Apart from logistic issues when you have tickets with a national air carrier that goes bankrupt it is always interesting and an intensive learning process to follow procedures in other faculties. The production animal, clinical curriculum in Ljubljana partly reflects the Slovenian agricultural structure with thousands of small cattle farms and on top of that the herd size in swine production is smaller than 5 in many places. So they still do a lot of clinical work in cattle (e.g. mastitis, insemination) and pigs (e.g. hernia surgery). And the small animal clinic is also successful and at the limits of its capacity. But one of the other interesting things is the way that a veterinary school describes itself in the Self Evaluation Report. And the numerous considerations behind the description of all the quality procedures, calculation of animals for teaching purposes, calculation of Full Time Equivalents in the staff, biosecurity in anatomy (formaldehyde) and microbiology – do the students work with live bacteria? If yes is it clinical material with potential zoonotic hazards or is it non-pathogenic laboratory strains? Are there smaller group rooms for students? News from School directorDear All,As a practical training for the EAEVE visitation in March-April 2020 I did a so called consultativevisitation to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Apart from logistic issueswhen you have tickets with a national air carrier that goes bankrupt it is always interesting andan intensive learning process to follow procedures in other faculties. The production animal, clinical curriculum in Ljubljana partly reflects the Slovenian agriculturalstructure with thousands of small cattle farms and on top of that the herd size in swineproduction is smaller than 5 in many places. So they still do a lot of clinical work in cattle (e.g.mastitis, insemination) and pigs (e.g. hernia surgery). And the small animal clinic is alsosuccessful and at the limits of its capacity.

But one of the other interesting things is the way that a veterinary school describes itself in theSelf Evaluation Report. And the numerous considerations behind the description of all thequality procedures, calculation of animals for teaching purposes, calculation of Full TimeEquivalents in the staff, biosecurity in anatomy (formaldehyde) and microbiology – do thestudents work with live bacteria? needed? Do students participate in research projects? How do you define hands-on training. Isit the curriculum overloaded with subjects and hours? Exactly the same issues that we areworking with in the current production of our own Self Evaluation Report.

Is it a huge mental difference between being on one or the other side of the table when wetalk about international accreditation? Yes definitely – it is interesting, challenging andwidening your perspective to be on the evaluators' side and less relaxed but more complicated, time consuming and an eye opener to go into all the details necessary to produce a good SelfEvaluation Report.

We look forward to meeting the EAEVE team here at the Vet. School in March-April 2020.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Important news from the SecretariatDue to illness, leave of absence and Chrisstine's resignation, the secretariat will be underincreased pressure over the next few months. This means extra tasks for several of thesecretariat's staff, and longer processing times are to be expected. We ask for your understandingof the situation. Culture NightI would like to thank everyone who contributed to Culture Night at Vetschool. It was an experience to hear the various lectures and to feel the energy spent on telling thevisitors about our research. Despite the pouring rain, we countred approx. 900 guests. Theywalked in the darkness of the gardens, they gathered round the dissection tables and in theAnatomy Hall, and they enjoyed the warmth, the cakes and the coffee in the Café.  Lots ofquestions were asked, and brilliant work was done by students, scientific staff and the techniciansto tell why the veterinary school is a special place. There is no doubt that Culture Night is an important event for the entire faculty, and which ourDean prioritizes.   Christmas Party at SUND The Management Team has agreed that this year the sections decide when they will be havingtheir Christmas Party. However, the Christmas party at SUND will take place on 13. Decemberstarting at 18.30. An option could be to have your own lunch on 13, and then join the party atPanum in the evening.  There is a very nice program, which can be seen here.
