NOMADS-On a Mission Active in Divine Service is an outreach ministry through the

United Methodist Church. This ministry offers tons of service projects all around the

I love this time of year! As many of you, I’m a big football fan. It’s fun to hear the conversations as we discuss the results of the latest rivalry game. For the most part, each of these games develops a predictable pattern of huddle/play, huddle/play.

What is it that goes on in the huddle? The players encourage one another to keep playing hard, they talk about what they see happening in the game. They get a word from the coach, through the quarterback as to what the next play will be. If you talk to any football player, none of them would say that the huddle is the same as running the play. Running the play is what happens when the team breaks the huddle. What happens outside the huddle is the real purpose of the game. A football game is not won based on how well a team huddles, but on how well the team plays outside the huddle.

Our time together in worship is kind of like the huddle. We encourage one another, look at how things are going in our lives outside of church, and we get a word from God about how to live our lives out in the world. But weekend worship is not our mission! This isn’t your same old women’s group – they aren’t sitting around sewing buttons - this is EDGEWATER WOMEN!

According to their current president, Carol Weida, Edgewater Women are fresh, exciting, and on the move – with lots going on! They are proud to boast that they have 28 new members and still counting!

On August 22nd, the Edgewater Women hosted the Back to School Celebration, which included a great lunch, an amazing sand art meditation with music, and lots and lots of female fellowship!

School supplies and backpacks were donated through this event. Through those donations our congregation was able to fill 57 backpacks with various school supplies and distribute them throughout seven different Port Charlotte and North Port schools. The report is that those schools were very appreciative and relayed the fact that due to the current economy, they really look forward to our church doing this event again next year.

In the meantime, be sure to mark your calendars so you don’t miss the next event – the Winter Festival Celebration on December 5th from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Edgewater. To find out more about this event, be sure to stay tuned to the December/January issue!

Praise Team leader Rob Rafter says “it’s like an undeserving gift from God to be

able to be used in such a powerful way here at Edgewater.” Playing guitar was

never much of a part of Rob’s life until God needed to use him here. Eleven years

ago he came to this church to watch his kids sing, and his daughter told the

band leader, “my daddy can sing real good, and wants to join the Praise Team.”

He sang up until the entire Praise Team resigned three months later. The

pastor at the time asked him if he could play. Since he had only played for fun

back in high school, you can imagine his reluctance. “And besides,” he said, “I don’t even own a guitar.” Pastor

handed him one and replied, “You do now.” We have been blessed with his talents ever since.

Rob is active in other ways as well. He has been on youth mission trips to the Bahamas and Belize.

He is also a part of the Worship Development Team, which designs the music around Pastor Dan’s sermons

and then puts it all together along with set designs and other props.

Through all the years, his most memorable event was playing the song “I’m ready now” and watching

people throw their rocks with so much passion into the garbage cans-what an incredible thing to witness!

Rob concludes, “God has blessed our family since getting involved at Edgewater beyond my

imagination. I pray anybody thinking of getting involved will jump in! We all have life situations we have to deal

with, but you can feel the solid foundation of God’s presence in your life and the support of the church to get

you through those times.”

Star Wars fan Andrew Suite, along with his wife, Kelli, and two-year-old son, Cole, moved down to Florida and joined the Edgewater church family in January 2009. Andrew grew up in a great church, but it had no youth group. He couldn’t help but to feel like he was missing out on something. Now as a youth pastor, he wants to help other young adults find a place to be a part of something bigger. He has been a youth pastor for almost 4 years now. He started with his training at the Joshua Leadership Institute, which is a youth ministry training from Tent Makers. Right after his training, he started his journey as the youth pastor at Cross Wind United Methodist Church in Logansport, Indiana. During the three years he served there, 2006 to 2009, the Cross Wind youth group favorite activity was Fifth Quarter, which is an outreach ministry to the middle school and high school students of Logansport. After every home game at the local high school, Cross Wind would open up for a safe place for kids to have fun and learn about God. When asked how the Cross Wind youth group and the Edgewater youth group were different, Andrew said, “It’s kind of a ministry shock in a sense, that a lot of the kids in the youth group at Edgewater are here without their families. They are in a way the only spiritual influence in their household, while at Cross Wind almost 99% of the kids who attended youth group also attended church with their families.” Andrew thinks it is important for the youth group to remember “The youth is the church of TODAY, not just of tomorrow.”

As the Edge begins its second chapter, God continues to move in the lives of teens and their families. Summer is a great time in student ministry to do some unique things while the Edge High School Ignition and Middle School Invasion youth groups are on hiatus. June’s day camp “Merge Into God’s Story” helped students have fun growing in their faith as they also helped with VBS. “I loved Merge,” said sophomore Kristin Delaney. “I got to know so many people better, and it was fun to dig deeper into God's word.” There were also crazy games such as using a sling-shot to fire frozen chicken feet into fashionably worn sombreros and duct-taping a few lucky kids to the wall! Plans are underway in 2010 to “Merge” with the “Mission Port Charlotte” week and combine forces with other youth ministries: “Merge Into God’s Mission.” “Mission PC” in late July helped students reach out to our community in God’s love. Students lead a sidewalk Sunday school for area children, visited a retirement home, and gave out mints with a kind note in our neighborhood: “Refresh-MINT from your friends at Edgewater Church!” In addition to a Summer Bible study at the Suite’s, brave families hosted house parties to give students a chance to connect church friends with school friends. Hosts included the LassodelaVegas, Doerners, Costas, Delaneys, Coales, and Pastor Dan & Sharon Prine. Over 100 students and their family members were in attendance at the August 23 Fall Kick-Off, as High School Ignition and Middle School Invasion began again recently. The theme was “Indiana Jones: Stepping Out in Faith” and featured prizes, an Indiana Jones cake, and “The Edge” pizza from Pizza Hut. The momentum continues with a lot of new friends coming to the Edge as we look at the life of Jesus, beginning this year with a series called “Unexplainable”, exploring some of His miracles. Every 4-6 weeks we’ll offer both outreach and small group focus nights, which will help students to continue to grow deep in their faith and go wide to share the Good News. Sunday 11AM LIFE Groups began again September 13 with great leadership: Chanelle Rafter, Kelley Saunders, Otis Schubert, and Jay & Kristina Stoltzfus. Students can also look forward to “Over the Edge”- fun outreach events once a month on a Friday night, a high school retreat this fall, and a confirmation experience and retreat beginning early in 2010.

The Edge middle and high school students participated in a local summer

missions effort July 26-July 30 called Mission Port Charlotte. Students, adult

leaders, and parent volunteers visited various locations in the community to

share the love of Christ with others as a means to fulfilling our mission to help

people meet, know and serve Jesus Christ.

On Sunday, the week kicked off with a house party hosted by John, Shawn,

and Kristin Delaney. About 25 teens and adults enjoyed dinner, badminton,

volleyball, horseshoes, and Wii. The trampoline was also a huge hit as was the

jam sessions with our aspiring young musicians. The night concluded with a

water balloon toss and all got soaked!

On Monday, students and adults participated in the Great Mint Giveaway

with “mission director” for the night Andrew Suite. After a mini training on

‘Evangelism in the Streets’ and putting hundreds of stickers on the mints,

mints were distributed around the community which read: “church experiences

leave a bad taste in your mouth? Try Edgewater Church!” We canvassed

neighborhoods, parking lots, stood outside stores and restaurants and gave

out mints while spreading God’s love and asking for prayer requests.

On Tuesday, students were led by “mission directors” Susan LassodelaVega

and Leah McIntosh and visited the Royal Palms Retirement Center. Together,

students hand crafted cards and distributed them to the residents. They had

opportunities to chat with residents and share about each others’ lives. Shay

Doerner even brought Southeast Guide Dog Annie to bring smiles to the faces

of the residents.

On Wednesday, Kelley Saunders and Kati Bartlett were the “mission

directors” and with the help of many others led Sidewalk Sunday School. While

it was held on Wednesday—and indoors due to weather—teens assisted with

face painting, fun games, skits, and silly songs with about 25 kids. The kids

participated in a great lesson, offered popcorn prayers, and received numerous

prizes for answering questions and participating.

On Thursday, the great week culminated with a celebration house party

hosted by Ernesto, Susan, Ricky, and Gaby LassodelaVega. Brave enough to

host their second Edge event this summer with over 15 students in attendance,

most landed in the pool in their clothes having “forgotten their swim suits!

New Children’s Ministry Policies ~ Andrea Pye

With the growth of our church, our children’s ministry has exploded! Praise God! In order to ensure the safety of our little ones, the new children’s ministry team has met and prayed about some new policies and procedures that have taken effective September 1st. Please be sure to stop by your child’s area to receive a policy outline packet, as this article will only touch upon a few changes.

Signing your child(ren) in and out is a crucial point of safety. Only adults over 18 years of age are allowed to do this. As soon as service is over, please be sure to pick up your child in a timely manner, and don’t forget to sign out. If you choose not to have your child participate in a children’s ministry area, they must be accompanied by their parent or guardian at all times.

Snacks will always be served in the nursery, and may be served in other classrooms. Please let us know if your child has allergies. Only labeled sippy cups are allowed in nursery, and no food or drinks are allowed inside the other classrooms.

All parents of nursery age children are required to take an assigned pager and return it. This is the easiest, least disruptive way to contact the parents in case of need. If your child cannot be consoled after 15 minutes of continual crying, is being disruptive, or needs a diaper change, you will be paged to assist your child. Volunteers nor staff are permitted to change diapers or clothing of children.

We sincerely thank all the parents and adults for your cooperation. If there are any questions, feel free to contact the Director of Children’s Ministry, Brandi Walker at [email protected].

There are lots of great activities planned over the next few months, so please be sure to check

Edgewater’s website for specific dates and times.

* * * * * * * * * * This winter there will be a pageant called “The First Christmas” for children ages 3 through

high school. If you would like to volunteer or have your child participate , there will be two meetings held for more information—one for volunteers and one for participants. Be sure to check the

bulletin with specific dates and times.

The EUMC Banks for World Wide Missions have provided $8000 to build an orphanage in Pakistan through International Cooperating Ministries. That project was completed in April.
