek Soup with Croutons, Herby Hamburgers, Homemade BBQ Sauce, and Tabouli Salad all together in a bread roll. Raffle: Winner of the SAKG raffle painting of ‘The Old Farm’

is Michelle Hommelhoff from Mount Gambier. A big Thank you to Pauline Yule and Paul Sanders at The Old Bakery & Wild Plum Cafe for all the support you give to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program at the Dunkeld Consolidated School. Our raffle has helped make funds for equipment purchases in the kitchen this term. I would like to thank my sister, Maryann Jenkins, for her kind donation of another lovely painting. Thank you to all who purchased raffle tickets from far and wide. A total of $408.00 was raised. A roster for friends of the kitchen is attached to this newsletter for the rest of the year. I thank those who have put their hand up to become a Friend of the Kitchen garden, we would not be able to run the program without your support and help on the day of classes. If you are unable to attend on any given day or if you wish to come and help in the kitchen on any given Thursday please call Gaylene on 5577 2384 at the front office. Happy ‘preparing and sharing’ now and during the school holidays. Clare Kennedy, SAKG Kitchen Specialist

I hope all the families enjoyed the present that the students brought home in time for Father’s Day last week. The mint plant that they brought home, was one that they had grown from a division of a larger plant, earlier this term. In fact, from two medium sized pots of mint, the children divided and grew 109 small pots of mint! Division is a great way to grow new plants, for no cost, except that of the potting mix. We used recycled pots, with newspaper and baling twine to wrap them up. It is a great way to produce lovely presents for family and friends.

Our senior students have now interviewed two well-known local farmers – Wally Allen and Iven Field. The students are learning what happens in the local world, beyond their town boundary. They asked some great questions and learnt a lot about sheep and cattle farming, as well as local history. Next term, Luke Balkin will be interviewed about his life on a cropping farm; we are looking forward to meeting Luke and hearing his stories.

These last few weeks we have been planting cabbages, cauliflowers, silver beet, leeks and lettuce, and transplanting seedlings. We’ve also sown more carrot seeds in our telephone book pots. Weeding is also a continual task that needs to be done! We have been observing the bees peacefully gathering nectar and pollinating our flowers, firstly the almonds, then the peaches, and now nectarines, and the golden canola. Next week, the Grade 4/5/6 students will travel to the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, “Brambuk” in Halls Gap, to tour the Bush Tucker garden there, and sample some of its’ produce. We hope to gather some ideas to bring back and use in our garden. Next term the SAKG Program will hold a stall at the Discover Dunkeld Market. We will use this opportunity to inform the general public of the school and the program, and we’ll have posters and photos and drawings made by the children, to decorate the stall. We’ll also be selling some produce from the garden, to help raise money for the program. If you have anything spare at home, we would very much welcome any donations of produce or plants to help the program. Thank you to all those families that have sent their Sensory Garden form back in. We’d like to finalise the plant list and notify everyone before the end of term, so if you’ve not done so yet, please remember to send the forms in before then. It is going to be a fantastic garden! Speaking of “end of term”, we’d also like to draw up a Chook Roster for the holidays. Checking the chooks is not an onerous task, as they only need to be looked at every second day. And any eggs laid are yours to keep! We just need to make sure they have food and water. This job is ideal for families that live in town, and the more families involved, the better. Please contact me ASAP if you’re able to help. Our sincere thanks go out to all our “Friends” that have helped us this term. The success of this program, and the capacity we have to work in small groups, means that each child can have a better understanding of each task and concept, more responsibility and therefore more enjoyment and fulfilment each lesson. If you’re interested in joining us to help as a “Friend” next term, please let me know. I’ll draw up the roster in the next few days and email it to all our current “Friends” for them to check. We will always welcome new “Friends” gratefully and gleefully! Lisa McIntyre, SAKG Garden Specialist

BIG BLOKES BREAKFAST THANK YOU It was wonderful to see so many Big Blokes join the children for a healthy breakfast last Friday morning, provided by the P & F Association. We hope our guests enjoyed the experience, as we could well see that the children did! Our

sincere thanks go to those parents (mothers and fathers) who baked the delicious muffins and quiches – as we think these are the secret to the breakfasts’ success! And also sincere thanks to those that were helping to set up on Thursday afternoon, and those that served and cleaned up on Friday. As usual, it was a great team effort, that couldn’t and wouldn’t happen without that support. Thank you very much to all concerned, it was really worth it.

FATHERS’ DAY STALL Once again we have had a wonderful response to the Father’s Day Stall which was held on Friday 30 August. Thank you to all those who contributed in any way. The Social Services Program – which includes the Mothers’ Day Stall, the Fathers’ Day Stall and the Christmas Stall are all ways for the children to think about others. Not only is the gift they donate for someone else, they also purchase a gift for a loved one and the money raised is donated to charity. Towards the end of the year the children decide who the money raised from the three stalls goes to, generally it is donated to up to 10 smaller or local charities, it can also be donated towards an organisation such as the Senior Citizens. Thank you to all who donated gifts for the stall, there was a wide variety to choose from. It’s lovely to see the children try to decide between a golf ball and a pair of socks, or a mug full of lollies (which might be shared) or a pack of cards! Helpers on the day this year were the ever helpful Corinne Smith and Jan Steff, Eda Williamson, Shelley Darroch, Jo Aarons, Angela Field and Trish Symes. With this year’s Father’s Day stall being a wonderful success, we have managed to raise $460.00! There were also a great amount of items used for raffle prizes, the children were allowed to purchase two gifts each then had the option to purchase raffle tickets with any left over money, it’s always exciting to see whose name will be drawn out. Our next Social Services Stall will be the Christmas Stall on the last Monday of Term 4 - donated items for this stall can be varied as it can cater to all ages and sometimes the children like to purchase for siblings, so keep an eye out for any sales happening as you may grab some items that are just too good to live without! PETER’S PROJECT CATERING

Saturday 21 September 2013 Dear Parents The P & F Association have been contacted to cater for a dinner for ‘Peter’s Project’ (this is an organisation that is raising funds for an integrated Cancer Care Centre in Warrnambool). They are riding horses from Dunkeld to Moyston to raise funds for this project.

We are providing dinner on Saturday 21 September. We realise this is a busy time for families but felt it was worth

supporting this organisation who do so much to help others. We will need assistance with the preparation and set up from 1.00pm until 3.00pm, then again with the cooking, serving and cleaning up from 4:30pm. The venue for this dinner is the Dunkeld Football Club, Recreation Road, Dunkeld. Please consider helping out as this will once again raise funds for our school, in turn supporting our students. We will be cooking a BBQ so it is a good opportunity for some Dads to come along if any are free for an hour or so! If you can help out for any of the times (or part thereof) listed below please fill in the form below and return to school no later than TUESDAY 17

SEPTEMBER.

DUNKELD SES NEWS Whilst it has been nice to see the rain, we have had some wild wind events as well. It is pleasing that we have only had a couple of fallen trees during this time. Just remember to tie down or put away any loose items around your home when there severe wind warnings. Even a trampoline can become a dangerous missile during high winds. Apart from those couple of items we have been quiet. Our training nights have been busy as we continue to expand our learning skills and refine those things we have already learnt. On cold rainy nights you will find us in the shed tying knots or bandaging each other to keep up our skills. We welcome LeeAnne Gordon to our team. LeeAnne is already learning basic skills and has shown keen interest in attending some courses. On election weekend we will be sending a team of four to Rocklands for a Landsearch course. New members are always welcome and there are many interesting things to learn in the SES. So if anyone has even thought about coming, please come and visit on our training nights which are the second and fourth Wednesday of the month or if you would prefer a private visit talk to Doug McArthur or myself and we will arrange to meet you. Until next time keep safe. Karen Arnold, Deputy Controller Admin Dunkeld SES

If peace of mind is important to you, knowing that your future is looked after, take the time to arrange a meeting with a Financial Planner today. EUROPEAN WASPS It’s that time of year again - when queen wasps emerge from hibernation and look for sites to build their nests. A number of local farmers have reported an increase in wasp sightings, especially under wood piles. So it could be a sign of a bad wasp year. Now is the time to act! If you find a large European wasp, safely destroy it, as one queen has the potential to raise 1000’s of wasps. It’ll save a lot of discomfort later on.

DISCOVER DUNKELD Official program has now been released!

With just 5 weeks to go before the highly anticipated Discover Dunkeld – A Mosaic of Experiences weekend, the official program has been released. The jam packed program has all the details for each event that is set to occur over the weekend, including the opening event “The Grampians Regional Producers Harvest Dinner,” which will be held on 12 October by the Royal Mail Hotel. The program is now available to be viewed online at discoverdunkeld.com. If you would like a copy of both this year’s program and future programs, visit our website to join our mailing list and keep up to date with all Discover Dunkeld news. Make sure you tell your family and friends to check out the program so we can encourage this fantastic event to grow even more next year! Don’t forget – if you register for the Mosaic to Mountain fun run before the end of September, you’ll go in the draw to win a fabulous prize thanks to Sharp Airlines! The lucky winner will win a flight from Portland or Hamilton to Melbourne return. Shopping, theatre, footy all within an easy, comfortable flight. So jump online now and register for your chance to win! Once again the committee makes a call for anybody in the community who is willing to volunteer their help over the weekend of Discover Dunkeld. Without volunteers to assist, the day struggles to go ahead. If you are willing to offer a helping hand, even if it is for only part of the day, please contact Steve Kennedy via email at [email protected] or on 0428723308 More specifically in relation to our volunteer requirements and due to one of our very valued Market’s coordinators jet setting off in the weeks prior to the event, we are also seeking one assistant to help in the month leading up to the event. This position would involve all elements of event organisation that are required to make Market in the Park happen, and is the perfect opportunity for someone looking for exposure to an event of this size without the yearlong commitment. Prospective volunteers are; of course, welcome to join in on the action straight away if they so desire, and willing volunteers are encouraged to contact Paula Kelly at [email protected]. With all the hard work that the committee put into the weekend, we are delighted to hear from both returning visitors and ex-Dunkeld residents who are interested in attending. These are a few of the emails we have received over the last few weeks from individuals who used to reside in Dunkeld – there may be a some names a few of you might remember!

“Thank you so much for the Discover Dunkeld program. Looks great. What a great effort for such a small town. My father used to race up My Sturgeon in the car after church, whilst he yarned with Johnny Myers - often in the blazing summer heat! Best wishes, Agnes Ryan.” “I taught at Dunkeld 1960-1962 (secondary Science Maths etc.) My travelling companion also taught there 1959-1961 (primary). We have read about the festival and are interested in returning for the Welsh Male Choir at Devon Park. In those days my partners name was Miss Ruth Neumann” sent by Michael Bishop.

“I spent my primary school years in Dunkeld so am interested in hearing about the Discover Dunkeld festival. Regards, June Denning nee Broadhurst.”

DUNKELD PUBLIC LANDS COMMITTEE Caravan Park: A big thank you to Alan and Jim Dark for erecting the screens behind the cabins. This separates them from the caravan sites. Also I thank Joy Darroch for wallpapering the bedroom in the cabin. It looks great. Gary has been busy helping make improvements. The new unit is coming along well and we hope to have it on site early in November.

Conservation Volunteers: Katherine Dyson has put in for a grant to clean up Salt Creek. We await the decision with anticipation. Poor Katherine has done considerable damage to her ankle and is awaiting an operation. We wish her well. If you want to become involved, please contact Katherine. [email protected] or her mobile number is 0428 553 040. We are in the planning phase at present. I believe a request has been made for tree planting on a farm as part of Landcare. 2000 trees to plant.

Sawmill: I have had some ideas for sourcing sawlogs. Keep looking for us please. We hope to make our open and demonstration day on 20

October a great day.

Blood bank: I am going to organise a visit next week.

Phone 5577 2397 if you are interested in attending.

RSL Membership We invite ex-service men and women to be members and renew their membership to ensure the future of the RSL locally. If you are a relative of ex-service men or women you can also join the RSL. Annual membership fee is $40.00. By becoming a member of the RSL you will be helping the welfare of disabled war veterans and supporting your local RSL Sub-Branch. Application forms are available from the Secretary/Treasurer, Mrs Terrie Nicholson on 5573 3353. National Stroke Week - 9 to 15 September: Stroke is

Australia’s second biggest killer after coronary heart disease and a leading cause of disability. Stroke kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. The signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination and they can last a few seconds or up to 24 hours and then disappear. A stroke is always a medical emergency. Recognising the

signs of a stroke and getting fast treatment can be the difference between death or severe disability and a good

recovery. Strokes are preventable and treatable. Regardless of what type of stroke or what treatment, the faster someone gets treatment the better.

Using the FAST Test involves asking three simple questions: Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? Arm Can they lift both arms? Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000

straight away.

Facial weakness, arm weakness and difficulty with speech are the most common signs of stroke, but they are not the only signs. Other signs of stroke may include one, or a combination of: •Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body. •Difficulty speaking or understanding. •Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall. •Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes. •Headache, usually severe and abrupt onset or unexplained change in the pattern of headaches. •Difficulty swallowing. The signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination and they can last a few seconds or up to 24 hours and then disappear. When symptoms disappear within 24 hours, this episode may be a mini stroke or Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA). For further information please visit: www.strokefoundation.com.au/ If you or someone else experiences the signs of stroke, no matter how long they last, call 000 immediately.

FROM THE LIONS DEN For our last dinner meeting we went into the Hamilton Lions Dinner meeting where they conducted the local round of the Youth of the year competitions. Four students of year 11 were in the competition to try and advance to district, state and then national selection as the winner of the Youth of Year. There are various parts to the competition, but the one that we went to involved the students giving two x two minute talks about subjects selected by the judges. They then had to give a five minute talk on a subject selected by the participants. These students are certainly a credit to their parents and schools. The national winner receives a trip for two to Europe. Football supporters Following the article we did for the Melbourne Football Club supporters, I wish to tell you about a Collingwood supporter. My son, Clinton, has always been an ardent Collingwood supporter. Last month he went to a dentist because of a toothache. The dentist advised him to have the tooth extracted but Clinton refused and said that he wanted to have a filling and keep the tooth. The dentist examined the tooth again but stuck to his original advice of having an extraction. Clinton again said that he wanted to keep the tooth, and that the money was not a problem. At this that dentist queried why he was so intent on keeping the tooth. Clinton said, “I want to keep it so that I can truthfully say that there is a Collingwood supporter over the age of 15 with a full set of teeth.” True story! Peter Hinchey

be providing background information on Hamilton Legacy and also Legacy Australia. Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service. Legacy currently cares for 100,000 widows and 1,900 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia. Monte Vista: With reference to the information printed about

“Monte Vista” in issue number 14, Brian and Betty Lacy from Hamilton have advised that Isobel Holt was the author of the article. Thank you Brian and Betty! Templeton Centenary (1839 – 1939) – Link of Early Australia: Just 100 years ago this month, Andrew and

Jacobina Templeton arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria from Ayr Scotland. This interesting link was brought to notice yesterday by Mrs Malcolm Beaton of Naracoorte, South Australia, one of the granddaughters. Andrew Templeton and his wife came out in a sailing boat named “David Clarke” in October 1839. The journey taking four months. They settled in Melbourne for a few years and lived on the hill where Government House now stands. Melbourne at that time was a small town, boasting only one two storey house and it was a common sight to see bullock drays bogged in Collins Street. From Melbourne they went to Gippsland but they did not stay very long there. In 1846 they journeyed by bullock dray to the Western District of Victoria. The family settled at Cavendish for a year but moved back to Dunkeld (then Mount Sturgeon). They opened the first store in Dunkeld. The eldest boys were sent to Port Fairy for their early education; afterwards the eldest William went to Melbourne to school. Mrs Beaton’s father, the late John Templeton, was the second eldest son; there were two older sisters, Jacobina and Janet. He (John) was born at Brighton two weeks before leaving for Cavendish, the trip taking six weeks, blazing the trail through creeks and bush, there were no bridges or roads, only tracks, the real pioneer spirit. The eldest son William was sent to Melbourne to be educated and often recounted tales of events that happened during his stay there. One thing, the policeman on night duty announced at the close of each hour that all was well at the time. The second son, John, was sent to Port Fairy while very young. He and a boy from Penshurst were the youngest in the school and the headmaster’s wife used to take them to their room after hearing them say their prayers would tuck them into bed and kiss them goodnight. Dunkeld and District CWA are on the Hunt!

We are collecting materials to make birthing kits to send to Papua New Guinea. While these

kits seem relatively simple and inexpensive for us to make, they are true life-savers for

newborn babies and their mothers in third world countries.

We are assembling these kits during our meeting on November 20 and will be collecting

materials until then.

Please feel free to donate any of the listed items into the box provided at the Dunkeld

Newsagency.

1. Cotton fabric sheets - 110cm square (New bed sheets or the like are suitable, we can sew

to size)

2. Plastic sheets - 120cm square (eg: plastic table cloth material available at discount

stores)

3. Cakes of soap

4. Nail brushes

5. 2 x lengths of cotton tape 25cm length, 1cm width

6. Cloth nappies

7. Nappy pins

8. Cotton face washers

9. Cotton bunny rugs

10. 00 or 000 cotton singlets

11. Packs of high absorbent sanitary napkins

We thank you in advance for your kind and very worthwhile contribution.
