NEWS & VIEWS COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE - KINGSTON ROAD - CAMBERLEY - SURREY - GU15 4AE - 01276 457600 Issue 4 - 7 October 2020 News & Views PARENT GOVERNOR VACANCIES I am writing to make you aware that Governing Board at Collingwood College has two Parent Governor vacancies. The Clerk to the Governing Board will begin the nomination process shortly and all parents/ carers will receive a letter detailing how the process work. I wanted to send this to explain a little more about what governors do and hopefully persuade you to consider volunteering to join us. Governors are volunteers who give their time freely to support the education and care of all Collingwood students. We do this by meeting regularly to receive reports from, and ask questions of, Mr Tanner, the Colleges Principal, and other members of the senior leadership team, enabling the Governing Board to seek assurance that Collingwood is providing the best possible learning and care for all students. School governing boards, including those in academies like Collingwood, are now expected to recruit governors with the skills and experience required to ensure we are effective in discharging our duties. We have a diverse range of skills and experience already represented on Collingwoods Governing Board and are looking for parents who have a general interest in education, the ability to analyse and understand data, or an understanding of finance and are comfortable asking questions. Training is provided for governors and we do expect all governors to engage in their own development as a way of ensuring our effectiveness as a Governing Board. Dear Parent/Carer We have received a few requests from families for support with uniform during what is a difficult time financially, given the uncertainty that Covid-19 has caused. I just wanted to make you aware of some of the lengths Collingwood has taken to support its community: We researched the cost of our uniform compared to other establishments (the ten main secondary schools locally who utilise Brendas Uniform shop). We are the second cheapest overall with half of the other establishments costing over £50 more than us for a full set of uniform. For example, we do not have blazers, ties, or our own bags. We feel that with these savings in comparison to other schools we can keep our stance on smart shoes. One of the reasons for logod trousers/skirts and smart shoes was to smarten up the uniform and we have managed to do so successfully whilst maintaining the low cost compared to the other local schools. We also recognise the health and safety necessity attached to wearing leather shoes. Where practical lessons take place, e.g. Science labs and Technology workshops, etc. it is felt that soft canvas shoes provide little protection or grip. PARENT GOVERNOR VACANCIES

The Clerk to the Governing Board will begin the nomination process shortly and all parents/carers will receive a letter detailing how the process work. Dear Parent/Carer We have received a few requests from families for support with uniform during what is a difficult time financially, given the uncertainty that Covid-19 has caused. I just wanted to make you aware of some of the lengths Collingwood has taken to support its community:

• We researched the cost of our uniform compared to other establishments (the ten main secondary schools locally who utilise Brenda’s Uniform shop). PARENT GOVERNOR VACANCIES

The Collingwood Governing Board meets once a term and operates five committees, which also meet each term. Governors at Collingwood sit on two of our five committees. Our meetings are at 8.00am and our aim is always to finish by 10.00am. Including reading documents, training and attending meetings, this equates for most governors, to roughly 50 hours each year. If you are interested in the education of all students at Collingwood and are prepared to contribute some of your time and energy to support the College’s continual strive to improve our provision, then please do consider nominating yourself for the vacancy. School governance is incredibly worthwhile and does make a difference. If you would like to find out more, or have any questions at this stage, then please do feel free to contact me, via the Clerk to the Governing Board at [email protected]

Mr Barker - Chair of the Governing Board

• We acknowledged that times were/are tough and subsequently created a Uniform Bank that many families utilised during the holidays. The Pastoral Team still have many pairs of trousers, skirts, polo shirts and College sweatshirts (mainly lower College colours/sizes) washed and ready to be distributed where necessary. Obviously not every size is catered for but we were amazed at the community spirit shown in resourcing our bank.

• When recognising the importance of exercise against the need to socially distance in a safe manner, we realised changing rooms for PE lessons were an issue and therefore allowed tracksuits to be worn over PE kit on days when students have PE. Furthermore, Collingwood has not enforced that certain tracksuit colours be worn. Other schools have made expensive logo’d tracksuits a compulsory part of their uniform list.

We feel we have kept a happy medium between maintaining the smartness to our uniform, whilst showing empathy for those that are struggling financially. However please do make contact with the College via your child’s Year Manager if you feel you would benefit from further assistance or would like to discuss your personal circumstances in more detail.

Mr Cleary - Senior Assistant Principal

Year Group Rotas Before and After College As from Monday 7 September the Library is following the rota below for students accessing the Library before and after College.

Break and Lunchtime During break and lunch times the Library will only permit the year groups that mirror breaks and lunchtimes to attend at the same time, i.e.:

• Years 7 and 10

• Year 9

• Years 8 and 11.

When there are two year groups they will be kept apart in the Library by a divider. There is a one-way system and signage for the students to follow. The number of students will be limited to 22 maximum per year group, a total of 44 students maximum at any one time. Rules to be adhered to when visiting the Library:

• Respect social distancing as much as possible

• Apply hand sanitiser before coming into the Library (we have a dispenser at the entrance)

• Wear a mask when browsing for books or DVDs

• Ask a member of staff if you need to access the fiction and non-fiction section

• Only three students of the same bubble are allowed at one time to choose books.

For the safety of everybody, it is compulsory to wear a face mask when choosing a book or a DVD in the Library. Please can we also ask that if students select a book from the shelves to read during break time and lunch time, that they keep their face mask on whilst reading the book. Overdue Library Books All Library Books that were borrowed before lockdown will need to be returned to the library as soon as possible. If for any reason these books cannot be returned, then please email Ms S Blay - Library Co-Manager at: [email protected]. Online Quiz The Library will be running a new and exciting online quiz, available from Monday 19 October 2020. Initially, this will be run as a trial, but if it proves popular it will be continued. So come along to the Library and try it!

Mrs N Teissonniere and Ms Blay - Library Co-Managers
