Our Active Culture…

Hororata Cross Country…The Hororata Cross Country was held at the Hororata Domain on Friday 3 June 2016. I am proud to report that all but three children, who were injured or absent on the day, achieved our goal and completed the course. This is credit to the children and teachers and to our fitness programme, which has not only improved student health and fitness in our school, but also installed a real ‘Can Do’ attitude in our kids. The following children achieved notable success at the Hororata Cross Country: Yr 1: Lucy Flett (1st), Mackenzie Rowlands (2nd), Rianna Alinar (3rd); Fletcher Thwaites (1st), Isaac McCorkindale (2nd) Luke Oliver-Albon (3rd). Yr 2: Logan Hadfield (1st), Leithan Parker (2nd), Hunter Kennedy (3rd); Yr 3: Toby Thwaites (1st), Dustin Rowlands (2nd), Brodie Hey (3rd); Poppy Freeman (1st). Yr 4: Blake Booth (1st), Quin Brown (2nd), Taane Buechele (3rd); Zoe Parker (1st), Ellie Flett (2nd), Ayla Abraham/Jessie Smith (3rd=). Yr 5: Samuel Hadfield (1st), Charlie Blackburn (2nd), Joe Cookson (3rd); Holly Smith (1st), Kiana Buechele (2nd), Livi Williamson (3rd). Yr 6: Ben Smith (1st), Will Cookson (2nd), Tom Chaffey (3rd); Grace Flett (1st), Shimee Araguas (2nd), Esther Bruce (3rd).

Our Learning Culture…

Up, Up & Away… To complement our Semester One Collaborative Science topic ‘Up, Up & Away’ (Flight in the Physical World), Michael Oakley a local aeronautical expert visited our school with his hot air balloon and glider in late May. Michael and his assistant Britta assembled his hot air balloon in the school grounds and much to the excitement of the children tethered the balloon and Megan Stewart off the ground. After talking to the children about how balloons fly/float/glide/drive; the parts of a hot air balloon and some really interesting facts about the history of balloon flight (oldest form of flight), he then assembled his glider in the school grounds and gave a similar description of the principles of glider flight featuring Julia Raybould as the demo pilot.

To conclude this unit, we will be visiting the Air Force Museum of New Zealand (Wigram), Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust (Westpac Helicopters) and the Christchurch International Airport on Friday 1 July 2016. The day’s activities will be a great way to summarize everything we have learned about flight and will include interactive learning experiences which will last in your child’s memory long after they have finished school. Please note we are scheduling a late return to school on this day. Refer to the attached letter and permission form for more information.

Haere mai... I would like welcome Trinity Wright (Piwakawaka) to our school. I am confident that your time here will be both enjoyable and rewarding.

Reminder, after the awesome success of the two PTA Working-bees (Reno Rumbles) we held in 2015, we thought we would tempt our luck at another this term. With a focus on preparing our grounds for our 150th Anniversary celebration in 2020, we will be renovating our school gardens, polishing off a few playground maintenance jobs and ticking off some health & safety ‘to do’s’ around the school.

We are planning the PTA Reno Rumble for Saturday 18 June 2016, 3.00pm onwards (mums, dads and kids welcome). Pre-schooler care will be available for the younger members of the school community. With many hands, I think we could polish off the ‘to do’ list attached to this newsletter in a few hours. If the date or time doesn’t suit, feel free to contact me and we could arrange for you to come down and lend a hand at a different time.

Thanks for supporting our school

Marty Gameson (Principal)

Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Hi everyone. What a fabulous if frosty day we had at our cross country event. The children ran superbly and it was great to catch up with you all. Thank you for helping the children with their spelling, they all seem to be very enthusiastic about their learning. We will test them on those words and get new lists ready for Friday. It would be very helpful if parents could spend a few minutes each night with their child practising recognising their sight words in their reading notebooks. I have noticed that these words are not well known and although we practise them in class they would appear to need more repetition. Have fun! Regards Julia

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all, Time is going so quickly that I forgot that newsletter week has rolled around again! It seems that we have a lot of talented hair stylist parents and children in our school. What a great turn out for Wacky Hair day! We had a rainbow of wigs, puffed up candy floss colour, landscaping and gardens, bird nests, pig tails galore, multi-coloured racing stripes and even a few Joe Dirt look alikes. Over the next two weeks we will be writing poems for the upcoming speech and poetry recital. Once the children have learned these poems they need to practise them so that they can recite them from memory. Year 3 recite an acrostic poem, Year 4 recite a free verse poem and Year 2 recite a poem chosen from a selection. Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi Everyone

Well the cooler weather has well and truly hit. Can you please ensure that you send your child to school with lots of warm clothes on as they all complain that they are cold first thing in the morning. Congratulations to all cross country runners – you are all stars, also congratulations to all those who made it through to the Malvern Cross Country. Good luck! Last week Tui was lucky enough to have a new member join us and I would like to wish Maddy a warm welcome to our class. Thank you to all the wonderful parents who have made sure their child has a reading/library folder it is greatly appreciated.

Cheers Jenni

Here are some excerpts from our imaginary stories about going for a ride in a hot air balloon; and our recollections about our hot air balloon visit to school.

We saw a hot air balloon on Friday. We saw a glider. It was a big glider. The hot air balloon is big. Mackenzie

Little tractors down on the farms while I am in the air. Woosh! went the burner. It was hot. James

I saw a hot air balloon. It landed on the van. It was fun. Zander

Mr Oakley came to show us the hot air balloon and he showed us the glider. The hot air balloon was going up onto the roof of the van. Isaac Mc

We were so lucky on Friday because we saw a hot air balloon at school. The hot air balloon was wiggling while it was blowing up. The hot air balloon landed on the van. Mac

Flames shooting up into the balloon as we were flying in my balloon. I saw my whole place and the school below me. I felt happy. It was cold. I heard the burner putting hot air in the balloon. I liked it. I saw my family waving to me. Sam

Tiny cars zooming along black lines. I can see heaps of people. The burner makes heaps of noise. I felt heaps of hot air and it burns me. Hunter

We were so lucky because on Friday we saw a glider and a hot air balloon on the field. The hot air balloon was swaying in the air. Everyone was running up and down because they thought it was going to land on them. It was blue and an army colour. The glider was white and Miss Raybould hopped into it. She had a parachute on. It was cool. Lucy

Tiny people waving up at us as I floated in my hot air balloon. I saw the mountains and the snow was shining. I can feel the wind and I wore a beanie to keep me warm. I can see some birds tweeting at me. Luke

We had a lucky day because we met a hot air balloon. It had a burner. The burner was hot and it made me sweat. Fletcher

Tiny motorbikes were zooming up the road when I looked down from my hot air balloon. I see cars zooming down the road. It was hot up in the air. Brayden

We saw a hot air balloon and a glider. The burner was so hot and noisy. The glider has massive wings. There was a hot air balloon on the van. It was amazing. The hot air balloon was getting bigger as it was pumped. Rianna

I saw little people from my hot air balloon. I felt happy. I heard the burner. It was noisy. Daria

I can see mountains and clouds. Ollie

The burner was so noisy it gave me a big fright. Mr Oakley blew up the hot air balloon with a big heater. It was going side to side. I was so scared I thought it was going to fall on us. It was huge. Lachlan

Little cars zooming on little black lines on the ground. I saw little people waving at me. Leithan
