Picture: MICHAEL FRANCHI Alison Bevege TERRITORY mother-in-laws are often far away, thanks to the transient population. Thairon Margetic, 35, said his partner Caroline Papilloud’s mum is not just ‘‘down south’’ but in Switzerland. ‘‘We get on fine even though we never see each other, live in separ- ate continents and she speaks another language,’’ he said. ‘‘Every time I see her, every few years, she’s very nice to me.’’ Mr Margetic and Ms Papilloud, 27, say they are very happy. But they could be missing out big time. It turns out the best mother-in- law is not the one that lives the furthest away. Because, while stereotypically they’re difficult, judgmental and troublesome, seeing your mother- in-law is good for you. Contact with both your mother and your mother-in-law once a week will make you happier than other married people, a survey into wellbeing by Deakin Univers- ity, in Victoria, has found. Those who see only their mother once a week are less happy and those who see only their mother- in-law have a slightly lower level of happiness. Researcher Melissa Weinberg said the counterintuitive finding is really pointing to the importance of relationships in happiness and wellbeing. ‘‘It reflects the importance of having a close family unit,’’ she said. Those who had frequent contact with both a mother and mother- in-law were benefiting from two sources of close maternal support, two people who could help around the house and with the children, she said. ‘‘This shows that people with a balanced family life are likely to have higher well-being than those who are seeing more of one side of the family and less of the other,’’ Ms Weinberg said. If a relationship was maintained with only one mother figure ‘‘then there is an imbalance in the fam- ily, perhaps with disappointment or even resentment by the non- connected partner,’’ the study has found. The Australian Unity Wellbeing Index found those who had weekly contact with their mother and mother-in-law had a well-being score of 78.7, well above the normal range of 73.7 and 76.7. Those in frequent contact with their mother had a wellbeing score of 74 out of 100 and those who saw their mother-in-law scored 73.1. Those who rarely or never saw either their mother and mother- in-law had a below average wellbe- ing score of 71.6. The telephone survey of 2000 Australians found that overall personal wellbeing, a measure of people’s satisfaction with their lives, had remained virtually un- changed since late 2011. For the first time the survey asked people how they would spend two hours a week to do anything they wanted. Most people chose to spend it with their family (12 per cent) while the smallest proportion chose sex (0.2 per cent). The survey also found that men wanted to spend their time surf- ing, golfing and fishing. On the other hand women wanted to spend their two hours reading.

Happiness is a warm mother-in-law

Caroline Papilloud and Thairon Margetic say their mother-in-laws make them happy. Picture: MICHAEL FRANCHI

TERRITORY mother-in-laws are

often far away, thanks to the

transient population.

Thairon Margetic, 35, said hispartner Caroline Papilloud’s mumis not just ‘‘down south’’ but inSwitzerland.

‘‘We get on fine even though wenever see each other, live in separ-ate continents and she speaksanother language,’’ he said.

‘‘Every time I see her, every fewyears, she’s very nice to me.’’

Mr Margetic and Ms Papilloud,27, say they are very happy.

But they could be missing outbig time.

It turns out the best mother-in-law is not the one that lives thefurthest away.

Because, while stereotypicallythey’re difficult, judgmental andtroublesome, seeing your mother-in-law is good for you.

Contact with both your motherand your mother-in-law once aweek will make you happier thanother married people, a surveyinto wellbeing by Deakin Univers-ity, in Victoria, has found.

Those who see only their motheronce a week are less happy andthose who see only their mother-in-law have a slightly lower level ofhappiness.

Researcher Melissa Weinbergsaid the counterintuitive finding isreally pointing to the importanceof relationships in happiness andwellbeing.

‘‘It reflects the importance of

having a close family unit,’’ she

said.

Those who had frequent contactwith both a mother and mother-in-law were benefiting from twosources of close maternal support, two people who could help aroundthe house and with the children, she said.

‘‘This shows that people with abalanced family life are likely tohave higher well-being than thosewho are seeing more of one side ofthe family and less of the other,’’Ms Weinberg said.

If a relationship was maintainedwith only one mother figure ‘‘thenthere is an imbalance in the fam-ily, perhaps with disappointmentor even resentment by the non-connected partner,’’ the study hasfound.

The Australian Unity WellbeingIndex found those who had weeklycontact with their mother andmother-in-law had a well-beingscore of 78.7, well above the normalrange of 73.7 and 76.7.

Those in frequent contact withtheir mother had a wellbeing scoreof 74 out of 100 and those who sawtheir mother-in-law scored 73.1.

Those who rarely or never saweither their mother and mother-in-law had a below average wellbe-ing score of 71.6.

The telephone survey of 2000Australians found that overallpersonal wellbeing, a measure ofpeople’s satisfaction with theirlives, had remained virtually un-changed since late 2011.

For the first time the survey

asked people how they wouldspend two hours a week to doanything they wanted.

Most people chose to spend it

with their family (12 per cent)while the smallest proportionchose sex (0.2 per cent).

The survey also found that men

wanted to spend their time surf-ing, golfing and fishing.

On the other hand womenwanted to spend their two hoursreading.
