Wai Ngo Ge Pahngyau,

What an exhausting and somewhat fun time that members and guests had at the 50th StatFair! Tremendous thanks goes out to Terence Young, Glennon Young, Paul Chun, Giffor

Chang, Kelfred Chang, and Kalene Sakamoto for the planning and for their countless houspent at the fair.

Also, to members from our chapter, Hawaii Kai Jaycees, Honolulu Filipino Junior

You Party is in the works.

The chapter hosted June’s Membership Closeout with delicious food. Lindley Low prepared clam chowder and toastedbread and I made cheesecake. There was some Texas Hold-Em card game playing with the assistance of Eddie Kam.

I had some fun in the sun for the fishnet collection of the “Save the Aloha Festivals Parade” effort near McCully ShoppCenter. Dohje to Jonathan Cook for awesome job coordinating the event with Hawaii Jaycees President Patrick Tomiyasu

and, last but not least, Ana Che who showed great enthusiasm by hollering out people to donate just $1.00. To our membersand friends, if you can assist Hawaii Jaycees in collecting a $1.00 each from family and friends. [Editor: You can give online

The festival began in China as an occasion for driving off evil spirits andpestilence, and for finding peace in one's life. The event is highlighted by the colorful dragon boat races, in which competingteams drive their canoes forward to the rhythm of pounding drums.

This year's festival is scheduled for August 23 & 24 and will feature local racing teams as well as groups from Australia,China, New Zealand, and the mainland. The weekend celebration includes a carnival, street vendors, music and fun!

Message From The Vice President

8/14/2019 NewsDragon - July 2008

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/newsdragon-july-2008 4/10

Our team showed up right on time Saturdaymorning to start collecting money. We had picked theMcCully & Kapiolani intersection as a prime spot fortraffic, while COOL Jaycees were manning an area

near Flavors of Honolulu.

Our strategy quickly changed from splitting up tolining up one big group together on 1 side. This provedto be a good move.

As we refined our sign-waving and sales pitch-ing,contributions started to land in our held out nets. State

President Patrick used the personal approach, askingdrivers directly if they could spare $1 to help out. Hissuccess rate proved to be very high. Some of us now

believe he could have a great career as a bum.

State Officers Eddie Kam & Leeza Agpaoa soon joined our initial group of the HCJ Board and Pres.Patrick. Both Eddie and Leeza showed great dedicationto the day’s work, pitching in immediately to help out.

The arrival of 3PM signaled an end to our productiveday. However, the non-productive time of talk story weon at the nearby bus stop.

It was a good time of relaxing and getting to know oCOOL Jaycee friends better. Steve Antonio regaled thecrowd with his tales of – and pictures from – meetingWWE wrestler John Cena that morning. If you see Stevask him about it.

The money was later counted out at the Jaycees offictotaling out at $507.14! A good haul for a 1st time effortfishnets and done in less than 5 hours. All involved shoube proud of their contribution that day.

NOTE: We are planning to do another FishnCollection, possibly on the weekend of August26

th. Please stay tuned. Donations can be given

Aloha Parade Fishnet Fundraiser

If there’s one thing the Chinese Jaycees know, it’s aGood Deal . So when VP Kathy Kam spotted the FreeKamaaina Tour of the great Iolani Palace, sheimmediately brought it to our attention.

The other Jaycees liked the price, as well as thechance to visit a great historical site. So we were on forJuly 6th.

After watching a video on the history of the palace, our group walked over to the Palace for the tour. Theexpedition began in the main hall, moving to the variourooms, including the royal dining room, King Kalakauabedroom and even the lavatories.

Our docent provided an excellent commentary oneach area, adding bits of history that truly made thePalace come alive.

Our tour ended in the basement, which resembled an ostreet. Rooms with windows looked out onto the cobblestoned hall down the center.

The most popular of the rooms, hands down,was….(drumroll )….the royal kitchen! In Hawaii, what

else could it be?

We ended the tour by taking a picture with ourdocent, who then hugged all of us (again, only inHawaii) and sent us on our way. Which was to Assagiofor lunch.

See below to continue on with us.

Eating At Assagio’s

Assagio’s is a popular place for meeting and eating. And no wonder, because the food is excellent.

We were hoping that their winning record wouldcontinue on our latest trip. Our seating was delayed, aseveryone had to run to their respective bank ATM in AlaMoana.

With our bank accounts depleted, we were taken toour table where we sat down. And waited. And waited.Luckily we had a basket of bread to survive on until thewaitress remembered to come back and take our order.

The different dishes finally arrived with the freshsmell that good food always brings with it. The groupthrew aside the bread and hungrily dug in,

During the meal, conversation centered on ourtime(s) in the Jaycees and what we looked forward to inthe 2nd half of this year.

Everyone agreed that the food was excellent onceagain. Just remember to get bread immediately. Youmight need it to hold you for a while.

Iolani Palace Tour & Dining Out

8/14/2019 NewsDragon - July 2008

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/newsdragon-july-2008 6/10

The June GMM got started right on time, called to order by reigning President Lily Fung. Board members wecalled up to give their reports on upcoming projects. As usual VP Kathy Kam had the most to say. Ms. Kam startedby promoting the then-upcoming Iolani Palace Tour (see Pg ) as well as the MDA Beef Stew Concert at BishopMuseum on July 19th [Call Kathy @ 271-0016 to help with Security].

After the reports, HCJers Daniel Cheung and Andrew Balmores treathe assembled members to a presentation about their work. Both men arFinancial Services Pros at New York Life Insurance. The two took turnstalking about the different services they provide their clients.

A couple of interesting pieces of information from their informativetalk:

1.  Even if, God forbid, New York Life did have to pay off all theirinsurance and financial obligations they would still have millionof dollars in capital remaining.

2.  New York Life offers an investment package that allows you to ‘Lock In’ the amount you invest. Should thinvestment go south, you still have your basic capital. It’s a guaranteed no-loss package. Talk to Daniel orAndrew if that interests you.

Afterward, our focus turned to formally inducting Andrew into HCJ.Although he has already assisted with 50th State Fair and come out to otherevents, President Lily had not sworn him in. Until tonight.

The pledge was performed flawlessly despite the tears of joy streamingdown the faces of all present. An excellent way to finish up. The meeting

was adjourned and food was eaten. See you at the next GMM!

After getting everything stowed away in the warehouse, we all went to Zippy’s for a well-deserved meal. “A Real Chinatown Hero”

Sun Hung “Sunny” Wong passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 ihis home in Nu’uanu. Sunny, who served his government for over fortyyears as a fiscal officer at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard, also served hisChinese community for as many fruitful years.

Founder and President of the Miss Chinatown Scholarship Pageant,Hawaii Dragon Boat Association, Chinatown Merchants Association,Mayor’s Downtown/Chinatown Task Force, and many other worthwhile

organizations, Sunny gave his heart to support the Chinese community. Sunny always madesure that the Honolulu Chinese Jaycees were involved with the Chinese community throughhis many projects and events.

Sunny was instrumental in bringing the Dragon Boat races to Hawaii and other Chinesecultural events. He was well respected in the community and a whisper from him was all thawas needed to get things going. He always looked out for the little guy and was alwayshumble.

Never taking credit for his achievements, Sunny always thanked the other guys. Due to hcountless achievements, Sunny was officially proclaimed the “Honorary Mayor of Chinatown” by Mayor Frank F. Fasi in 1994 and received a Community Recognition awardfrom the Hawaii Senate.

Thank you, Sunny, for your great service to ourGovernment and your outstanding service to ourChinese community. Godspeed.
