NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2014 Changes afoot? in short Brad Earlier this year a series of farmer meetings were held around the country by Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS). The primary aim of this fact finding mission was to obtain feedback from you, Australian dairyfarmers. Everyone has their own thoughts on the ideal cow for their respective operation. Hopefully, this information will be considered and allow for the remodelling of the Australian Profit Ranking (APR) formula. This in turn will hopefully lead to greater acceptance of the APR system in the future. Disproportional proofs are slowly being rectified by the Canadian Dairy Network (CDN). An adjustment is now made when 30% or more of the milking progeny are the result of embryo transplants. In the past we have seen many sires priced primarily for usage in ET programs. In some cases this has resulted in unrealistic values placed on progeny. Often then these bulls when used in the Australian cow population have proved disappointing once a more random proof is obtained. Genomic sires now dominate the ET landscape so the timing of this adjustment is ideal. Regards, We are delighted to announce that our judge for the 2014 competition is Mr Tim Weller from WWS Australia. Tim is well regarded in our industry and brings a wealth of judging experience to the competition. In the On-Farm Competition in 2013 over 300 cattle were entered from 49 participating breeders. Further information will be available at a later date, but judging will occur in mid November with the presentation luncheon planned for early December. Competition is open to Leading Edge Genetics trading clients only. Plans are now underway for our 3rd Elite Sale in March 2015. We are already beginning to assemble some pedigrees for our much anticipated Sale. Our 2013 result of $5514 was a tremendous result in what was a particularly hard time for farmers. Watch our Facebook page as we will profile some of the star lots going forward. Earlier this year a series of farmer meetings were held around the country by Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS).The primary aim of this fact finding mission was to obtain feedback from you, Australian dairyfarmers. Everyone has their own thoughts on the ideal cow for their respective operation. Hopefully, this information will be considered and allow for the remodelling of the Australian Profit Ranking (APR) formula. AUGUST 2014 JERSEY ABVSA changing of the guard has occurred in the Jersey landscape in 2014. A welcome addition is the next generation with sons of Navara and Valerian graduating. The new number 1 sire back in the April proof run in Navarian (GAC) has taken a significant lift of 42 APR points in this August run. Sired by Valerian from an original Navara daughter he now sits at a remarkable 330 on APR. He has an overall type score of 107 type and 109 mammary system. Name APR Type Mam Source

Other interesting newcomers to the top of the listings include CSC Ambition (CSC/ABS) the Navara son who places 5th. Probably one of the more balanced Jersey bulls in the breed is Raceway (GAC) who also graduated in April. He is 249 on APR, 110 type and 113 on mammary together with outstanding workabilitys.

A new addition to the Genetics Australia stable this season is Christmas. Sired also by Roumare he lifted 31 APR points to 256 APR. The profiles of the Christmas daughters are more like his maternal grand sire in Gold Bullion. They are smaller in stature and have plenty of width to their chest and depth to their rib.

A good outcross option this season is the Boliver son Chase from ABS. He was co-sampled in both Australia and USA. A cell count specialist with super frames Chase is 110 type and 109 on udders. AltaIota debuted in the August proof release with a high reliability proof. One of the most balanced bulls on the market he ticks most boxes. He excels in the important fertility traits; he is 152 on cell count and is also a calving ease option. Semen will be scarce this spring so early ordering is essential.

AUGUST 2014 HOLSTEIN ABVSThe rise of Australias number 1 production sire Canbee (Alta) has continued once again. He is now at an astonishing 370 APR which is 61 APR points ahead of his nearest rival. This Roumare son from an Informer dam has a unique production profile. He is 1550 litres with .21% protein and -.08% fat or astonishing total 114 kg CFP.

The opportunities are ahead of us this season.

With milk prices above the average and inputs prices steadily coming down, its a season to pay down debt and capitalise, before a tighter season arrives. The milk to grain/pellet price ratio is looking good ranging from 1.2 to 1.3. With feed costs on some farms representing 30-50% of the total cost of producing milk, its worth reviewing your supplements consistently combined with managing pasture well, with pasture being your main profit driver will help optimise your margins. Still wondering what Vitamin F is, read on.

During early lactation, cows will achieve peak production at about 8-10 weeks after calving. During this phase the cows requirements of energy, protein and minerals, exceed the actual quantity that can physically be consumed.

In the early lactation phase, the cow may lose up to 0.7 kg/day, and its normal for the cow to mobilise body fat to cover the deficit between energy requirements and energy supplied at this time. This is the primary reason why you need to set up the cows in good condition prior to dry off for the next lactation. With the cow mobilising a large amount of body fats, the amount of body protein that can be mobilised is very limited. A dietary protein content of 17-19 per cent crude protein (CP) is ideal for this stage.

Once dry matter intake (DMI) peaks (around 12-14 weeks) the cow is starting its mid lactation phase, when energy supplied to the cow should exceed her requirements. This puts the cow in a positive energy balance which is ideal for joining. If the cow is losing the smallest amount of weight she will not cycle well or as strong, creating a lower conception rate.

The total Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) doesnt want to be less than 30% in the diet, or may cause acidosis, compromising production and herd health.

    KEY POINTS

At joining monitor you milk protein test, it is a measure of energy density in the diet. If you have a Fresian/Holstein herd and milk protein is under 3.2% or a Jersey herd under 3.3% then they may be lacking energy. Therefore potential to have a lower conception rate.

Monitor post grazing residuals very closely while joining, Keep them physically full

Always cut quality silage not quantity, will be a good season for silage do it in small lots to chase the quality.

With whatever farm system you run, it is easy to get caught up in all the hype of new cow supplements. However if you keep it simple by having a balanced diet with the correct level of VITAMIN F = FEED, your herd will be more efficient, and have less health issues and obtain higher conception rates.

Fundamentals of joining cows and maximising peak production with Vitamin FSemex have grabbed the number 1 position in America with their Man-

O-Man son in Facebook. This high profile genomic sire is a production specialist with 172 pounds combined Fat and Protein. He has adequate strength for a MOM son likely due to the strength of his cow family. With limited daughters evaluated he needs to be protected through his rump angle but does exhibit outstanding udders with the added bonus of being a calving ease sire

The dominance of Planet sons continues in America. A number of his stronger sons continue to get market traction. In particular the outstanding udder sire Spur (WWS)and the dual sampled AltaCeleb who both will be popular this season. Another bull that continues to add some daughters and lift is the number 24 ranked sire Hartline Jareb (Agri-Gene). His healthy working traits for a Planet, different maternal pedigree coupled with outstanding udders make him a bull worthy of consideration.

While there was no new additions to the Top 10 rankings there was some movement within. Alta Genetics holds down the top two positions with the Baxter son AltaRazor and the ever improving AltaIota who added a large number of daughters. Lirr Drew Dempsey holds the mantle as the number 1 type sire in Canada and number 6 LPI sire. This Goldwyn son is +20 for confirmation based on 2182 daughters classified. His added substance for a Goldwyn son has made him a popular choice with Leading Edge Genetics clients in 2014.

Another 2nd crop success story is Regancrest Reginald from Semex. This Goldwyn son is receiving super feedback on milking daughters here in Australia. He is high component sire with outstanding udders (+15) and great working traits for a Goldwyn.

An interesting new addition is the Alexander son from Semex in Larcrest Contrast. Tracing back to the C family Contrast exhibits plenty of strength for an Alexander son. He is moderate for production combined with super udders and has a highly reliable debut proof.

    NEWSLETTERAUGUST 2014

    Changes afoot?

    in shortBrad

Earlier this year a series of farmer meetings were held around the country by Australian Dairy Herd Improvement Scheme (ADHIS).The primary aim of this fact finding mission was to obtain feedback from you, Australian dairyfarmers. Everyone has their own thoughts on the ideal cow for their respective operation. Hopefully, this information will be considered and allow for the remodelling of the Australian Profit Ranking (APR) formula.

    Regards,

We are delighted to announce that our judge for the 2014 competition is Mr Tim Weller from WWS Australia. Tim is well regarded in our industry and brings a wealth of judging experience to the competition. In the On-Farm Competition in 2013 over 300 cattle were entered from 49 participating breeders. Further information will be available at a later date, but judging will occur in mid November with the presentation luncheon planned for early December.Competition is open to Leading Edge Genetics trading clients only.

On the night there will be a draw for one lucky couple for tickets to the World Cup Cricket final at the MCG for those who have purchased a 2015 IDW semen pack.

    Navarian daughter

On the night there will be a draw for one lucky couple for tickets to the World Cup Cricket final at the MCG for those who have purchased a 2015 IDW semen pack.

    Navarian 330 107 109 GAC

    BosGregstar 304 85 87 CRV

Other interesting newcomers to the top of the listings include CSC Ambition (CSC/ABS) the Navara son who places 5th. Probably one of the more balanced Jersey bulls in the breed is Raceway (GAC) who also graduated in April. He is 249 on APR, 110 type and 113 on mammary together with outstanding workabilitys.

    Navarian daughter
