From The VicarageDear Friends,It happened in the thC BC. The discovery that it is all One. Before then, each clan, tribe, tree, river had its own god, its own being, nature and life. , years ago, in diverse parts of the world, it dawned that there is only One. This huge idea was enshrined in the belief of Monotheism. The implica ons are immense. In Monotheism there is no ul mate ‘Other’, no dualism. All life, from virus to whale is one. All existence from atom to planet is one. All love, a rac on and rela onship is one. The only alterna ve is ‘Nothing’.Of course, people forget. It suits some to think themselves special, apart, excep onal. It can build cohesion for lonely individuals and lost minority groups and failed poli cians to invent an enemy, an external threat, ‘them’ as opposed to us.This amnesia, this loneliness can then be exploited by men of blood and power and above all, fear. Christchurch NZ.Therefore we have constantly to be on our guard, on our own behalf and on behalf of those who become scapegoated, targeted, blamed. You would think that in this modern scien fi c and secular age we would all know this. There is only one Big Bang, only one gravity, only one planet. But no, it needs to be more personal and emo onal than that. The scien fi c materialist culture, which in part rejects any concept involving ‘god’ is hurtling us to destruc on far faster than any other belief system which has ever existed. Perhaps this is because it believes in… nothing…Perhaps the point in Monotheism is that it gives iden ty, mind and being to the centre and source of Oneness, and calls it ‘God’, and encourages us to have a personal emo onal collabora ve rela onship with that very Oneness. This is important, as the splits and dualisms, the threats and tempta ons, the lusts and glu onies which threaten the whole planet are not outside of us at all. They are not in those of other races or faiths or nts, they are within you and me. They are our inherited and evolved drives and ins ncts, the impulse to overcome, kill compe tors, consume and reproduce.Monotheism calls for an inner reconcilia on between the old evolved cave human within and the new human homo ‘sapiens’ the ‘one who knows’.We know that all is One. We need constant reminding, so that those who think they can bring peace by a acking the ‘others’ are exposed in their falsehood. At Easter we think what life would be like if the One absorbed all our projec ons and hatreds and hurts in a body on a Cross, and then rose from death and nothingness in forgiveness, to off er us a new way of Life and Being and Love. Happy Easter.

This is a fulfi lling experience for the drivers who can volunteer as much, or as li le, as they wish. Most trips are to the Cerne Abbas surgery but some are to Dorchester County Hospital (for which parking passes are provided), or occasionally further afi eld. Although many pa ents live in Cerne, as do most of our drivers, some are in outlying villages within the surgery’s catchment area. We are always open to welcoming new drivers as demand fl uctuates and some mes we cannot fulfi l a request. Drivers vary in how many trips they volunteer for. A few drive frequently, but some only occasionally, though their contribu on is nonetheless very welcome. Normally drives are off ered to the whole group by email and drivers volunteer as they wish with no pressure to accept. As well as needing a valid driving licence and a roadworthy vehicle, all

School life con nues to be full of learning and this month the school par cipated with a ‘Love to Read’ week coinciding with World Book Day, in which we celebrated diff erent books and stories. There were several photo compe ons as part of the week, guessing which bookshelf belongs to which teacher! And also ‘Who is reading?’ Guessing the teacher from the photo. Well done to our Abbey Class winners – we hope you enjoy your new books! On World Book Day, the children dressed up as diff erent book characters. We also were very lucky to have a visit from author and storyteller Chris Connaughton, who inspired the children with his adventure stories and joined us in classes. He even wrote the beginning of an adventure story for us about our school… it ended with the shadow of the Cerne Abbas Giant coming to life! We have been working in groups to plan and write our own adventure stories, which have been entered into a collabora ve wri ng compe on with the other Dorchester Schools. We have recently announced our winning entrants who will be going to the semi-fi nal round of the compe on at Thomas Hardye School later this term. We wish them luck! The school also par cipated with Bri sh Science Week ( th- th March). Each of our classes explored new science concepts and conducted their own experiments. We also had a visit from a Science Dome – when inside we learnt about the diff erent countries in the world and the constella ons. Back at school we conducted some exci ng experiments with dry ice! Do look at our webpage where you will fi nd our latest newsle er and class blogs about all our learning experiences. As the term rushes by and spring is beginning to show signs of appearing we are thinking about our Easter Service and performance. We are busy assigning diff erent roles and prac sing songs. We would like to extend the invita on to a end our Easter service at St Mary’s Church for our a ernoon performance on Tuesday nd April at . am. The children would love to spread some Easter joy for all. LITTLE DUCKLINGS We are pleased to announce the extension of our Founda on Base Classroom to include -year-olds from April . Sessions will be available fi ve days a week with the provision of before school care available for fi ve mornings. For further informa on please contact the school offi ce.

The Li le Giants Preschool has had a busy month, star ng with World Book Day and an Usborne Books sponsored listen. The children came dressed as characters from their favourite books and have been collec ng sponsorship for how long they have listened to stories for a week. The total amount raised will go towards new books for the preschool and a book for each child. We held a parents’ evening over two nights for parents/carers to hear about their child’s progress. A fundraising Big Breakfast in March was a huge success and well supported.

The Yeovil League Division team won all six points at home to Yetminster and gained another couple of valuable points at Odcombe, but won no points at home against league leaders Milborne Acorns and now lie seventh out of eight. However, just two more points from their remaining two matches will be enough to escape the bo om two and remain in Division next season. In Division of the Blackmore Vale League Cerne Abbots lost at home - against fellow strugglers Shroton and - against Stalbridge Falcons. Abbots will fi nish bo om of the Division, so will play in Division next season. In the Blackmore Vale League Division Giants won - against bo om of the table Sturlings. Giants then had another close fi nish at home to OkeLeaves. Each team won a mat, but Giants won the match - on aggregate, by virtue of just a single shot. Giants are currently in sixth place of eight. Four points from their remaining two away matches would guarantee Giants a place in the topfl ight next season. However, their fi nal match is a “double pointer” away to relega on rivals, Templecombe Bees, so another exci ng fi nish may be in the offi ng!

The Royal Oak held a quiz that evening and, very kindly donated raised that evening. As this goes to press we have a quiz at Herrison Hall, Charlton Down with a huge raffl e organised by our fundraising lady, Kirsty. covers all cold-calling rela ng to pensions, including from legi mate fi rms, but it’s intended to target fraudsters. The Government says cold-calling is one of the most common methods used by pension scammers, and research from the Money Advice Service suggests that there are as many as million scam calls a year. Vic ms of pension scams can be le with no money for their re rement. According to the Regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), vic ms of pension scams lost an average of , each last year. Not all calls about pensions have been banned – but to be legal, BOTH of the following must apply:• The caller must be authorised by the FCA, or be the trustee or manager of a pension scheme. • AND you must have consented to receive calls from the organisa on, or have an exis ng rela onship with the caller. If you receive a call about your pension in any other situa on, the call is illegal and may be a scam, and you should record the phone number and try to get extra informa on from the caller, such as the name of the company they are represen ng. Be careful not to give the caller any of your personal informa on. You can then report it to the Informa on Commisioner’s Offi ce at www.ico.org.uk or by calling . If you think you’ve been a vic m of fraud, you can report it to Ac on Fraud, the na onal fraud and cybercrime repor ng centre, online at www.ac onfraud.police.uk or by calling ASIAN HORNET (Vespa velu na) is an invasive non-na ve species from Asia. It arrived in southern France in , where it has spread rapidly and is now endemic. It is also well established in Jersey and northern Spain. As a highly eff ec ve predator of insects, including honey bees and other benefi cial species, it can devastate bee colonies and threatens the existence of other wildlife. Anecdotal evidence from some parts of France suggests that bird and fi sh life that depend on insects for nutri on have been blighted where the concentra on of Asian hornet nests is high. The threat it poses is serious and much greater than ‘a

bee keeping’ problem. A number of sigh ngs have been recorded in the UK since . In there were three in Cornwall, two in Hampshire, and one each in Surrey and Kent. Six nests were destroyed by Defra experts. If you sight an Asian hornet please call one of the following: Duncan Fergusson , Penny Gostelow or Kevin Pope (seasonal bee inspector)

. It is crucial you report sigh ngs so our experts can take quick and eff ec ve ac on to eradicate Asian hornets.

Wildlife Conserva on work on Giant HillChalk downland is one of the UK’s most endangered habitats. Bu erfl ies, like the Adonis blue and Duke of Burgundy, and chalk-loving plants such as bee orchids, horseshoe vetch and rock-rose which thrive on unimproved slopes like those on Giant Hill, are threatened by many factors, including modern agriculture and other more insidious ones that we know less about, such as climate change and increased nitrogen from pollu on falling with rain and over-fer lising the chalk turf.About years ago, Bu erfl y Conserva on began to work with the Minterne

Estate to improve bu erfl y habitats, concentra ng on areas where bramble, thorn and ash trees were beginning to convert the open downland into woodland. At the same me, volunteers walked fi xed routes to count

bu erfl ies, and fi nd out how rarer species like the Duke of Burgundy and the marsh fri llary (pictured) were faring. These ‘transect’ surveys have shown the changing fortunes of diff erent species alongside annual weather records and

other factors. Both the Duke of Burgundy and the marsh fri llary have fared well on Giant Hill, and the site is now one of the best spots in Dorset for these species. In , our EuCAN Community Interest Company’s Cerne Valley Project began work on the chalk downs between Godmanstone and Lyons Gate, working with Bu erfl y Conserva on, Minterne Estate and other landowners. This project, funded by the Patsy Wood Trust, has enabled a happy band of adults with learning disabili es and mental health problems, as well as Bu erfl y Conserva on and other local volunteers, to work together most Thursdays in the winter to improve the habitats on the downs. Local people may have seen us on the slopes east of and below the Giant, where we have extended the chalk grassland by up to metres and removed scrub and trees that have encroached from the top of the steep chalk quarry overlooking the cricket ground. We cleared Cotoneaster that had spread in from the village.Rachel Jones, Bu erfl y Conserva on’s offi cer responsible for the Duke of Burgundy work in Dorset, has recently produced a report showing how this species is doing. It is gra fying to see that since when our project began, the numbers have increased enormously. Bu erfl y ecology is so complex that there must be many diff erent factors at work, but we would like to think that some of the bu erfl y’s success is due to our hard work!We are holding guided walks to see the early bu erfl ies and their habitats as part of the Cerne Giant Fes val on Saturday th May at . am and pm. Everyone welcome!
