As we head into the fall season, and we are bombarded with advertisements of jack o lanterns and
the flavors of pumpkin, stop and
consider how blessed we are that our lives
as Christians are much like pumpkins…
Being a Christian is like being a pumpkin.
God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes off all the dirt.
Then he scoops out all the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed.
Then he creates for you a new smiling face and puts His light inside of you to
shine for all the world to see!

In remembrance of the events that took place September 11, 2001,
we gathered together to remember those who lost their lives and to pray for our nation.
Cub Scout Pack 611 led us in a flag ceremony, raising our flag and then lowering it to half-mast.
Dr. Pettinger then shared with students about another opportunity our school will have to come
together and celebrate in April. There was a tree that was more than 90 years old that stood in the
heart of downtown Oklahoma City. That tree was nearly destroyed when terrorists attacked the
Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995. However, hundreds of community citizens, family
members of those who were killed, survivors and rescue workers came together in an effort to save
this tree that had survived the bomb’s blast. Not only did the tree begin to thrive, but seeds were
taken from the tree and seedlings were grown. Although very few seedlings are shared each year, our school applied for and was chosen to receive one of these Survivor Tree seedlings.
In April, we will have a firefighter here on campus who was present at the site on the day of the
9/11 attack on the Twin Towers in New York. He will be with us to plant the seedling in memory of
those who have lost their lives in these horrific attacks, and as a symbol of human resilience.
The inscription around the Survivor Tree in Oklahoma City reads, “The spirit of this city and this nation will not be defeated; our deeply rooted faith sustains us all.”
We are so blessed with the privilege to worship our mighty God here at Grace Christian School, a God who cares for each of us and loves us deeply.

Dr. Pettinger shared a message in Chapel this month about tools. Tools can be quite helpful when
they are used in the right way and for the right purpose. However, those same tools can cause harm when used in the wrong way. He shared about one
particular tool that is actually mentioned in the Bible 93 times. In fact, even God made use of this amazing tool. He informed students that each and every one of
us was given one of these tools as well, and challenged students to guess what the tool could
possibly be. He had one of these tools hidden in a bag and had several students reach inside to try to guess
the mysterious tool…but no one was able to guess! It’s the TONGUE!! And he had a tongue from a cow in
the bag. He challenged the students to use their tongues for good at least 5 times that very day!
Pastor Joe Montoya from Cottonwood Church was a guest speaker in Chapel this month. He shared about
how God wants to be powerful in each of our lives. He read from the Bible about the story of Gideon and how he and his men blew their trumpets as an expression of praise for the Lord. God then caused confusion among the enemies and Gideon and his men were victorious.
Students read from Hebrews 13 about sacrifices that are pleasing to God…sacrifices such as praising God, singing, reading the Word, thanking Him…give to Him every day!
Mrs. Summers’ 3rd grade class shared in Chapel about the keys to SUCCESS. Success is not about
winning a medal or a trophy, or about being popular or having the most toys. SUCCESS is about trying 100% in your heart to be the very best you can be! They shared lessons from Mr. John Wooden’s book Inch and Miles about the pyramid of success! The building blocks in the pyramid include hard work,
enthusiasm, friendship, loyalty, cooperation, self-control, alertness, action, determination, fitness,
skill, spirit, poise and confidence! With these building blocks in place you are sure to
achieve SUCCESS in all you do!
