Saskatchewan’s Water Security Agency has announced it is launch-ing its first ever online consultation forum to receive input from Saskatchewan residents on agricul-tural drainage. “We committed to developing new approaches and regulations on agri-cultural drainage in the 25 Year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan and this is a major step in that direc-tion,” Minister responsible for Water Security Agency Ken Cheveldayoff comments. “This online forum offers an oppor-tunity to have a large number of people share ideas and information to help us develop the best overall poli-cy.” The Water Security Agency hired Saskatoon based Insightrix Research to create the online engagement forum to consult with individuals across the province. The forum will focus on agricultural drainage and be active from September 1 to March 31. It allows participants to discuss a range of topics related to agricultural drainage, including downstream flooding, water quality, and effects on biodiversity.

Investors are sitting on a lot of cash. The Investment Company Institute reports total U.S. money market mutu-al fund assets are cur-rently $2.632 trillion with $1.705 trillion attributed to institutional investors and $926.38 billion to retail investors. Canadian investors are similarly positioned. An Edward Jones poll shows that Canadians currently hold 13 per cent of their money in GICs and one-in-four plan to expand their cash and short-term holdings. The financial crisis remains fresh in the mem-ory of some and Canadian market volatility keeps the image vivid. In addi-tion, speculation sur-rounding the U.S. Federal Reserve and its eventual tapering of Quantitative Easing has prompted some fair sized market movements, as have reports of slowing growth in China. Given such con-ditions, these investors consider their heavy cash

weighting to be prudent. Some investors set cash aside for planned expens-es or emergencies, while others want the flexibility of moving quickly when market volatility gener-ates bargains. A number simply like the idea that cash is an asset that won’t suddenly drop in value, thereby providing capital preservation. Whatever their reasons, holding cash should not be passive and investors are wise to seek the best return. Over the short-term, some may find it easiest to opt for investment sav-ings accounts. These products trade in a simi-lar fashion to money mar-ket mutual funds, but without the high fees. Investment savings accounts have competitive rates that change with the market; the funds are not locked-in and can be easi-ly accessed within one business day; and they are insured up to $100,000 by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation

(CDIC). There are multi-ple issuers available in Canada, so investors can protect more than $100,000 at a time by spreading funds through the various issuers up to the insured limit. Investors can purchase short-term Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GICs) that generally pay a higher interest rate and provide the security of knowing the principal is returned at maturity. Those acquired through CDIC-member institu-tions are also insured up to $100,000. With inter-est rates expected to rise over the next few years, investors should stick

with shorter terms. For investors with a slightly higher risk toler-ance, certain short term bond funds have the potential to offer value. Most of these products offer exposure to short-term corporate bonds that

generate higher income than comparable money market funds. Although these bond funds are on the lower risk side of the investment spectrum, investors should be aware that they are still subject to price fluctuations. Cash is a short-term tool and eventually will need to be deployed into higher returning invest-ments. For those with a higher risk tolerance, div-idend-paying investments could be the next stop. They are more tax effi-cient; they offer an attrac-tive income; and they tend to be defensive in nature.

Cash should never be idle and there are many solutions available for investors wanting to put it to work. It makes sense to shop around for the best products.

Mmm! There’s nothing quite like the delicious taste of that first home-grown, sun-ripened toma-to of the season, is there? With the fresh flavor bursting in your mouth, you also have wonderful nutrients flooding your body! One medium tomato contains only about 25 calories, but supplies all-important B Vitamins, folate and potassium, along with about 1400 I.U.’s of Vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene. It also provides about 20 mgs. of Vitamin C, which is concentrated in the jellylike substance that surrounds the seeds. Ripe and unripe toma-toes are nutritionally sim-ilar, except that red toma-toes contain up to 4 times as much beta carotene as green ones.

RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS

Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and beta-caro-tene. Lycopene is an anti-oxidant carotenoid which has many health benefits, including reduced risk of cancer, exercise-induced asthma and atherosclero-sis. It gives tomatoes their red color and helps pro-tect against cancer-caus-ing free radical cell dam-age that can occur when the body uses oxygen. Researchers believe that lycopene is a natural can-cer-fighting agent. Eating tomatoes regularly may possibly reduce the risk of prostate cancer for men. Harvard studies showed that men who consumed tomatoes or tomato-based foods at least FOUR times weekly had a 20 PER CENT lower risk of pros-tate cancer than those who avoided tomatoes. Men who ate tomatoes 10 times weekly reduced their risk by almost half! Lycopene is also pres-ent in apricots, pink grapefruit, guava, papaya and watermelon.

ADD OLIVE OIL If you add a little healthy fat to your meal when you eat tomatoes, your body will be more likely to absorb their won-derful nutrients. Extra-virgin olive oil has been used for centuries in Mediterranean cultures, and rightly so, since it is an excellent choice for this purpose. Olive oil provides major health benefits, due to its many heart-protecting nutri-ents. Many studies have confirmed that olive oil can reduce the risk of some cancers, help to reduce LDL cholesterol and improve rheumatoid arthritis. Researchers also specu-late that cooking releases the fat-soluble lycopene from the tomatoes’ cells, and that a bit of oil, such as that in pizza or tomato sauce, intensifies the pro-tective effect. However, olive oil should not be used for frying, since it can be damaged by high temperatures.

TOMATO JUICE

Juicing fresh tomatoes retains its nutrients and breaks them down into smaller particles. This is why juicing is so benefi-cial! Tomato juice has an alkaline reaction when it is digested without starch-es or sugars being pres-ent. However, if it is con-sumed at the same meal as starches or sugars, then the reaction is defi-nitely acidic.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Tomatoes, like potatoes, sweet peppers and egg-plants, belong to the nightshade family. Solanines, toxic substanc-es that are present in minute quantities in all members of the night-shade family, may trigger headaches in susceptible people. Tomatoes are a

common cause of aller-gies. Also, people with arthritic pain may not improve significantly unless they avoid the nightshade family of foods.

LOCAL STUDENT AWARDED – Springside’s Shawna Turner was one of just 12 in Canada to be selected to receive a special scholarship to further her career into the fu-ture. Turner, who has been involved with the light horse project at the Yorkton 4-H Light Horse Club for the past 11 years, was recently awarded a $2,500 scholarship to help her to pursue her dream of becoming a farm fi nancial manager. Scholarships are presented annually by through the TD Bank 4-H Scholarship initiative to deserving students who will become Canada’s agriculture leaders of tomorrow. Provincial athletics commission approved: changes coming The Government of Sask-atchewan has approved the establishment of a provincial athletics commission and is taking the necessary steps to have the commission running by the summer of 2014. This commission will hold the au-thority to sanction profession-al combative sports, including mixed martial arts and boxing events. Bill S-209, a bill to amend section 83 of the Criminal Code to legalize the sport of mixed martial arts across Canada was passed in June 2013. This

amendment makes profession-al boxing and mixed martial arts contests legal in Canada when they have the authoriza-tion of an athletics commission created by provincial legisla-tion. The legislation will pro-vide protocols for license ap-plications, event permits and the terms and conditions of an event. It will ensure that competitors participate in ap-propriate pre-fi ght medical testing, such as concussion screening, blood tests and eye exams. It will ensure that

qualifi ed medical staff and event offi cials are hired, that promoters and competitors have the proper licenses, and that promoters have suitable liability insurance. The com-mission will be responsible for tracking competitors’ fi ghting history and will ensure safety protocols are enforced.If the government is involved, a consistent standard of qualifi -cations, rules, regulations and safety protocols for all partici-pants and offi cials across the province, through a uniform li-censing framework, will occur.

This will ensure the safety of the athletes. Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Kevin Doherty says, “A provincial athletics commis-sion will help ensure the safety of everyone involved in profes-sional combative sport com-petitions. After the amended changes to the Criminal Code were made in June, our govern-ment received the clarifi cation we needed to move forward on this.” The amendments to the Criminal Code also impact am-ateur combative sports. The

province is entering into an agreement with the Saskatch-ewan Martial Arts Association (SMAA). The SMAA will sanc-tion and oversee amateur com-bative sports including mixed martial arts, kickboxing, modi-fi ed muay thai and full-contact karate. To qualify for sanctioning, events must be hosted by a member of the SMAA. Com-petitors cannot be paid and they must be 18 or older. The SMAA will start sanc-tioning amateur combative sporting events immediately.
