The SIA recently released details of the prosecution and subsequent conviction at Cardiff Crown Court, of a security director and a consultant to a security company for falsely claiming to be a member of the Security Industry Authority Approved Contractor Scheme.

The Port Talbot based company, Secure Serve Facilities Management, was accused of claiming that it was accredited in order to retain a remunerative contract with national supermarket chain Lidl.

Reportedly, the contract to provide security officers for Lidl stores across South Wales and the South West of England was worth in the region of £800k. Lidl made it a requirement that any contractor providing them with security services must hold Approved Company Status.

Secure Serve Facilities Management (SSFM) produced false documentation, which initially convinced the national supermarket chain of their credentials. However, after further inspection and liaison with the SIA, it was established that SSFM was not an Approved Company.

Nathan Salmon, Head of Investigation at the SIA commented on the SIA's commitment to upholding and preserving the standards of the Approved Contractor Scheme:

“Members of the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme achieve the highest standards which recognise them among the best providers of private security services. This prosecution seeks to uphold those standards; the SIA will investigate businesses who seek to claim approval when they have not met the standards.”

Mark Duffy, Managing Director at GSL Dardan Security, responded to the news by saying:

“We are very pleased at hearing the news of convictions for falsely claiming to be a member of the Approved Contractor Scheme. As a member, it is vital to both the reputation of our company and the relationship with our current customers, that the standards of the ACS are upheld. This conviction preserves the right of the customer to identify companies who are certified among the best providers of private security services.”

GSL Dardan Security is an SIA Approved Contractor for the provision of security guarding and key holding. We are also inspected biannually by the National Security Inspectorate and hold the NSI GUARDING GOLD award. Our scope of certification with the NSI covers the provision of Mobile Patrol Services, Static Site Guarding Services, Key holding and Alarm Response Services and Control Room Services.

stOn Thursday 21 March the Norwich team were invited to hold their weekly operations meeting at a different type of venue. The invitation came courtesy of Mervyn Wooltorton of the Gardline Group. Gardline Shipping Limited (GSL) was established in 1969, to provide marine support to a flourishing offshore oil and gas industry in the North Sea.

Today, GSL is the parent company of a diverse group of multi-disciplinary organisations involved in a range of activities that include satellite communications, marine sciences, security, ship building, dry dock engineering, geographical information systems, digital mapping and vessel charters.

The Gardline Group's principal offices are based in Gt. Yarmouth, UK with additional offices established in Ireland, South Africa, the USA, Middle East and Far East and Australia. The Gardline Group is a professional and environmentally aware organisation, which acknowledges the impact that its operations may potentially have on the environment.

The visit included a very informative tour of Gardline facilities and company history conducted by Michael Martins, Business Manager for coastal services, followed by a trip on one of their many vessels, the Alicat Gardian 7. These vessels are constructed by Gardline and used to transfer crews to the offshore wind farms. Gardian 7 was constructed in 2012 measures 20 metres in length, 6.5 metres in width and has a prop propulsion generating a maximum speed of 30 knots.

The trip was very informative for the team and gave us a chance to appreciate the work done by Gardline. GSL Dardan Limited have provided security for marine and offshore clients for over 20 years. During the trip the team were able to view several of our clients facilities from a different angle, the water, including Gardline, Asco and Eastport. This gave us a chance see the wind farms up close.

A big thank you from the team to everyone involved at Gardline.

Team Leaders on board

My name is Kevin Silk.

I am 25 years old and employed as a Senior Mobile Officer for the Peterborough Office.

Born and raised in Peterborough, I went to school at the Arthur Mellows Village College and have previously worked at AMF Bowling. I was also a mechanic for approximately 4 years.

I first started working in the security industry in 2010, joining Reliance Security (later to become known as Securitas) as a Mobile Response Officer. I then joined GSL Dardan in April 2012 as a Mobile Response Officer, and have since been promoted to the position of Senior Officer, which allows limited decision making authority and also provides leadership experience. I really enjoy the thrill of the job, knowing that I am contributing toward the company's position as the region's leading alarm response service provider as well as helping my colleagues to achieve their potential. I hope to use this experience to take on greater responsibility in the company in the future.

When I am not working I like to ride my bike and listen to music, but most of all I enjoy spending time with my wife and daughter.

DRIVING SAFETY

A few reported accidents in a row involving company vehicles prompt serious consideration. Not just for our people driving company vehicles but for all of us using our own vehicles. Looking at the recent incidents, I would draw attention to the following mistakes that have been reported, all resulting in damage to one or both vehicles:

·Not driving with sufficient attention to the road conditions skidding and crashing; one overturning.·Running into the back of a car in front.·Not noticing a post and driving into it.·Reversing into a tree – whiplash symptoms.·Pulling out of a driveway into the path of oncoming vehicle (“didn't see it”).·Edging out onto a major road to see if it was clear – it wasn't, result as above.

Recent reports from the Road Safety Partnership lay most of the blame on driver error, particularly on lack of attention. This may, in turn, be caused by distractions, including:

·Using mobile phones (possibly hand held radios?).·Texting while driving.·Reading texts while driving.·Eating, drinking while driving.·Attention drawn to satnav info display and/or audio instructions.

Go through the list. I'll bet no one can honestly say they're never guilty of any.The answer to the mobile phone menace is to turn the damn thing off while driving. Pick it up later.

During a Health and Safety meeting at the Asco Base in Great Yarmouth, GSL Dardan Security Officer Mitch Ellis was praised for challenging drivers who had demonstrated unsafe

behaviour.

Team Leader, Aidan Coughlan, and Peter Edwards, new site HSEQ Manager at Asco, would like to pass on their thanks to Mitch and the team.

Thank you...

To the GSS team: “Just wanted to pass on a BIG thank you to Ryan and yourself for sorting out the new intercom set-up for us last week.

It really has made things so much simpler for me when we have visitors, and the larger monitor means we can see people at the door much more clearly now which is great for

security etc.

Your guys got on with the work with the minimum of disruption to any of us here – they are a credit to your company.”

Glenn Purland, C A Design Services

A big thank you to Barry Fisher, who has shown true dedication and commitment to both GSL Dardan, the retail department and the Roys of Wroxham contract.

Barry went above and beyond, helping in an hour of need on not one, but three occasions.

Barry came into work even though scheduled on holiday to assist with training 3 new store managers in A.S.C.O.N.E and loss prevention, detection, profiling customers and reporting.

Barry also returned to work the following week, again during booked holiday. This time to assist with cover requirement as a result of a call-off on a retail shift.

The third occasion was Monday 11th March. As a result of the snow and icy weather, Barry a motorcyclist was not going to be able to travel to his store in Norwich. Barry left for work 4

hours early to catch a train from Ipswich to Norwich arriving 1.5 hours early. He then completed his shift before returning on the train home.

Much appreciated - Gavin Elmy, Retail Department Team Leader.
