CHILDREN’S ‘GINGERBREAD HOUSE DECORATING PARTY’ IN THE GARDENS

In the spirit of the traditional Christmas that predates our modern celebration, the history of gingerbread houses became very popular in Germany. The Brothers Grimm wrote the story of Hansel and Gretel, making gingerbread houses a very special treat, and quite popular. This tradition became common in early America, and, gratefully, our ancestors continued the art. as do we today.  On December 7th, a typical December afternoon, more than a dozen young children in The Gardens met to decorate Ginger Bread Houses at the home of Dr. Richard and Nancy Philbert.  Once they stepped inside their beautiful home, the children were greeted with the joy of seeing almost 2 dozen miniature Gingerbread houses, which Nancy had earlier baked, sitting on tables covered with white tablecloths; each with the four sides of the little houses, roofs, doors, and windows having been “glued” together with snow-white icing, ready to be embellished and completed by the children with their individual tubes of icing and little bowls of different color, sizes, and shapes of gumdrops, chocolate kisses, M&Ms, candy canes, Santa Clauses, etc.  What fun it was watching them create their own unique and beautiful little Gingerbread houses, wrapping them, and taking them home to share with their family.  (Did I mention that some mothers and adults made Gingerbread Houses too, and enjoyed the experience just as much as the children did?)  This was a ‘first’ for The Gardens, but not for Nancy.  She began learning her baking skills while working with her father in his bakery a long time ago; and since has developed her own superb culinary skills into a real art that she is happy to continually share with her friends and neighbors.  And what’s more beautiful is that she finds great delight in sharing these creative talents and skills with our latest generation of youngsters here in the Gardens too.  And as a Grandmother today, Nancy feels that spending time with children is ‘never’ wasted time.  What a delightful afternoon shared with a delightful group of precious children.  Thank you, Nancy.

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORSRemember to utilize your HOA as well as resources provided by

your HOA, such as the directory, to connect with your neighbors. You can take advantage of community areas such as the Lakes and Country Club along with its amenities to get to know others that live in The Dominion. One advantage to building relationships with neighbors is that it increases a sense of community and encourages a safe atmosphere. By getting to know your neighbors you will be better able to work together to maintain and preserve the values of your homes and common areas, keeping the Dominion as a premier community. Establishing relationships with your neighbors takes time and effort, but it is worth the effort.

WALKERS AND JOGGERSAs a safety precaution, please remember to walk/jog opposing

traffic while exercising along Dominion streets. Here are a few tips and reminders to keep you running safe: • When possible, know your route ahead of time to be aware of

road damage, debris, narrow lanes and potentially dangerous intersections.

• When running, be aware of your surroundings. While you are looking ahead, keep your peripheral vision in tune to look for objects that may pass in front or around you.

• Run as far to the side of the road as possible.   • Before you pass a cross road, look behind you for traffic. • Run in a straight line and be predictable.• Do not make darting moves into traffic.• If a motorist is slowing or stopped at an intersection, make

eye contact with that person to be sure they see you. Watch for any forward motion of their vehicle, even though they might be stopped.

• If a situation looks unpredictable, have a backup plan ready. This might be slowing down, stopping or running off-road.

The extra few seconds you spend taking safety precautions may save your life, please be safe out there.

HOLIDAY FIREWORKSAs we approach the New Year it is important to remember fire

safety.  There have been recent incidents where fireworks and model rockets have been fired on property.  These rockets do not always fly straight up and some have come close to hitting other residents.  Fireworks, model rockets, or anything that could put projectiles or flammable material on our property is a fire hazard and is not authorized within the Dominion.  These devices can be fun, but must be enjoyed in an appropriate park or area where their use is authorized.  Help keep our community safe.

entry. QuickPass has a mobile app for android phones, iPhones, and iPads.  This is a quick and easy way to update you access list on-the-go. If you have any questions about using QuickPass please feel free to contact the HOA or the Chief of Security and we will be happy to assist.

1. All guests to the Dominion must be announced though QuickPass or approved via phone call.  Residents cannot call security and ask that everyone requesting to come to their homes be allowed entry.

2. Enter first name first and last name last for guests. Don’t use titles (Dr., Fr, Hr., Mr., Mrs., etc.) or nicknames: try to make sure the name is how security will see it on their ID.

3. Enter only one name per entry. Don’t use multiple names per line such as John and Mary Smith.  Enter John Smith as one entry, and Mary Smith as another. Enter company names.  For example, use “AAA Auger” instead of “plumber” 4. We check the driver’s license of the drivers (and ID’s for passengers of vendors).  For example, you may have a housekeeper on your list, but their spouse drives them to work.  If this is the case please add the appropriate name. 5. If you add a temporary guest you are granting them in and out access throughout the day until midnight.  Their names will no longer be on the list at 12:01 AM.  If you are expecting

them before 7:00 AM be sure to specify the entry time since the default admit time is 7:00 AM.  Security will not see their names before 7 otherwise. 6. If you are only expecting a guest to enter and not return after their visit/business is concluded then enter them as a one time entry.  Their names will drop off the list after they are admitted.

7. For guests not on your list security will attempt to contact you one time for clearance.  After that your guest will be instructed to turn around and re-enter after they contact you and ask you to call security to grant them access.  It is important the primary phone number you wish security to call be labeled as “Phone 1” in your contact information. The system automatically categorizes a guest as a temporary (all day) entry if security calls you to clear a guest and you grant permission to enter. You must remove their name from your list if you want to admit them only once, otherwise they may come back because they will still be on your list. 8. Using the event tab is the easiest way to add many names to your list from special events to parties, business meetings to bible study.  Ensure your event start time is early enough in the system to accommodate caterers, etc. if it applies.  Otherwise, security will not see the names and will call you to grant them access.

9. The note tab is used to alert officers at the gates about special considerations while processing traffic.  For instance, “Deny John
