A RELUCTANT FAREWELL

Seated left to right, David and Annie Fletcher, Peter and Pam Symonds. Standing are James and Suzie, Mark and Louise Symonds – and in front are the grandchildren – Emily, Dan, Tom and Rach. This picture was taken in September 2009.

church, which dates from the 11th century and is situated the village of East Horsley in Surrey where Peter and I have lived for most of our married life. We will then walk to the Great Hall in Horsley Towers, which dates back to 1820. It is the ancestral home of the Lovelace family and is situated in 70 acres of picturesque parkland. Of interest is Ada, Countess of Lovelace, who was Lord Byron's daughter and whom many consider described the first ever computer program. With love and best wishes to you all. A SURPRISE VISIT IN AUGUST

Philip Lord flew across the big Atlantic pond for an all too brief visit. In this shot, Phyllis and Mark are happy to see Philip.

Needless to mention how excited I was to have Philip in my home. Could not help but

remember the day Mark was born at the Nuttall Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. Philip was just a couple of years old and there’s a picture somewhere of him anxious to peek through the nursery to see his new cousin.

One of the most exciting moments of Philip’s visit was seeing one of my grandchildren bond with him. Pat Lord shares with me the wish that all the young people in the extended Dougall family could get acquainted.

The second most exciting moments were to see Philip enjoy a performance of the Grand Ol’ Opry.

Mark and Philip played tourists in Music City USA – Nashville, Tennessee.

On his return, Philip kept his promise by sending pictures of Victoria and their daughters, Leah, Hannah and their ginger pet. Family lives in Worthing, England.

MONTEGO BAY FAMILY

Kaitlyn and Nicholas are the children of Jerry and Sasha Brown – and grandchildren of Christine Rerrie (nee Dougall). Born in Canada, the family is now living in Montego Bay, Jamaica. I am anxious to meet these youngsters when I visit Jamaica this coming February.

ANOTHER FAREWELL

I often feel we do not know our family ties well enough – and the passing of Austin Maxwell drove home that point loud and clear. For many years, we have been in touch with Ann Turner, the daughter of a Rerrie cousin, Ken Maxwell, linked via Eliza Belle Rerrie Dougall, my great grandmother, and relic of James Dougall. We

just did not know about Ann’s sibling. The socialist turn of politics in Jamaica starting in the mid 1960’s sent running folks far and wide. That, in part, helps explainAnn being in British Columbia, and her brother, Austin, in Toronto. He was 65 when he died August 27 after complications that began with the flu.

Our condolences go to the family of Austin Maxwell – to whom we need to reach out – to Ann and her mom in Aldergrove, BC, and their aunt, Doreen Maxwell in Victoria, BC.

PHILIPPA ROXBURGH Last June, Philippa took her break from the hectic pace she keeps up in the insurance field out of Miami. Here is what she wrote: “Did the Baltic Cruise 15 days starting from Dover June 2nd and had the most fabulous time. The countries we visited and the tours we did were truly amazing. I went with a longtime friend (over 30 years) Harvey Tabin, who worked with me at Prudential and over the years were close friends and associates. He lost his wife to cancer some 2 years ago. He lives in Palm City - 2 hrs north of me, so we get together on the weekends here or there. Good friends.

“We had two days in England staying with Chris and Laura Heyliger in Wokingham. They took us to Henley the afternoon we arrived and the weather could not have been better, Chris rented a small boat and took us on the river past where the Great Britain Ladies Olympic team were practicing, so exciting. The next day, they had a lunch party and we were able to meet up with several longtime friends. Again the weather was marvelous and we had a superb day.

“We returned to Miami the next day and have been settling back to work etc. Have so enjoyed

the Olympics and have cheered for Jamaica and of course the UK and the USA. Sorry its all over.

“Starting to get busy for me with my meetings and benefit fairs, but I do enjoy the travel (although now its just Florida) This week its two days at a resort in Key Largo, not all bad!”

CATCHING UP WITH THE HICKS Jenny and I have been chatting via e-mail about her retirement in Toronto, and the preparations she is making to return to Jamaica before Christmas. In fact, her parents, Ken and Isabelle Hicks told me that I would get to see Jenny when I stay with them at Villa Pimento in February. I also got a note from Ann Hicks that her husband, Paul Lake, now had a new job in Jamaica, and the couple had moved to Kingston from Dublin, Ireland. Then, I learned Michael Hicks had dengue fever. Later, I heard he was having heart problems. Jenny Hicks did yeoman service keeping me informed. She wrote, “Michael is doing great and now back in MoBay. He had 4 stents put in, and is still recovering as you can imagine. His daughters, Ann and Siobhan, also went to be with him, as did Michael's friend, Dr. Margaret, a pediatrician in Miami. Alex went to see them all at Ann and Paul's apartment.

Michael blames the local authorities for not spraying to prevent mosquitoes spreading disease. Take it easy, Michael – remember, I am looking forward to seeing you at Runaway Bay and or Montego Bay.

REMEMBERING JACK AND THE BEAN STALK

Penny Sylvester is sharing this picture of her grand aunt, Peggy Dougall. Peggy was the adopted daughter of James Anthony Dougall and his second wife, Amy Clerk. I was 11 or 12 years old when I saw Aunt Peggy perform as

Jack in the annual Christmas pantomime staged at the Ward Theater in Kingston – this was

about 1943. After World War II, Peggy moved to London and her stage interests brought her to the Old Vic. Years later, Peggy introduced Penny’s mom (Peggy’s niece), Jennifer Bourke, to her husband. I remember Jennifer fondly as a most beautiful teen ager when we were growing up in Jamaica. Penny told me that she inherited Peggy’s photo album and she is searching for some pictures that show her as a child with her parents, James Anthony and Amy.

OLD WEATHER NEWS When the television news exclaims extreme weather like tornadoes in areas where we have family, I become anxious – so I was relieved when Ken Shaw wrote me from Brooklyn in mid September, “No damage here. There were two weak tornadoes - Canarsie and Breezy Point. The storm brought two inches of rain in less than an hour and wind. The storm caught the Weather Service by surprise since they posted the severe storm warnings 1/2 hour after the storm passed. All else OK.”

HART SIDE OF FAMILY REVISITED Grandmother Julia Hart Dougall would probably be delighted to know how the internet and e-mail helps connect members of her family.. I spotted the name Gonsalves on a message I had been forwarded – and am always curious about names that link to my family, I wrote this George Gonsalves in Canada. I mentioned a niece of my grandmother, Julia Hart, had married a Gonsalves and lived in Antigua. She was Aunt Louise Golsalves (nee Harris) – and had two offspring –were married in Jamaica and went to Antigua around 1912. My aunt Louise Gonsalves and my uncle, Stanley were born in Jamaica. My father, George Vincent Gonsalves, was born in Antigua in 1914.” As Walt Disney wrote, “It’s a small Greta and Keith –Louise was married to Arthur Gonsalves. Here is what George wrote, “My grandfather, George Reginald Gonsalves, was Uncle Arthur's brother and was married to Adele Harris, a cousin of Louse Winchester Harris. Adele and Reggie, small world.”

DEBBIE DOUGALL’S ADVENTURE Debbie Dougall wrote early September from Victoria, BC that she was home nursing some aches and pains that happen “as we mature.” She has quite a tale to tell. “I am so glad you saw Philip Lord. When he was living in Jamaica during the 80's I saw a lot of the family. Victoria was new to Jamaica and the girls were both toddlers. I tried to see them a few years ago when I visited England but unfortunately our schedules did not mesh that day. I start back at work on Sunday part time with Swarovski and then plan to look into Jockey Person2Person. Home based, they are known for under- garments but started the clothing line 3 years ago.

Christine (her sister) is fine, Kate Brown was up from Jamaica visiting for 10 days.So nice to have her with us. My grandson, Kaiden was especially happy to have her here. Zoe (her younger daughter) is now working two jobs and going to school to upgrade her Biology and take Chemistry 12 which she needs to get into the Nursing program. Amanda (Kaiden’s mom) is working for an investment company and really enjoys it. She is taking the Canadian Securities course which will be helpful in her job. Steve (Amanda's boyfriend) has been a great influence on Kaiden. (He is surrounded by people who love and care for him.) Kiaden starts grade 2 in September and has just finished his swimming level 2. So we are all doing great.

I celebrated my birthday in Vancouver with Christine, Lisa (Christine’s daughter),Jenny Hillier (their first cousin) and Eric and (Lisa's boyfriend). The play we attended was fantastic. It was a Jamaica story - tf it ever comes to a city near you make sure to go. Debra is a one person show and talented. It is going to be made into a movie so at least keep a look out for that. I understand the story is 95% true and is about the Manley era, CIA and life in Jamaica.” (This is so important in the lives of the Jamaica Dougalls because of the diaspora Manley caused with his socialism).

“So, now on to my six-month adventure! I think this has always been something I needed to do. Dad (Allie Dougall) always had a boat which I was never too fond of as I get seasick. In 1966 we had a vacation to England on the S.S Cartago, a Dutch banana boat. We left Port Antonio with only one other family, the Stobbarts. John is now a well known artist and

does wonderful maritime paintings. (http://www.stobart.com/profile.html)

In September 2011, Phyllis and Dick visited the Victoria BC family – this was at Point-No Point, BC – left to right – Phyllis, Jen Hellier, Debbie Dougall, Christine Rerrie, Dick Dougall

The trip across the Atlantic and the time in England is one of my best vacation memories. After the first day of not feeling well, I was fine for the remainder of the trip. Mr.Stobbart was travelling with his family so I had 2 playmates and the crew found us some rope for skipping and a bucket of

water to splash around. When we arrived in Southampton we were met by Aunty Sheila and Uncle Robbie Robinson. We did a house exchange so shortly after our arrival

they left for Jamaica and stayed at Wild Pine. Some of my best memories that my nine year old mind can remember are visiting the old stately homes. Luton Hoo, Hatfield House, and Knebworth House. We had just finished learning about Elizabeth I and the Tudors at school so I just loved these houses. Dad took us to the zoo which coming from Jamaica and only having ever been to Hope Botanical Gardens/Zoo, this was certainly tops for me. Lots of monkeys and zebras and many animals I had never seen..The

first time Mom, Christine and I went to the supermarket after the check out, we had to carry the groceries to the car. (Growing up in Jamaica, we never before had done this.) Mom asked for some boxes and we packed the groceries in then lifted the boxes on to our heads and walked out of the store while people looked on. With that as emotional background, here is the adventure story. I joined the crew of Sapphire Princess in February 2012 and spent a week sailing from Los Angeles to Mexico for training. I was then trans shipped to the Caribbean Princess out of San Juan to do both the Southern and Eastern Caribbean. Such a treat for me having lived in St.Lucia for a while and having friends still on the island, I was able to reconnect with them. Also, I was able to see cousin “Chef” William Munn for a few minutes as he was at work. I spent two months in the Caribbean but will write again and tell you about the islands and send some photos.

SKYPE PENDING

Back in August, I had a short note from Linda Dougall Thompson, my third cousin, in Trigg, Western Australia. She wrote, “I'm the lazy one I'm afraid. Life is just so busy. Dad is still going well and I'll arrange for you both to get together via Skype soon.” I suspect her dad, Frank Dougall, is our senior Dougall maybe six years my senior. His granddad was the pioneer, William Dougall, so my dad and he were second cousins. I keep wishing they could have known each other. You may remember Frank is our relative who sent me a letter written by our South African Dinwoodie cousin to his dad, Thomas Waddell Dougall, to commemorate their friendship in

Glasgow 50 years prior. In this letter, Sam Dinwoodie mentions his Jamaica Dougall cousins, Percy, Belle, Willy (my dad) and Kathleen.

MORE SKYPE PENDING From the Melbourne area, Lorna Marie Kolac wrote, “I must apologize - it must seem as if I have totally forgotten you and our Dougall roots. I haven't at all, I have just had a busy year and every day seems to throw up something new that demands attention. I do hope all is fine in Tennessee with you and your family. I have only had time to briefly read the last newsletter but hope to catch up with it all in the next few days. We are very lucky to have you! You put so much time and effort into keeping the lines of communication open. It is a huge task but very much appreciated. [Thanks Lorna] Meg (Lorna’s younger daughter who designs clothes) has her ticket to London - leaving here on the 14th September. (My apologies for not sharing this in a timely fashion with our English cousins) She's got fashion friends that have offered her couches and floors to sleep on when she's there and she seems happy with the arrangements. She'll only be in London for about a week, then she's off to Madrid, Paris and Belgium! Xani's (Lorna’s elder daughter and last newsletter you had links to some of her videos) in the middle of recording the next album and I'm glad she sent you a link to her video - at least one of our family is keeping you in the loop! I need to be in touch with all my cousins to try to organize another catch up - but it isn't easy and my email energies are a bit low at the moment. I haven't heard from any of them so I'm hoping they're still interested. Hopefully one or more of them have been in touch with you. (Lorna – they are on the mailing list for this newsletter, so hopefully Joan and all the others will take this hint). I'll be back on Skype when Meg's overseas, so maybe we can have a chat then. I tend to shut it all down and put it away when the family's in the same state. Otherwise I get notifications

every time somebody in the house is using it - which makes me feel a bit intrusive in their lives!! (My PC is usually on all the time so it may look like I am on Skype 24/7 – understand). I've been promising to write up a couple of books - with photos - about the girls' early years for them. I've been trying to get them done for a couple of years now. I really need to get back to them and I'm hoping to grab as much time as I can to get them done. So if you don't hear much from me - that's what I'm doing. But that's just between you and me - I'm not a writer - and if I have people asking me how the books are going I'll have to think up some lame excuses!! And the way things are in this family I'll probably be ninety before they're finished. Anyway, Dick, that's about it for now. While I'm on a roll, I'll send off an email to the cousins and let you know what transpires. Take care, Lorna

HISTORY BEING WRITTEN

From Dunedin, New Zealand, I get word that cousin Donald Cochrane is busy on histories of the Dyke family (our common Dougall ancestor, Thomas, was married to Mary Dykes, so we are all her descendants) – the Watson family, and his Cochrane forbears. He has asked some of us to proofread the Dykes history, and I know Sarah Ward and Norman Hall have had a go at it – and I am doing my best to work on an index for it. Some of Donald’s early effort on this subject appears in the Addendum to the Narrative of the Dougalls – and that came out about 2005 – and is one of the several family history PDFs I maintain on the WORDPRESS BLOG. Here is the link to it – remember, the password to these documents is llaguod and is so protected to help preserve some measure of privacy for our family. http://dickdougall.wordpress.com/2011/10/22/introduction-to-dougall-family-history/ Donald discovered a certificate of death for Helen Dougall – his great, great grandmother and my great grand aunt. It seems that Helen was despondent after her husband, John

Watson, died on October 16, 1881 after three years suffering a softening of the brain. She committed suicide on May 8th, 1882. The Watson family had remained in the Draffin Marshall farming area where Helen’s father, Thomas, and her brothers and sisters were raised near Lesmahagow. The Watson offspring wound up near Invercargill in New Zealand. Sarah Ward wrote from Australia, “I was thinking of you! I asked Donald for a copy of his work and he asked me to check it for him, but I haven't even had time to read any further than the second chapter! It looks great what I have read of it. My reintro-duction to study was a bit of a rude shock and it took me a bit of time to get used to different and very prescriptive ways of doing things (from when I last did this sort of stuff). However I managed to finish my first two subjects with a credit and distinction so I'm feeling pretty happy with myself! In the meantime my husband, John, has had three changes in jobs and some of that has been very chaotic and disruptive! He is at the first day of the third job today, so hopefully this will be a more settled and sensible routine.... In the meantime the usual goings on continue (my cousin once described being with my family as living life on the central railway platform of a large city!). I redesigned our business website on the internet

www.qliteracy.com as our old one was dysfunctional! This website sells hard copy of our books but we are also working on one that will sell the same books as e-books. (Great idea, Sarah – my 6-year old grandson has a Kindle Fire, and his sister, Ryleigh (9) has in iPAD) My third daughter had a fantastic idea of conducting a garage sale at her place and we've been sorting out and labeling all manner of items we want rid of, and then the following weekend we are camping at Mt Tamborine - hopefully that will be a relaxing weekend! My sister surprised the family with the news that she has another child on the way, her third due in March 2013 - she already has two girls,. So

life is never dull here. I will try to be a little more in touch but realize that it won't be long before I need to sit down and write my normal Christmas epistle (I call it that because it's a whole lot longer and in depth than a letter!) Lots of love to you and Phyllis as always, Sarah & family.

DOUGALLS OF TENNESSEE Out of time, out of room – Scott and Patricia have taken Anne-Marie to Disneyworld. Her 4th birthday comes up close to the USA Thanksgiving. Mark and Regan are beside themselves moving to a new home 30 minutes further away from us. Ryleigh and Destin brought home excellent report cards from school. I have just led a photowalk in Historic Franklin, one location of over 1100 around the globe – each location picks a winner from its group (max 50 people – and we had 46) – and then each of these winners competes for some grand photography prizes. This is my fourth time leading such a group – it is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. We’ll feature our winner and a “court of honor” of the next 14 images at a month long exhibit at our local county library. I enjoy doing it. ;)

HURRICANE HITTING JAMAICA FROM SOUTH

When we see news headlines like this we become concerned for family members who might be in range of the danger. By e-mail this afternoon I have asked Alex to give us a report as soon as the all clear is given – and I shall pass this along as a separate message to the extended family.

Dear Pam, James, Mark and families, and also to Ann, Doreen and the Austin Maxwell family – please accept our condolences for the loss of your loved one, Peter Symonds and Austin Maxwell. Dick Dougall and the extended Dougall family.

Ryleigh has fun with a class mate who lives in our area. They love dramatics.
