TNN Ahmedabad: People mill- ing around in a designated swine flu ward doesn’t sound like there is much isolation or safety from further infec- tion in the place. But this is what it is like in the ‘D9 isola- tion ward’ at Civil Hospital in Asarwa which is overflow- ing with swine flu cases — suspected as well as con- firmed. Most of the patients are frantically looking for a bed after being turned away from one private hospital or another in the city. Throwing all precaution to the wind, relatives and strangers manage to get into the D9 ward which is sup- posed to be a restricted area. There is no one to stop them. TOI entered the so called “quarantined ward” three times without being ques- tioned. Inside doctors and paramedics have their hands full managing swine flu patients and suspected cases. However, they have to calm down, at the same time, angry and anxious relatives who demand immediate at- tention. In the process the deadly virus is free to infect even the unwary. Some rela- tives even fought with secu- rity staff for free access to the ward. The scene inside is trau- matizing. Why aren’t the pa- ramedics and doctors wear- ing aprons, protective gear and gloves? Why are rela- tives of H1N1 patients not wearing masks all the time? Why are suspected patients being examined in a clogged alley of the isolation ward? “We doctors are stretched. Why can’t private hospitals take off some of our burden? Even 200-bed private hospitals have just a few beds in isolation wards. The 2015 outbreak of swine flu is the worst in five years but private hospitals have failed to co-operate,” said a senior doctor attending to patients in the swine flu ward. Witnessing this scene in the ward no one would be- lieve that the state has al- ready seen five pandemic years since the deadly swine flu first surfaced in 2009. The Union ministry of health has laid down a 17-page Clin- ical Management Protocol which mandates a protective gear for all those who enter the quarantined ward. Also, as in 2009, the state govern- ment is yet to declare an epi- demic and force private hos- pitals to throw open more isolation facilities. Swine flu director of Guj- arat, Dr Kamlesh Upadhyay, said that doctors of public hospitals are doing their best. “But it would reduce the huge pressure on public hospitals if private hospi- tals run swine flu OPDs and even increase their isolation bed capacities,” said Upad- hyay. At swine flu OPD which is at a stone’s throw from the isolation ward, the attend- ing doctors had run out of protective masks and were using old ones. A patient told TOI that he refused to wear a mask as he would not be able to get an auto-rickshaw. The city's private hospi- tals can accommodate 256 swine flu patients as of now. Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad — the largest referral centre in West India — had started with 30 beds but it has stead- ily expanded its capacity to 165 isolation beds for swine flu patients. Such an in- crease is not visible in pri- vate hospitals of the city. According to a complaint by Gopal Bharwad, a resident of Ghatlodia and working as a driver with BRTS bus, he was passing from AMC swimming pool at 9.15pm on Saturday when a teenager came on the BRTS track. He stopped the bus but the bus hit the boy. Soon after the in- cident, nearby resident’s ghea- roed the bus and started pelting stones. A group led by Utsav Leuva and Akash Makwana roughed him up as he fled the spot and reported the incident to police. As per his complaint, the group incurred damages worth Rs 50,000 to the bus. BRTS bus vandalized TIMES NEWS NETWORK Ahmedabad: In the next two days, Gujarat’s swine flu numbers would breach the 2010 figures thus mak- ing 2015 the worst swine flu attack in the state’s histo- ry. Over the past 46 days Gujarat has already regis- tered 1,674 cases and re- corded 144 deaths. In 2010 the state regis- tered 1,682 swine flu cases and recorded 363 deaths. One wonders what the deadly disease has in store in the upcoming monsoon and winter. On Sunday, the state registered 152 new cases and eight deaths, one of the highest in recent times. While interacting with presspersons at the Sabar- mati marathon venue, chief minister Anandiben Patel insisted that the gov- ernment had no plans to formally declare an epi- demic. Neighbouring Rajas- than on the contrary has declared an epidemic and forced even private hospi- tals to throw open their fa- cilities three days ago. Guj- arat and Rajasthan account for 50% of the country’s swine flu cases. The only glimmer of hope, however, being that 615 patients have been cured of the disease of the 1,674 cases registered so far in state. Ahmedabad city regis- tered 28 new cases of the to- tal 51 cases and two deaths till Sunday taking the total count to 412 and death toll to 28 since January 1. In Ahmedabad more than 3.71 lakh houses were surveyed for fever and cough cases. TIMES NEWS NETWORK Vadodara: Tandalja is the worst-hit area in the city when it comes to swine flu. As many as 15 cases have been reported from the area within 45 days. The data collected by Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on prevalence of swine flu for the period between January 1 and Febru- ary 14 has identified three areas in the city where swine flu is more widespread. After Tandalja, Gorwa-Subhanpura and Sama are the areas which have registered high number of swine flu cases this year. Ironically, densely populated old city areas have one of the lowest number of swine flu cases. VMC had conduct- ed an extensive surveillance of the city that ended on Friday. “The surveillance was aimed at identify- ing high risk areas in the city to ensure ade- quate preventive measures.
