    Presidents Message___________________________________________

    Greetings, chapter members!

This month represents the unofficial end of summer where all fun thingmust come to an end. It also means back to school for our island keiki.

With the new school year already in full effect for many institutions, we araware of the challenges that students, teachers and parents must go

    through.

Budget cuts and teacher furloughs are some of the maladies from the

ast school year that still plague us today.

In order to combat the challenges that schools face today, we the Hawaii Jaycees have bondedogether to kick-off the 3rd Annual Hawaii Jaycees Adopt-a-School Day (AASD), hosted by the Honolulu

Chinese Jaycees. Although the actual day isnt till October 10, 2010 and may seem like light years awayplanning for this important day is already off in full swing and has been for the last few months.

Cheers to VP Krystal Kwebly Lee for serving as AASD Co-Chair, along with Patrick Im Just aMember Tomiyasu. They have been hard at work connecting with various community groups, schoolsand business to reach our goal of involving over 100 schools & organizations. A big shout-out to AASDFinance Chair Sarah Big Money Young for coordinating the donations and sponsorships; Jon TomMoffat Cook for organizing the public relations campaign.

This is truly a team effort that involves other chapters and members of our community. I am proud thaHCJ is leading the way by hosting this outstanding project. For the next couple of months, there will be aplethora of opportunities to get involved. Consider lending your personal expertise and talents to make th

an even better project and a better place for Hawaii s schools.

    Yours in Jaycees,

    Ryan Ng

    59th President, Developing Tomorrows LeadersToday.

__________Adopt-A-School Fundraiser @ Don HoThe challenge of a large-scale, Statewide project

such as AASD is not only getting the manpower to run it,but also the money to fund it. So, led by AASD

Fundraising Chair and HCJer Sarah Young, a night ofun, singing and Jaycee spirit was held Sunday, August 1st

at the famed Don Hos Grill in the Aloha Marketplace.

If you came that evening you would have beengreeted at the door by the friendly faces and warm smilesof HCJ members Ana Che, Brandon Sugiura and, yes,

Sarah Young. This trio manned the entrance table, checking in our great guests and supporters from theopening of the festivities at 6PM.

Famed local entertainer Al Waterson took on the MC duties and gave it his usual dynamic stamp, providing spirited vocals and a warmth that came through loud and clear. The highlight? It had to be his

endition of Sweet Caroline, which included a brief duet with our own HIJC President, Mr. Stan Fichtmaf you see Stan auditioning on the next season of American Idol, youll know who to blame.

Speaking of American Idol, we were also honored to have a performance by Jordan Segundo. He toover the mic for 2 songs and showed exactly why he s known as a great entertainer. Jordan will continue support of AASD by also appearing at the big KickOff Rally at Ala Moana later this month. If he does half

well as he did this night, it will be a great show!

The night wasnt all singing, however. AASD Co-Chairs Patrick Tomiyasu and Krystal Lee both spokabout the project and the importance of the support we re giving our local schools. It was an importanteminder that we still have to keep pushing forward to our goal(s) and keep reaching out to more

    communities.

The spirit of community and friendship wasnt just coming from the stage. The great achievement of thnight was to have so many Jaycees, past and present, along with friends and family, come out and share

evening out. It is rare to see the range of people that madtime to be at Don Hos in order to support this project.

All told, we had over 160 supporters come through the

door and stand behind the Jaycees and AASD. It was trua wonderful thing to see.

We want to extend a huge Mahalo! to all who attendeand made it such a time to remember. It reminded us thawe are a strong organization with a great purpose, blesse

with the backing of so many great people.

Much Mahalo to all who came to Don Hos and supported Adopt-A-School!

_______________________Meet New Member Melanie WongGreetings Everyone! This is my first year as a Honolulu

Chinese Jaycees member and I am glad to be on board. Ionly met a few of the members, but hopefully through moreHCJ events and the infamous Facebook, I can meet everyBut, in the meantime, Ill share a bit of myself with you all.

As many of you may know, I am a current 2010 MissChinatown member. I currently hold the title as Miss HawaChinese First Princess 2010.

With this title I have been able to volunteer with greatorganizations such as Food Bank Hawaii, Mothers AgainstDrunk Driving (MADD), Lunalilo Homes, and the HonoluluPolice Department.

However, the greatest benefit as a court member hasbeen gaining an insight into the Chinese and Chinatown

community. It is through this opportunity that I have been able to work with HCJ. My goal as both a HCJ MCH member is rebuild our relationship and to find opportunities for collaboration.

During the day, I work as a land/community planner for PBR HAWAII & Associates. My work includescampus and community planning. This involves community outreach, long-range planning, and visualizad like to think that my work will one day help to reshape Hawaiis built environment.

Outside of my commitments, I love to spend time with my dog, Murphy, friends and family. I enjoy eagreat food when I dont have to worry about fitting into a cheong sam, watching new documentaries andanything with Anne Hathaway, and being physically active.

Some would call me an adventurer because I am always open to trying new things. Im currently learnabout Hawaiis great outdoor climbing spots. So when Im not making appearances for MCH, working, anprepping for my upcoming pageant (Miss Asian America), Im preparing for my next climb.

    Thanks for readingMelanie

    NEIL ABERCROMBIE SPEAKS

TO HCJ GMM by Ryan Ng

Former U.S. Congressman and Hawaii Gubernatoria

candidate Neil Abercrombie spoke to the HCJ General

Membership meeting on July 20. He spoke about his

history as a public servant, having spent a large part of

    his career in politics.

He outlined his plan on what he would do as the

future governor of Hawaii as well as presented his plan

on various issues as the economy, education and

    energy.

Members were given a chance to ask questions

throughout his presentation. Known as an advocate for

the environment, he made a big point about it. I am a

big proponent of keeping agricultural lands in

agriculture, said Abercrombie. We should invest in ou

farmers and start growing more foods locally.

After his presentation was over, Abercrombie joined reciting the Jaycee creed and was presented with an

official HCJ t-shirt by President Ryan as a souvenir.

As for education, Abercrombie eventually donated, o

behalf of his campaign, a sponsorship check to the

Hawaii Jaycees Adopt-a-School Day. Way to go Neiland way to support Hawaii schools!
