Exhibit honors Black History Month and the contributions ofAfrican American health care professionals

Black History Celebration, an exhibit currently on display in the lecture hall foyer, honors the manyaccomplishments of African-American health care professionals past and present.

Patricia L. Brown, Special Collections Library Assistant, researched and mounted the four-panel display forthe first time in 2005. It features early medical schools and hospitals, historical and contemporary notables, and faculty from the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. Originally, the exhibit was sponsored by theDepartment of Pathology, The Libraries and the Friends of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library. Dr.Robert L. Reddick, Chair of the Department of Pathology, acted as consultant.

Members of the Student National Medical Association (http://www.snma.org/) participated in this new,

updated exhibit, on view in the lecture hall foyer through February, in observance of Black History Month. They are Marcus Emebo (MS3), Yvonne Watkins (MS2,) Lauren Wiggins (MS2), Allison Mitchell (MS2),Kimberly Onyirioha (MS2), Jessica Brown (MS2), Yvonne Otieno (MS2), Dana Brown (MS1), Uche Osadebe(MS1), and Stephanie G. Opusunju (MS1).

De Symmetria Partium in Rectis Formis Humanorum Corporumby

    Albrecht Drer:

A featured resource of the P.I. Nixon Medical Historical Library

Albrecht Drer, German painter, mathematician and art theorist, was among thefirst of the great Renaissance artists to study anatomy. From 1507 until hisdeath in 1528 he took meticulous measurements and made detailed notes for his

    Four Books on Human Proportions.

Although Drer never met Leonardo da Vinci during his travels in Italy, herespected the artists emphasis on mathematical proportions and returned toGermany determined to study in earnest. Works by Euclid, Vitruvius and otherscientific authors on proportion and perspective became Drers theoretical basisfor his new descriptive geometry.

De Symmetria (books on the normal proportions of the parts of the human form)represents full-length male and female figures of all ages and body types, embodying the first application of anthropometry to aesthetics. Also technicallyinnovative, it contains the first attempts to represent chiaroscuro in woodengraving by means of cross-hatching.

De Symmetriawas published in Nuremburg in 1532. The P.I. Nixon MedicalHistorical Library owns a first edition copy of the work.

Book notes: NPRs Best Memoirs of 2009

The first,Stitches,by Caldecott award- winning childrens illustrator David Small, is a

reflection on his diagnosis, at age 14, with throat cancer.

Smalls story, told in words and pictures, is a testament to his struggle to regain his

    voice after several traumatic losses.

Among the books on National Public Radios recently published list,Best Memoirs of 2009 are two

addressing themes that may be of interest to health care providers.

Also on the NPR list of best memoirs of 2009 is Diana Athills memoir,Somewhere

    Towards the End.

A life-long editor of other peoples books, (she worked with Philip Roth, John Updike,

Norman Mailer, Jean Rhys, and V. S. Naipaul) Diana Athill did not discover her own

writers voice until she was in her eighties. Her first book,Stet, was also a memoir.

FromSomewhere Towards the End: ...book after book has been written about

being young, and even more of them about the elaborate and testing experiences thatcluster round procreation, but there is not much on record about falling away...

NPRs complete list of Best Memoirs of 2009 can be found at
